FEM - Overview
Finite element in engineering was initially developed on a physical basis
for the analysis of problems in structural mechanics
However, it was soon recognized that the technique could be appplied
equally well to the solution of other classes of problems

FEM - Overview
Finite element method is used to solve physical problems in engineering

analysis and design
Physical problem typically involves an acual structure or structural
component subjected to certain loads, e.g. mechnaical, thermal, chemical,
electrical etc.
Idealization of physical problem to a mathematical model requires certain
assumptions that together leads to differential equations governing the
mathematical model
Finite element analysis solves this mathematical model

FEM - Overview
Finite element method is a method of obtaining numerical solutions to

mathematical equations governing problems of interests such as problems
of stress analysis, heat transferm fluid flows, electric field etc.
The common feature in FE analysis of problems of all types is
discretization of the spatial domain of the posed problem into finite sized
element
Piecewise approximation of function of interest over the domain of the
problem is obtained by means of polynomials, each defined over a finite
element and expressed in terms of nodal values of the function at element
nodes

FEM - Overview
Since finite element solution technique is a numerical procedure, it is

necessary to assess the solution accuracy
If the accuracy criteria are not met, the numerical solution has to be
repeated with refined parameters
Finite element solution will solve only the selected mathematical model
and that all assumptions in this model will be reflected in the predicted
response
Hence the choice of an appropirate mathematical model is crucial and
completely determines the insight into the actual physical problem that
we can obtain by the analysis
These models will clearly be selected depending on what phenomena are
to be predicted
It is most important to select mathematical models that are reliable
effective in predicting the quantities sought

FEM - Overview
To assess the results by the solution of a chosen mathematical model, it
may be necessary to also solve higher-order mathematical models
For example, a beam structure may first be analyzed using
Bernoulli beam theory, then

Timoshenko beam theory, then
two-dimensional plane stress theory, and finally
using a fully three-dimensional continuum model
With these hierarchial models the analysis will include every response
effects but will also lead to increasingly more costly solutions
