Note on Folium of Descartes

August 6, 2017

Definition 1.1. The folium of Descartes is an algebraic curve defined by the equation x3 +y 3 3axy = 0.
Here we only focus on a > 0. The case a < 0 is similar.

N Definition 1.1 N Property 1.2

Property 1.1.
(1) The folium of Descartes forms a loop in the first quadrant with a double point at the origin.
(2) The folium of Descartes is symmetric about the line y = x.
3a sin cos
Property 1.2. The folium of Descartes in polar coordinates is r = .
sin3 + cos3
3at 3at2
Property 1.3. The folium of Descartes has a parametric equations x(t) = , y(t) = .
1 + t3 a + t3
t < 1 corresponds to x > 0 and y < 0, the right, lower, wing;
1 < t < 0 corresponds to x < 0 and y > 0, the left, upper wing;
t > 0 corresponds to x > 0 and y > 0, the loop of the curve.

Property 1.4. The folium of Descartes forms an asymptote x + y + a = 0. s

Proof. Note that x approaches infinity or negative infinity if and only if t approaches 1. Then the slope
of the asymptote is given by
y
m = lim = lim t = 1.
x x t1

The y-intercept is given by

3at 3at2 3at

k = lim y mx = lim 3
+ 3
= lim 2 = a
x t1 1 + t 1+t t1 t t + 1

Then we have the asymptote y = mx + k = x a.
