world-wide. Students will review and strengthen the grammar learned in Spanish III and will continue
to increase their proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing the Spanish language. These

Grading:
The department grades a student based on his/her performanceWHAT THE STUDENT CAN DO,
rather than what the student does not knowusing a total-points system. Students earn points for
tasks and skills performed in the areas of reading comprehension, written expression,
speaking/listening proficiency, grammar/structures, and vocabulary use. Rubrics are used for skills
assessment and they describe the various components of a students performance and how they are
graded for each skill. The department uses the Mastery Grading Scale, which is a progressive scale to
measure a students understanding.
Assignment categories
Grades will be divided into 3 categories: PRACTICE, PROCESS, and PRODUCT grades. Practice grades
usually include homework or classwork assignments and are only worth 1 or 2 points. Practice
assignments are graded for completion. Process grades are usually between 10-20 points and are
graded assignments or quizzes that assess mastery of individual concepts that will later appear on
Tests. Product grades usually include Tests or Projects, and are usually divided into grades for each
standard that is tested. Process and Product grades are graded for accuracy.
Tests:
For each unit studied, there will be a test that assesses Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing skills
in Spanish AND culture of the countries studied that unit. Tests cannot be retaken.
Quizzes:
There will be regular quizzes that will cover vocabulary and specific grammar concepts. Quizzes
generally range from 10-25 points and are graded using the Mastery Grading scale. Some quizzes will
be taken in class, while others will be administered via www.Quia.com. Quizzes on Quia will have a
deadline for students to complete. Quia quiz scores will be recorded when the quiz closes. Students
may retake any Quia OR in-class quiz, but it must be within a week of when the quiz was given. (After
the re-take period closes, the student will receive whatever grade was earned on the original quiz,
even if that was a zero.)
Electronic devices:
Electronic devices such as iPods or other music players, tablets, phones, and laptops must be in the
silent or off position and out of sight during class time unless otherwise specified. The first time I see
a device that I havent given permission to use is a warning; the second I take it until the end of class;
the third time I turn it in to the administration. Students should remember that non-compliance with
a teachers request results in disciplinary action.
There will be times during class when we use personal and school electronic devices for class
activities. During approved activities, students are allowed to use electronic devices only for the
purposes of completing the activity. Students who are off-task will lose the privilege of using
electronics.
Cheating:
I expect you to do your own work. Because the nature of many class activities is group work,
honest participation is keyeach member of the group should contribute rather than writing down
others answers. Students who cheat (copying work, lying, sharing their work, using others ideas as
their own, using the internet for translation, etc.) will be disciplined using WCPSS Board Policy.
Tutors:
Students who have private tutors MUST inform me so that I am aware. Tutors can help students
complete work; tutors are not to correct student work without indicating the corrections. Otherwise,
it is cheating and the student will be disciplined in accordance with WCPSS Board Policy.
Extra Credit:
There are NO extra credit assignments during the year because students have the opportunity to
retake quizzes and the grading rubrics generously benefit the students based on effort.
The Attendance Policy, Tardy Policy, Dress Code, and Honor Code will be implemented as outlined
by the WCPSS Board and the Student Handbook.
Please review this syllabus in its entirety and sign and return the parent letter given out in class to
