Subject or Topic: Endangered Insects

Grade Level: 3rd Grade

STANDARD: (Common Core):


3.1.3.A1: Describe characteristics of living things that help identify them.
3.1.3.A2: Describe the basic needs of living things & their dependence on light, food, air, water, and shelter.

I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes):


Students will be able to identify different types of endangered insects. Students will also know how these insects impact our world
and what it means if nothing is done to help them.
II. Instructional Materials:
Art supplies
Pen pencil paper
Computer access
Poster board

III. Subject Matter/ Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea, outline of additional content):
A. Prerequisite skills
Prior knowledge on how to do a quick write. Script building and article creation. Knowledge about persuasive writing.

C. Big Idea
Students will create some form of advertising asking for the saving of their insect.
D. Content
The teacher will have the students create an advertisement asking the world to save their endangered insect.
The teacher will have the students present their insect advertisement to the class.
Students can make a video, front page paper, newsletter, magazine.
IV. Implementation:
A. Introduction
Today class we will be learning about insects that are on the endangered species list. Each of you will pair up and pick an insect on
the list. You will then create some form of advertisement to the world explaining why they should save your insect. This can be a
video or some type of news article.
The teacher will give the students the list of insects and they will go over each one.
The teacher will then explain the expectations and requirements to the students.

B. Development
Teacher will walk around room and touch base with each group and see what their plan is. If the teacher likes the plan he will
approve and allow the students to continue.
After creation the students will have to present their project to the class..

C. Closure
So we heard from everyone about how important it is to save these insects. Once they are gone they are gone for good. Before you
leave fill out the exit slip that goes along with the projects.

D. Accommodations / Differentiation One student with physical disability


For the bug creation activity there will be bigger markers available for easier use. Also a bigger piece of paper to draw on.
Process: Instruction will not change but amount of time given to student for activity completion will increase. Also adapted
markers and paper will be used.If student gets fatigued while writing paragraph they can be given more time or only do two or three
sentences.

E. Assessment/Evaluation plan 1. Formative: A teacher created rubric will be used to assess the students work.
2. Summative: There is no summative assessment.
