Valdevieso, Rose To The Young Women of Malolos

I. Background

To the Women of Malolos was written in London, in response to the request of Marcelo

H. del Pilar. Rizal addresses all kinds of women mothers, wives, the unmarried, etc. and

expresses everything that he wishes them to keep in mind. He emphasized reason and supported

the education of women so that they may be enlightened: religiousness required reason; without

reason there was only religiosity. Rizals letter argued that womens value was contingent on

their contribution to the Filipino identity, stressing how the character of motherhood reflected the

character of the motherland.

II. Highlights

The rejection of the spiritual authority of the friars not all of the priests at that time had

pure religious intentions because most of them were corrupted by worldly desires.

Qualities Filipino mothers need to possess and the duties and responsibilities of the

Filipino mothers to their children.

Duties and responsibilities of a wife to her husband.

To aid young women to discern in the qualities of their partner.

III. Relevance

Rizal depicted various noble qualities on how a woman should act at home and in the

eyes of society. However, as time progresses, Filipino women gradually lose such traits. There

are often times where mothers forget their roles in rearing their children because of the

overriding idea of having to earn for the family to supplement their family. Although there is

nothing negative about working hard for the welfare of the family, there must always be balance
in the way people go through life. Failure in the home cannot be compensated by any amount of

wealth or fame.
