Waste products of vegetable origin are

available all over the world, most of
which have not been recovered in the
past. These products are now saved
to an increasing extent and processed
for further use.

The place of installation for a processing plant to handle cellulosecontaining vegetable products
depends on the type of product and
the final use of the pellets which have
been produced.
Straw is processed in the area of
cultivation to avoid long distance

transport and the produced pellets

with a high bulk density are used
thermally, for example.
Husks and other waste products are
produced during processing. They are
pelleted to reduce their volume. The
pellets are almost dust-free, easy to
transport and easy to store.

The quantity of straw produced in an

area of cultivation and the economic
possibilities of transport determine
the location and the capacity of a processing plant.

If the chosen location offers favourable

climatic conditions, straw which has
been pressed to bales can be stored
in the open air. In wet areas straw
should be protected by a canvas cloth
or be stored inside under a roof.

A good straw quality is only ensured

by bringing the straw immediately to
the appropriate storage. This has a
decisive influence on the quality of the
final product.

Plants for the production of straw

pellets as alternative fuel
In this plant, rape straw is pelleted for
subsequent thermal utilization and
energy recovery on a large scale.

The pelleting plants can also be used

for processing other biomass products
(see page 2) to alternative fuels.

In the last decades, KAHL has

supplied many complete straw
pelleting plants.

The Core of the Plant:

High-Capacity Presses from KAHL

Advantages
of the KAHL pelleting presses
The large pelleting chambers
prevent blockings.
The low roller speed ensures a
good deaeration of the product.
The press noise is below 70 dbA.
The large die surface results in a
high throughput.
The pellet quality can be controlled
by adjusting the roller gap.

Straw in big bales is supplied via the

barn floor and is taken by a conveyor
belt to the shredder. The chopped
material then passes the proportioning
units and is fed to the straw mill.
Stones and metal particles are
separated before the mill. If it is not
necessary to grind the straw to a finer
degree, the mill can be by-passed.

KAHL Belt cooler

Normally, an industrial pelleting plant
is equipped with one or several
coolers and ideally works round the
clock, up to 8,000 operating hours
per year.

Our own production line

guarantees quality
All main machines, such as hammer
mills, belt driers, pelleting presses and
coolers, are produced in our factory at
Reinbek near Hamburg. Here we also
have our own pilot plant for carrying
out pelleting tests with different
products.

KAHL
Partner of the Recycling Industry

KAHL Pelleting presses are

extremely suitable for compacting
a large variety of products.
Pelleting of renewable raw materials
for energy recovery has been a topic
for KAHL for more than 30 years, after
receiving corresponding research
assignments following the energy crisis
in the 1970's. Straw and dried forage
pelleting plants have formed part of
our delivery programme since then,
too. So, we can rely on long-standing
experience.

Possible applications of the KAHL

pelleting press:
Wood waste
Sawdust
Wood and sanding dust
Straw
Agricultural biomass
Waste paper
Municipal and industrial waste
Waste tyres
Sewage sludge
Plastic waste
and many more ...

Heavy machinery pays off when it

comes to processing of these
products. The result is a high
operational safety and availability for
continuous operation of the plant.
