Executive Summary
Strut-and-tie modeling (STM) is a conservative method used primarily
to design D-regions of structural components. A nonlinear strain distribution
exists within D-regions due to a load or geometric discontinuity. The
assumptions that plane section remains plane used to design regular
sections does not apply here anymore. The STM procedure is needed to
design the regions of structures where a nonlinear distribution of strains
dominates the behavior. Strut-and-tie modeling will always result in a
conservative solution if the basic design principles are satisfied. During the
design procedure, a truss model, or strut-and-tie model, is developed to
represent the flow of forces within a structure. A strut-and-tie model consists
of compression members referred to as struts, tension members called ties,
and the regions where these two components intersect is called nodes. Saint
Venants Principle suggested D-regions. Strut and tie modeling is mainly used
to design Deep Beams. Behavior of the Deep Beam can be explained by
considering the load transfer mechanism between the applied load and the
support. Deep Beam regions are dominated by combination of arch action
and truss action between the load P and the supports. . In strut and tie
model, the arch action and the direct load transfer is represented by diagonal
concrete strut called struts. Struts are in compression and cannot exceed the
compression strength of the concrete. The Tension member or tie is there to
balance the compression strut. The strength of the tie cannot exceed the
tension reinforcement. The joint where strut and tie meet is called nodes.
Concrete around the nodes is called nodal zones. Nodal zones transfer the
forces from the inclined struts to other struts, ties, and joints.
