The Bible: Our Connection with God
Scriptures means writings. What then is a Sacred Scripture? A Sacred
Scripture is a collection of testimonies spread by the prophets of God. A prophet is a
person, a man tasked by God to be His representative to people on earth by means
of sharing His teachings in human form. A Sacred Scripture is the speech of God as
it is put down in writing under the breath of the Holy Spirit (Dei Verbum 9). The
church considers these teachings and writings as The Word of God because of its
purity and divinity.
The Bible itself is a Sacred Scripture. It is not a fictional story of God. It is also
not a book about what is morally right or wrong. It serves mainly as the Word of
God or more precisely, the Written Word of God. The bible as a word of God defines
three things: The Bible is word about God because it tells us what God has done in
the past and what the future might bring us people, The Bible is word from God
because it holds Gods original idea and will, and lastly, The Bible is word by God
because the original writer of the Bible is God, having us people as His co-writers.
The Bible was made through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Inspiration is the
active and dynamic influence of the Holy Spirit on the human writers of the Bible,
thus it allows them to write down what God wants them to share to the people. As
The Bible being inspired, it enables us to know Gods will and His teachings for us.
The Formation of the Sacred Scriptures undergoes several stagesthe actual
events, the oral tradition, the writing of Scriptures, and finally, the Canonization.
The word canon may mean several definitions: as a rule, norm, or standard;
or as an official list of things. In relation to the Bible Canonicity is a quality of books
to be recognized as inspired by God and normative for faith or morals. Canonization
is the official process and declaration of the Church pertaining to such inspired
books. These books need to pass certain standards in order to determine the
authenticity of the Divine Inspiration. Canonization is the act of the church
recognizing the Inspiraion of God in a book.
For us Christians, the Bible tells us of our divine origins and the purpose of
our existence. As rational beings, it is normal for us to ask questions regarding our
own true natural origin and fate. The Bible provides us the answers for these
questions. The Bible also tells us how to live the right way and guides us on how to
handle problems that may arise in our life. It teaches us how to live life fruitfully and
according to purpose. and finally, the Bible allows us to know Jesus Christ more as
our savior and healer, and to enter a personal relationship with him.
