----------------------------------------------Brisbane,QLD | The Brisbane Maroons won a hard fought
encounter 17-4 against the Perth Cougars. Playing
without their star Quarterback Robbie Vaivai, Brisbane
showed they are a tough and well coached team and will
continue to win more than they lose.
That said the conditions did favour them. "I thought we
got an advantage with the rain. It was so wet out there.
That limited what Perth could do and brought them back
to us" said Coach Craig Barry. The Maroons won the
turnover battle 4-0 and it was that coupled with
outstanding special teams play from Punter Lionel
Hitchcock that proved the difference. Hitchock pinned
the Cougars inside their 10 on no less than 5 occasions.
The opening score came early in the second quarter after
Hitchock had punted the ball out at the Perth 1 yard
line. Fullback Sam Jowett tried to plunge up the middle
but as he wriggled out of a tackle the ball wriggled out
of his grasp and was recovered by Alvin Allwood. Matthew
Wayne-Smith soon converted it with a touchdown run 2
plays later.
Perth responded with a long drive but after a penalty
for clipping they were held to a Kieron Geia field
goal."We were not mentally tough enough" said Coach John
Simon. "They made the plays that were needed. We were
not prepared to tough it out in the conditions" he said.
The second and final touchdown of the game also came
after a turnover. This time James Zelezniack was
intercepted by Jenoris Jenkins after the ball was
deflected. Tyson Annear having his first start for the
Maroons executed a perfect pass to Filipo Edwards over
the middle and the former Cougar scored.
The 14-3 lead in such wet conditions was always going to
make things tough. As a result Perth were stopped on
downs and then Zelezniack was picked again trying to
force a ball down the field. Cade Joass added another
field goal to wrap the game up at 17-3.

Injuries again dominated post match talk. Brisbane

losing halfback Matthew Wayne-Smith and wide out Jordan
Silvano. The Cougars also suffered with Corey Buck
dislocating his elbow.
