Tutorial 3 (Chapter 4: Equilibrium of Rigid Bodies)

Question 1

For the given loading of the beam AB,

determine the range of values of the mass
of the crate for which the system will be
in equilibrium, knowing that the
maximum allowable value of the
reactions at each support is 2.5kN and
that the reaction at E must be directed
downward.

Question 2
A rod AB, hinged at A and attached at
B to cable BD, supports the loads
shown. Knowing that d = 200mm,
determine
(a) the tension in cable BD,
(b) the reaction at A

Question 3

A 200mm lever and a 240mm diameter

pulley are welded to the axle BE that is
supported by bearings at C and D. If a
720N vertical load is applied at A
when the level is horizontal, determine
(a) the tension in the cord
(b) the reactions at C and D.
Assume that the bearing at D does not
exert any axial thrust.

Question 4
Try Question 3, by assuming that the axle has been rotated clockwise in its bearings by 30
degree and that the 720N load remain vertical, determine (a) the tension in the cord and the
reactions at C and D. Assume that the bearing at D does not exert any axial thrust

Question 5

The rectangular plate shown

weighs 400N and is supported by
three vertical wires. Determine
the tension in each wire.

Question 6

A 10m boom is acted upon by the

4kN force shown. Determine the
tension in each cable and the
reaction at the ball and socket joint
at A.
