HOME IN GREATEST COMEBACK GAME
EVER
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Townsville,QLD | Simply the greatest, most amazing comeback ever
in the history of the National Super League. That is the best way to
describe the Blues two hail marys that won them this game against
the Townsville Marlins. Down by 10 with 1m35 on the clock, Sydney
needed a miracle and no one was expecting one. It started with
Patrick Gill scrambling up the middle but failing to slide. He was hit
hard by the defence and winded meaning he could not get off the
field and so an injury time out was charged to Townsville. This saved
40 seconds off the lock. The Marlins kicked the field goal and were
hapy with themselves and so they should have been. No one could
lose this game from here.
With the bal at their own 27 after the kick off, Peter
Harper found Aaron gela who showed the Blues desperation by
scrambling out of bounds to stop the clock. A couple of
incompletions stifled the Blues attack but Harper would not stop
trying. He was able to find some time and space in the pocket and
Kevin Louisi ran a wheel route to the outside. Two defenders zoning
out collided and dropped off coverage whilst Safety Paul Sezer was
caught looking into the back field and allowed too much room for
the receiver. Harpers pass was perfect and Louisi raced into the end
zone.
Still down by 6 the Blues now had a chance although still
slim. Recovering the kick off was the first objective and a great
bounce saw Mitchell Payne power his way to the ball. It was simply
a case of wanting it more. Now under pressure Townsville needed to
respond and Coach Chris Simpson dialled up a blitz which caught
the Blues unaware and Harper was sacked. The clock now ticked on
but that play only served to increase the Marlins false complacency.
Harper went again and this time a simple streak route saw Mark
Walker get behind the defence, outmuscling he way past some
physical contact and again Harper was on the money. Two hail
Marys in the final 35 seconds and the Blues had their most
unbelievable victory.
This was one of the greatest wins by this club of all time
Graeme Eadie said after the game. To be down by so much, To
never give up. To steal a win up here, this is the result that will
propel us into the finals. Eadie should be rightly excited by the win
as it is one that he should never have had. In all honesty the Blues
were dominated by the Marlins in the second half despite the high
intensity contest. Townsville held on early as Sydney threw
everything at them and after conceding touchdown to Hayden
Cannings, the Marlins got one back with Moseses Tepania.
JP Gutherson then scored to open the third quarter before
two Ngataua Graham field goals lengthened the lead to 20-7.
Sydney meanwhile were stopped on downs then fumbled the ball
away and fell out of the contest. That was until the final two
minutes when miracles do happen.
