Length: Two Minutes
Deadline: February 2017

Tamia Mullaney-Downer (Director)

Brief overview of content:
A menacing thriller based on a young girl named Emily Wilson, who finds herself
being stalked by two dangerous masked figures, who have held her captive for
seven days and possess putrid intentions. Based in the dark abyss of an eerie
forest, Emily Wilson finds herself in drastic circumstances, where she has to
choose between her health and her life. Blood, sweat and tears are shed, as
Emily tries to escape the grasp of the sadistic men who want her life.
Target audience profiling:
We decided to make the minimum age range 15 years of age. This is because,15
year olds are aware of the reality of violence and the concept of kidnap. As well
as this, this is an age where the concepts within our film appeal to them,
because action within a movie is what makes them want to watch films. As well
as this, there is elements of core and use of weaponry in our film, which this age
group finds thrilling to witness. We decided to make the age of 30 our maximum
age range. This is because beyond 30, action becomes less appealing to older
viewers.
Age group: 15-30:
We decided to make this our target audience, because our film contains violence
and scenes viewers of a younger age may find unnerving. Therefore, we felt 15
was an appropriate age for the lower bound, because this is an age where
teenagers are aware of violence and sinister acts and many find it thrilling to
watch but uphold a level of maturity. . We chose the higher bound to be the age
of 30, because we felt this is the age where viewers find thrillers more exciting
than that of other genres. This means more individuals in this age bracket would
take a liking to our production and the discomforting storyline.
Gender: All genders:
We decided our target gender to be all genders. This is because we felt that our
storyline would appeal to every gender, as it exemplifies aspects both the male
and female population find exciting. As well as this, thrillers tend to be watched
by all genders in general, therefore we felt as if the gender category of every
gender was suitable.
Socio economic status: C2-E:
There are scenes of a violent nature therefore this would be inappropriate for a
younger audience and wouldnt appeal to older viewers.
What comparable products have you researched?
Eden Lake: This is a thriller based on a couple, who go for a romantic getaway
to a forest by Eden Lake. However, after an altercation with a gang of sinister
teenagers, they become victims of the lake and are succumb to the gangs
wrath. We wanted to incorporate the idea of a forest, because when watching
this movie, the forest made it seem like the couple had no escape. This adds the
codes and conventions of a thriller, because it keeps the audience immersed into
the experience and on the edge of their seats.
The Purge: This is a film based on an American law, that on one night every
year (purge night) where all crime becomes legal, even death. We incorporated
the characters from Purge one into our film. This is because when watching the
purge, the sheer malicious nature of the masked figures, created an enigmatic
element, due to the fact most if their identities are not discovered. We felt that
this would be effective in our piece, these characters would aid the scare factor
of the narrative. This film is based on a brutal concept whereby on what night
every year all crime is legal, even murder. In the first Purge, a group of masked
figure terrorise a family because they are keeping someone in their home who
the antagonists want to purge on. In the purge, the antagonists are extremely
similar to the antagonists in our opening sequence. This is due to the fact that,
they both consist of sinister masked figures victimising certain people/person.
What is rationale behind this text?
An isolated setting to demonstrate Emily Wilson being the only subject of this
frightening fate. The desolate forest connotes isolation. This suggests that the
forest is a symbolic representation of Emily herself and the element of her being
completely alone. We decided to set our flashbacks in a dark shed, where Emily
was held captive for a long period of time. This is because realistically, the
antagonists would have kept their captive in a secluded place where no one wold
find them, therefore using an abandoned shed aids the realism.
How will you test whether the product is successful? How will you check
that is accomplishes the intended effect?
Questionnaires aimed at our target audience: This will enable us to be able to
relate our piece on the popular aspects of thrillers this age group wants to watch.
What generic codes and conventions will be operating in your text?
Setting: A forest. This is influenced by the setting in Eden Lake which was an
abandoned forest in the middle of nowhere. This adds tension because the
audience know there is no help or safety close by for Emily.
Identify any resource constraints that might affect your production and
your hopes for your products:
Effective time management:
Our goals, which we set for ourselves, have to be realistic in order for the
production of a successful opening scene.
Equipment: Due to the fact we have many props incorporated into our piece we
need to order them earlier on in case the shipment takes a long time.
Money: We want the most realistic props however the higher the quality of the
prop, the more money it will cost. In order to make our thriller as scary as
possible, we need sufficient props e.g. Masks
Human resources: Many people use forests, due to them being a pubic area to
walk dogs, exercise and stroll in. Thus means, when filing, it will be hard to
exemplify an isolated forest, when there are people in all of the shots. This then
contributes to background noise, which decreases the professionalism and
effectiveness of the production itself, as well as makes the filming process
tedious.
