Early Childhood Education is generally accepted as the period between 0 and 8 ages.
People obtain most of their characteristic features during this period. Moreover, the good and
bad experiences lived in these ages have shaping and damaging effects in peoples lives.
According to a great extent of psychological theories, early childhood period has an
importance in which our psychological health is founded. If this foundation is not established
properly, life gets harder in adulthood years. Therefore, what we teach children during the
mentioned period and the way how we bring them up is of vital significance both for these
individuls and for the society we live in.
The purpose of early childhood education is firstly to provide children an environment
which is way from any effects that may damage their psychological health. In addition to such
a preventive approach, what we want to contribute children is worth answering to see the
purpose of early childhood education. Early childhood education cannot be given without
parents supports, I mean this duty cannot be given solely to the pre-school teachers.
Therefore, the purpose of early childhood education should cover both parents wishes and the
methods and intentions of pre-school teachers. As parents, generally people want their
children to bring up in the best possible way; especially in Turkey, the families having not so
many children want their children to go to the best schools, to take the best results in their
exams, to marry the best person ever, to work in the best-paid place and the list has no end.
Therefore, the parents wishes are generally towards the eartly life of their children. In such an
atmosphere, some children cannot bear this burden and their psychological situation can be
damaged. Here, professional support by pre-school teachers is a must. And their primary goal
in these childrens education should be to encourage the development of each aspect of
children including physical, cognitive, emotional, spritiual, social and so on..
In the early chilhood period, the things that parents regard worth-knowing and preschool teachers do can differ most times. While parents disregard some points which can be
crucial, the pre-school teachers are supposed to regard all aspects in childrens education. If
children will be sent to pre-school or kindergarten, then parents should be busy with the
things attached to life. The most effective way to teach children is to live according to what
you want them to learn. The words and your warnings are not as effective as your actions,
especially you do not apply those wishes in your life. People live by their principles and want
their children to follow these principles in their lives, which can be religional, national and
moral. In my opinion, as parents, people are not to teach them mathematics or literature as
these subjects can be taught during school ages. If I were a parent, I would try to convey my
moral, religional and national feelings to my children, which can be conveyed through your
actions and beliefs; the more accordingly you live by your principles, the better will learn
your children the basic principles in life thanks to you.
From the early years of childhood, including baby years, children just imitate the
actions of people around them. For example one of the basic skills of children is language
acquisition and they gain this capability by pursuing their parents. Other than such basic
needs, daily habits of children are also shaped by the actions of their parents. If a mother eats
her lunch with chopsticks, the child will try to use them. Therefore, young children learn the
actions of parents by imitation. As for the pre-school years, in the kindergarten, children again
learn by imitating their peers and teachers to a great extent. However, in pre-school ages
children are more open to learn by orders. For example, they learn how to treat their friends
by the warnings of teacher. Or they learn to take responsibility in their little worlds, they can
tide their beds, take of their shoes, coats and wear them, and even they can prepare their foods
as we know from Montessori methods.
What kind of people we want our children to be can be answered variously and
changes according to the character of teacher. If a teacher has a very nationalist nature, s/he
will try to enhance the nationalist feelings on her/his students. And generally, as I know from
my primary school years, they will be successful as students regard their teachers as idols.
However, in my opinion, If I would be a Primary School teacher, I would bring up children
who have free choices and critical approaches. They should learn the basic humanist rules
such as politeness, but they should have their free opinions about any subject. As mentioned
in the first paragraphes, as teachers should bring up individuals who are equipped physically,
congnitively, socially, emotionally and spirtually. If we can provide an atmosphere in which
children has a free minds and provide them an environment where they can shape their
characters heathily, they will be attached to the humanist rules and will improve their
characters through your keys you gave them in this period.
As pre-school teachers, we have an important role in their learning process, other than
the basic things like gaining eating, cleaning habit and so on. Learning process is not limited
in early childhood education years. It starts with in the womb of their mothers and lasts till the
death. Therefore, what we should do as teachers in their learning process is to give them the
main keys to learn and then their learning process will be in an healty way. For example, a
preschool teacher should provide his/her students the ways of self-control, self-awareness and
empathy which can be considered as the main points for their moral development. In additon,
we should bring our students up as individuals who can one day direct their worlds in
confidence and use their potential as individuals and members of society, contributing to the
world where they live.
When I look back on my own experiences during the early childhood education
period, I cannot see a healty period. Till the primary school, I did no get a professional
education. What I learned was just what my family and my friends on street taught me. As a
member of a crowded family and the littlest of the family, I understand now, I lack of some
important supports of my family. My father was and is a dominant character in the family and
we cannot act against his wish. In my childhood, I was afraid of my father like other members
of our family, including my mother. Everything in the house was supposed to be accorded
with my fathers wishes. Until the university years, I was stranger to the free ideas or I could
not express my own feelings and thoughts, which I still hesitate to mention. Even in the
primary school years, our teacher was not student-targeted, so, he ignored our emotional
development. To summarize, I could not have a healthy early childhood education and it
played an important role to choose my department in the university, to help children and
adults who have problems stemming from their early childhood ages and it can be an income
of my lacks during my early childhood education years.
