Technology Standards

Nicole Lightell
Hathy

The technology foundation standards for students are divided into six broad categories.

Standards within each category are to be introduced, reinforced, and mastered by students. These
categories provide a framework for linking performance indicators within the Profiles for

Technology Literate Students to the standards. Teachers can use these standards and profiles as

guidelines for planning technology-based activities in which students achieve success in

learning, communication, and life skills ("Advancing digital age,).

Creativity and innovation is when students will demonstrate creative thinking, construct

knowledge and develop innovative products and processes using technology ("Advancing digital age,).

In short, the students will have the opportunity to generate new ideas by brainstorming with other

classmates as well as on their own. They will be able to create original works as a means of

personal or group expression ("Advancing digital age,). They will also use games and simulations to

figure out difficult task. For example, when introducing a student to new software on the

computer allow them to explore the program with other students or alone before explaining how

the software really works.

Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively,

including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others
("Advancing digital age,)
. For example, allowing students to do a project with their peers while using

different types of technology. Also letting them work with culturally diverse students and having

them learn of other cultures. When working on a project with other students allow them to use

their imagination to come up with a unique assignment.

Having students use technology to search for information is another standard for CCSD.

Map out diverse ways to find information ("Advancing digital age,). Locate where you want your

students to gather information from ("Advancing digital age,). If they pull their research from the

internet you as the teacher would need to make sure the sites are appropriate. Have them

organize their research, such as in an outline or a bubble map. Have the students analyze the
information before you, the teacher, have a chance to look at it. Then have the students evaluate

other students papers as a group ("Advancing digital age,). Once the student has finished his or her

assignment give positive feedback on how the student could improve his or her work, or praise

them on how well they did.

When a student needs to problem solve or make a decision it is imperative the teacher

identify and define authentic problems and finding the important questions to ask ("Advancing digital
age,)
. If the student is having a problem that they cannot seem to fix the educator can put a plan in

place to make sure the student is successful. Such as giving the student a deadline for each

project that is being given, ranging from a weekly or monthly time frame. Also explore other

options and diverse perspectives alternative solutions ("Advancing digital age,). For example, if the

student is falling behind in a project due to lack of understanding, the teacher can provide

another time to meet with that student one on one. The student will be able to understand the

concept and not have to be singled out and can turn in his or her project on time like the rest of

the class.

When students are using different types of technology in the classroom it is important

that they use proper netiquette. Before using any kind of technology the educator must inform

his or her students the rules before using the software. Let them know digital citizenship is to

exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology and learning ("Advancing digital age,). Have them

demonstrate personal responsibility. For example have them create a webpage for the class, and

as you walk your class through the steps educate them on the different aspects of having a

webpage on the internet. Introduce them to the legal side in addition to having them still being

creative.
Lastly students need to understand technology concepts and systems ("Advancing digital age,). A

computer can be a very frightening concept to someone who has barely touched one. ELL

students might have a hard time understanding a simple idea such as opening a browser. Pairing

students with each other to discover how the machine works is a great way to get students to

work together and also help the ones who are having a difficult time. Using current knowledge to

learn new technologies can be very useful in the classroom ("Advancing digital age,). For instance, when

teaching a concept that has multiple assignments, have them do a similar assignment to the one

before only with a couple more steps. This way the student already has the knowledge to do the

basics and can now elaborate by not only showing what they have learned but also contributing

new knowledge.

In conclusion, the Clark County School District has standards for evaluating the skills

and knowledge students need to learn effectively and exist productively. Simply being able to

use technology is no longer enough. Todays students need to be able to use technology and

analyze, learn and explore. Digital age skills are vital for preparing students to work, live and

contribute to the social and civic fabric or their communities ("Advancing digital age,).
