-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Brisbane,QLD- The amazing rivalry between the Townsville
Marlins and the Brisbane Maroons took another turn tonight
as yet another battle between the two took until overtime
to decide. And what a way it was decided. Right Guard
Steve Drotini somehow found himself with the ball in his
own end zone going the wrong way and with no way out as
Steven Cherry-Evans smashed him into the ground.
Despite desperate calls from the Brisbane bench the
officials ruled Safety and no review from upstairs would be
looked at.
The call was right but it still did not cool down
Brisbane Coach Craig Barry after the game 'Such a big
decision, they need to make sure it is right. At the time
there was so much confusion, it was such a big call they
need to use the tools, that's all I am saying".
Despite Patrick Gill throwing an early interception
that gave Brisbane the lead through a field goal, it was
Townsville that did most of the running. Tokeru Morffet
exploded on the ensuing kick off before Gill found JP
Gutherson deep on a wheel right down the right hand side.
Brisbane bounced back just before the half as Robbie Vaivai
hit his Tight End Mike Eisenhuth in double coverage from
15 yards out.
The teams traded touchdowns and then traded
field goals before Vaivai ran in the go ahead score with just
1m 17 remaining. Gill was cool in a crisis and the way he
guided the team down the field it looked like he was in total
control. His 6 play drive set up Ngatau Graham from 40
yards and his kick sent the game into overtime.
The Marlins won the toss and received. After a
promising start to the drive a sack by Matt Hartmann
forced a punt. Former Maroon punter Paul Lovegrove was
signed for his accuracy and an amazing punt put his former
team at their own 2 yard line. After an unsuccessful pass,
Brisbane called upon rookie Jayden Shaumkel who tried to
plough through the defence over his right tackle. A missed
block allowed Ropati Freeman a free shot on Shaumkel and
the ball spiralled up in the air for Drotini to catch it in the
endzone.
