Let us pray (pause)
O God, who were pleased to give us
the shining example of the Holy Family,
graciously grant that we may imitate them
in practicing the virtues of family life and in the bonds of charity,
and so, in the joy of your house,
delight one day in eternal rewards.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
R. Amen.
1
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God.
2
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God,
through Christ our Lord.
For through him the holy exchange that restores our life
has shone forth today in splendor:
when our frailty is assumed by your Word
not only does human mortality receive unending honor
but by this wondrous union we, too, are made eternal.
When the Roman Canon is used, the proper form of the Communicantes (In communion with those) is
said.
READINGS
Year A
FIRST READING (Those who fear the Lord honor their parents.)
A reading from the Book of Sirach (3:2-6, 12-14)
God sets a father in honor over his children; a mothers authority he confirms
over her sons. Whoever honors his father atones for sins, and preserves himself from
them. When he prays, he is heard; he stores up riches who reveres his mother.
3
Whoever honors his father is gladdened by children, and, when he prays, is heard.
Whoever reveres his father will live a long life; he who obeys his father brings
comfort to his mother.
My son, take care of your father when he is old; grieve him not as long as he
lives. Even if his mind fail, be considerate of him; revile him not all the days of his
life; kindness to a father will not be forgotten, firmly planted against the debt of your
sinsa house raised in justice to you. The Word of the Lord.
R. Thanks be to God.

SECOND READING (Family life in the Lord.)
A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Colossians (3:12-21)
Brothers and sisters: Put on, as Gods chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt
compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another
and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance against another; as the Lord has
forgiven you, so must you also do. And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of
perfection. And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you
were also called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you
richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns,
and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in
word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God
the Father through him.
Wives, be subordinate to your husbands, as is proper in the Lord. Husbands, love
your wives, and avoid any bitterness toward them. Children, youre your parents in
everything, for this is pleasing to the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke your children, so
they may not become discouraged. The Word of the Lord.
R. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL (Take the child and his mother, and flee into Egypt.)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew (2:13-15, 19-23)
When the magi had departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in
a dream and said, Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there
until I tell you. Herod is going to search for the child to destroy him. Joseph rose and
took the child and his mother by night and departed for Egypt. He stayed there until
the death of Herod, that what the Lord had said through the prophet might be fulfilled,
Out of Egypt I called my son.
When Herod had died, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to
Joseph in Egypt and said, Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of
Israel, for those who sought the childs life are dead. He rose, took the child and his
mother, and went to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling
over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go back there. And because
he had been warned in a dream, he departed for the region of Galilee. He went and
dwelt in a town called Nazareth, so that what had been spoken through the prophets
might be fulfilled, He shall be called a Nazorean. The Gospel of the Lord.
R. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

promise was trustworthy. So it was that there came forth from one man, himself as
good as dead, descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the
sands on the seashore.
By faith Abraham, when put to the test, offered up Isaac, and he who had
received the promises was ready to offer his only son, of whom it was said, Through
Isaac descendants shall bear your name. He reasoned that God was able to raise even
from the dead, and he received Isaac back as a symbol. The Word of the Lord.

GOSPEL (The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom.)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke (2:22-40)
When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of
Moses, Joseph and Mary took Jesus up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, just as
it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that opens the womb shall be
consecrated to the Lord, and to offer the sacrifice of a pair of turtledoves or two
young pigeons, in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord.
Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was
righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon
him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before
he had seen the Christ of the Lord. He came in the Spirit into the temple; and when
the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regard to
him, he took him into his arms and blessed God, saying: Now, Master, you may let
your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your
salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, a light for revelation to the
Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel. The childs father and mother were
amazed at what was said about him; and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his
mother, Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be
a sign that will be contradictedand you yourself a sword will pierceso that the
thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. There was also a prophetess, Anna, the
daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived
seven years with her husband after her marriage, and then as a widow until she was
eighty-four. She never left the temple, but worshiped night and day with fasting and
7
prayer. And coming forward at that very time, she gave thanks to God and spoke
about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem.
When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law of the Lord, they returned
to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled
with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him. The Gospel of the Lord.
R. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts! My soul yearns and pines for the

Happy they who dwell in your house! Continually they praise you. Happy the men

GOSPEL (His parents found Jesus sitting in the midst of the teachers.)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke (2:41-52)
Each year Jesus parents went to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover, and when
he was twelve years old, they went up according to festival custom. After they had
completed its days, as they were returning, the boy Jesus remained behind in
Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. Thinking that he was in the caravan, they
journeyed for a day and looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances, but
not finding him, they returned to Jerusalem to look for him. After three days they
found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and
asking them questions, and all who heard him were astounded at his understanding
and his answers. When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said
9
to him, Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for
you with great anxiety. And he said to them, Why were you looking for me? Did
you not know that I must be in my Fathers house? But they did not understand what
he said to them. He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to
them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart. And Jesus advanced in wisdom
and age and favor before God and man. The Gospel of the Lord.
