INTRODUCTION:
Rafhan Best foods Limited are an affiliate of Bestfoods, USA. Bestfoods one of the
largest US food companies, with a worldwide sale of US $ 8.64 billion in 2000 and an

operating income of US $ 1.33 billion. Bestfoods has operation in more than 60 countries
and products marketed in more than 110 countries around the world.
Rafhan Bestfoods Limited, formerly consumer business of CPC Rafhan Limited, came
into decision of the parent company in USA to spin off its corn refining business and
rename consumer business as Bestfoods.
HISTORY OF COMPANY:
Rafhan Maize Products Co. Ltd. started its operations in 1952 as a pioneer maize
processing industry in Pakistan.
Hajji Muhammad Shafi (Late) was the founder of the company. Hajji Muhammad Shafi
was an innovative person. He derived the company name (Rafhan) very tactfully from his
three sons.
The names of his sons are:
Muhammad Rafi
Muhammad Hanif
Muhammad Nisar
Rafi Hanif Nisar
Raf Ha
Rafhan
In 1952 the company was established on very small scale. at that time it was involved in
manufacturing of corn product only. During there work Mr. Shafi researched that the
demand of starch will increase in the future. Because of no rapid preparation of starch at
that time so Mr. Hajji Sharif decided to produce starch from corn. For these reason he
decided to import machinery from abroad and decided to sell its 50% shares to any big
company. So an American firm called cpc took 50% shares of Rafhan and in 1998 best
foods took the possession of the Rafhan due to which it become Rafhan best foods. And
in 2000 best is hand over to lever brothers. Due to which it become Rafhan best food
(Unilever Company).

In this way, the popular name of Rafhan is invented. Today brand name Rafhan is very
popular among people.

Strengths:
1. Rafhan is an affiliate of CPI Inc. USA, so it always enjoy the status & respect of
leading MNC during exports & imports or any transaction.
2. Rafhan Enjoys monopolistic status as there is no big rival & no cut throat
competition.
3. According to research Rafhan always gets positive response from its customers
because the innovative & customer focused approach of its management.
4. In Rafhan, mostly people are very high caliber, potential, profile that makes it in
always Top 25 companies of Pakistan.
Weaknesses:
1. Their focus is Marjory on industrial products & Rafhan mostly involves in Business
to Business transactions. Due to this reason they are not enjoying bulk of profit, they
should go for consumer goods marketing.
2. Some time they neglect the importance of good packing material to save cost, but it
is very harmful during exports.
3. Rafhans major focus on corn & its derivatives, they never plan to diversify their
business although they have greater brand equity.
4. A lot of generic firms like Sitara ,Kohinoor & Ibrahim ,established their own energy
/power plants but Rafhan wont. They should focus on it.
Opportunities:
1. Due to ISO, WTO, demand of high standard products is increased and Rafhan is
meeting all standards, so they can get peaks.
2. In Middle East due to some adoption of western life style, consumption of starches
has been increased, so Rafhan can get benefit from it.
3. Awareness growing dissatisfaction with competitors and increasing awareness about
health and hygiene issues have led to increased Rafhans product consumption. 4.

Before WTO, Mid East & some Asian countries had applied high duties on import of
starches & glucose in their countries ,but now they have reduced up to certain level.
Threats:
1. Rafhan has to face strong competition with Indian & Chinese companies which are
producing low cost & high quality products.
2. Rafhans focus is only Maize for its production, but due to one or another reason
growers are not growing maize in bulk which yields shortage and high prices.
3. Due to present energy crises its Herculean task to meet demands of exports in time.
