Hope & Fear
During english this semester, we as a class have read books where violence and sadness
are portrayed vigorously. The books all have common denominators of hope and fear. Two of the
books, A Long Way Gone and Real Time, focus on young children getting involved in things that
they would not have normally gotten involved with. Examples of these abnormal situations
consist of being both suicide bombers and soldiers at extremely young ages. Hope and fear drive
human behavior in both positive and negative ways.
The book, A Long Way Gone, shows many examples of situations driven by both hope
and fear. An example of hope would be how Ishmael wished and prayed that he would once soon
be out of the war and reconnected with his family. Ishmael also feared of getting lost in his
actions, which consisted of killing and taking drugs. In Ishmaels case, hope outweighed fear in a
positive way. His life was completely turned around by caretakers taking him out of the war zone
and putting him into a safe environment. Although Ishmael was never given the chance to see his
family members ever again.
Real Time was also a very good example of both hope and fear. Sameh had a fear of what
would happen to him and his family if he didnt join the terrorist group. He had little hope of his
family getting by with the very little money him and his siblings made. In his mind, joining and
going through with the bombing would give his mother and siblings everything they had ever
asked for, even if it meant going on with their lives without him. Even though at the last minute

Sameh decided not to detonate the bomb, the other terrorist group members had a backup plan
and the bomb was set off anyway. The outcome of his fear caused many innocent people to be
both injured and killed in the bombing. This was planned, but since Sameh wasnt the detonator,
his family was punished and got nothing to benefit from his actions.
These book are comparable because they both contain teenagers as main characters that
are participating in severely violent crimes. Ishmael and Sameh care deeply for their family
members and are involved in killing people. Even though neither of the boys want to hurt people,
they must sacrifice their wants for their families needs. Both characters are stripped of
innocence and are blinded by reality at such a young age.
They are different because Ishmael gets a happy ending, unlike Sameh. Ishmael gets
closure for the things he was put through and chance to start over with a new family. Sameh still
has his family, but everything else is taken from him and his life went from bad to worse.
Ishmael killed far more people and was changed as a person. Sameh was actually taught that
what he did was considered right and it had to be done. Ishmael was forced to join the army and
serve for his country after his family was taken from him.
A Long Way Gone and Real Time made me realize why some people may do bad things,
such as suicide bombing or killing innocent people during war. Everything you do has a motive
and before these books, I didn't think about others motives before accusing them of what they did
as being wrong. These stories have showed me that having hope doesnt always give you a
positive outcome and make everything work out in your favor, but having fear doesnt mean
youll have a negative one. Hope and fear drive human behavior in both positive and negative
ways.
