In order to be compliant with local code, please be sure to check local requirements.
ANSI Letter
All ANSI Letters should be in the below format in order to be in compliant with Starwood policy. The
certification must contain Starwoods standard language, and a sample of the document can be located on
StarQA (SW1/E-Tools/StarQA), linked directly from the Standard. The letter must be current and is valid for 3
years only.
Emergency Shut-Off
The button should be clearly marked with appropriate signage and be visible from the whirlpool. Guests
must also have unobstructed access to it. It is preferable for the button to be red in colour, but is not
required.
No Diving Signage
The No Diving markings on the pool deck are not required to be immediately adjacent to the depth
markers but the maximum distance between the No Diving markers is 25 ft./ 7.62 m.
Pool Lighting
The Standard does not require that the interior of the pool must be lit, but rather the lighting around the
pool must be bright enough to be able to see the bottom of the pool.
Physically Secured means that the pool area is not accessible with a guestroom key card during times
the pool is closed.
Life Preserver
The standard states that the rope should be 2/3 the maximum width of the swimming pool, however certain
properties have pools which are more than 100 feet wide. Having this amount of rope may be too heavy and not
feasible, therefore it is recommended that multiple life preservers be placed around the pool instead, each rope
measuring 30 feet in length. Please also be sure that all ropes remain untangled. Ensuring the ropes are
attached and untangled should be part of a daily maintenance check.
Shepherds Hook
It is suggested that Shepherds Hooks be hung horizontally for easy access.
Pool Signage
This signage may be part of the Pool Rules sign. If the Pool Rules sign does not have this notice, an additional
sign must be posted.
Whirlpools
For slip resistant surfaces, auditors should take into consideration solutions that may have been applied to
tile/stone, as well as pre-treated stone, designed to increase the co-efficient of friction. After market, liquid
applied solutions are acceptable and must be maintained according to the manufacturers instructions. Re-
applications may be necessary.
Although there is no minimum size requirement for whirlpool depth markings, they must be clearly visible and be
located on either the deck or posted signage is acceptable. Waterline depth markers are not acceptable. If your
hotel only has waterline depth markers, they do not have to be removed, but an additional 2 depth markers
should be added to comply with the standard. Communal whirlpools are general located in an area that is
accessible to hotel guests. This includes whirlpools found in spas. In-Room whirlpools do not apply.
Door Viewer
Door viewer must be unobstructed and have a clear line of sight through it.
Allergen Program
Provided the essence of the text is there in the right places, hotels should not be penalized if there are some
minor variations to the text.
The training module that is currently being used for this is called Allergen Awareness Training for Food Handlers
and Ordertakers.
Window Openings
Safety devices, window restrictors can be installed to comply with this standard. If applicable, window openings
will be measured in all inspected 5 rooms. Examples of restrictors are below:
For slip resistant surfaces, auditors should take into consideration solutions that may have been applied to
tile/stone, as well as pre-treated stone, designed to increase the co-efficient of friction. After market, liquid
applied solutions are acceptable and must be maintained according to the manufacturers instructions. Re-
applications may be necessary. Proof of purchase / application may be requested.
Distraction Patterns
All tinted windows require a distraction pattern unless the windows are extremely tinted and obvious in all
weather. Distraction patterns are applicable to all full length glass panels on ALL floors, including glass panels
that may have furniture up against it, since furniture can easily be moved. If a glass panel, with a ledge, does not
have a distraction decal, the ledge will be measured.

all associates with the newest version (however, it is preferred). Going forward, all associates must be using the
most recent form. If a certification is translated into the local language, the translation must be on the same
document as the English version to confirm wording.
