Subject : Mathematics
Education Unit : Senior High School
Class/Semester : XI/Odd
Subject Material : Polynomial
Time Allocation : 1 x 25 minutes

I. COMPETITION STANDARD
Understanding the basic concept about using polynomial rules in problem
solving.

II. BASIC COMPETITION

Dividing a polynomial by ax + b on remainder theorem.

III. INDICATOR
Students are able to determine the remainder of the polynomial division by linear
form with the remainder theorem.

IV. LEARNING OBJECTIVE

A. Academic Purposes
Through discussion and assignment methods, Students are able to determine
the remainder of the polynomial division by linear form with the remainder
theorem.
B. Character Nation Purpose
1. Use time the exact and carefully to complete each task (discipline).
2. Give your friend for different opinion (tolerance).
3. Conclude and prove something base on the data actually be obtained
(honestly).
4. Trying hard to complete the task (hard work).
5. Trying to find a principle or formula base on the data obtained from the
task at hand (creative).
6. Asking questions and trying to find another source of material related to
the subject (curiosity).
7. Expression and accept the opinion of friends in groups to work on a given
task (friendly).

V. LEARNING MATERIAL
If f(x) = ax + b, is a divisor of P(x) then the relation between P(x) and f(x) can be
written as follows P(x) = (ax+b), valid with x are real number. So, degree of f(x)
is one and S have zero degree. The rest of the division can be determined by
using the following theorem.
Theorem 1
b
If many parts P(x) of degree n divided by (ax + b) then the remainder is P(
a
).
Proof:
b
It must be shown that S = P( ), if polynomial P(x) with n-degree is divided
a
by (ax + b), form of the division is written as follows
n( x )
P ( x) ( ax b)( ) S ....(1)

b
Next step, substituting the value of x = to (1), we get

So, the remainder P( ). (Proved)

Example:
Determine the remainder of (4 x 3 2 x 2 4 x 6) : ( x 3) using remainder
theorem.
Solution:
The polynomial P(x) = (4 x 3 2 x 2 4 x 6) is divided by ( x 3) and the

3
remainder is S = P ( ) = P(-3).
1
So, by substituting x = -3 to P(x), we get
P(-3) = 4.( 3) 3 2.( 3) 2 4.(3) 6 72 .
So, the remainder is -72.

01: Key Answers and Rubric Assessment

Description of the expected answer Score

a) Its known that : 20

P(x) = 4 x 4 3x 2 6 x 2
f(x) = 2x + 1
Asked : determine the remainder by using theorem
Solution:
The polynomial P(x) = - 4 x 4 3x 2 6 x 2 is divided by
1
( 2 x 1) and the remainder is S = P ( ).
2
1 30
So, by substituting x = to P(x), we get
2
1 1 1 1
P( ) = 4.( ) 4 3.( ) 2 6.( ) 2 6 .
2 2 2 2
So, the remainder is 6.
b) Its known that :
P(x) = - 4 x 3 10 x 2 14 x 5
f(x) = 2x + 5
Asked : determine the remainder by using theorem 20

Solution:
The polynomial P(x) = - 4 x 3 10 x 2 14 x 5 is divided

5
by (2 x 5) and the remainder is S = P ( ).
2
5
So, by substituting x= to P(x), we get 30
2
5 5 3 5 2 5
P( ) = 4.( ) 10.( ) 14.( ) 5 30 .
2 2 2 2
So, the remainder is 30.
