Example 1 of 6: Distance Word Problem

John rode {2 kilometers} on his bike. His sister Sally rode {3000 meters} on her
bike. Who rode the farthest and how much farther did they ride (answer in km)?

Step 1: Underline important information and {bracket} important numbers.

Step 2: Ask: What is this question asking me to do? (Determine who rode the
farthest and by how much).

Step 3: When going from a large unit to a small unit, you multiply.
When going from a small unit to a large unit, you divide.

Step 4: Since the question is asking for the answer in km, convert Sallys
distance to km: 3,000 m = 3 km because there are 1,000 m in 1 km; 2,000 m
in 2 km etc.

Step 5: Solve: Sally rode farther because she rode 3 km and John only rode 2
km. Subtract to find the difference: 3km - 2km = 1 km.

Example 2 of 6: Distance Word Problem

>>>Stacy and Vicky both collect stickers. Vicky has seven times as many stickers
as Stacy. If Vicky has 63 stickers, how many stickers does Stacy have?
Start by clarifying what you understand, and what you are being asked to solve.
The words as many as tell us that we are comparing. Vicky has 7 times as many
as Stacy, so the multiplier is seven. It also tells us that Vickys amount, 63, is the
second set, since she has more than Stacy. The part we are missing is the number in
one set. To solve the problem we have to use the inverse operation of multiplication:
division.
We divide Vickys number of stickers, 63, by the multiplier, 7. Since 63 7 = 9,
Stacy has nine stickers.
This answer is reasonable because the problem tells us that Vicky has more stickers
than Stacy. We know that the second set is a multiple of the first set, so we can

think, how many stickers need to be in each of the seven sets to equal 63? 7 x 9
= 63, so this answer makes sense.

Multiplication as Comparison:
In the equation 7 x 5 = 35, the answer 35 is 5 times as many as 7. It is also 7
times as many as 5.
