TRACER STUDY OF BACHELOR IN TECHNICAL TEACHER EDUCATION


GRADUATES OF MINDORO STATE COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND
TECHNOLOGY CALAPAN CITY CAMPUS FROM 2008 TO 2013

Abstract
Mindoro State College of Agriculture and Technology Calapan City Campus
(MinSCAT- Calapan City Campus) is the only institution of higher learning in Oriental Mindoro
which offers the Bachelor of Technical Teacher Education (BTTE) program. Tracing back its
roots, the MinSCAT Calapan Campus, formerly called Calapan School of Arts and Trade
(CSAT), was established as a government secondary school in 1961 but only started operating
five years later. In 1972, CSAT merited the approval of the Ministry of Education, Culture and
Sports (MECS) to offer Technical Education Curriculum. Efforts to convert CSAT into a higher
education authorized to offer degree courses were realized with the approval of R.A. 8076 in
June 19, 1995 converting this school to Polytechnic College of Calapan (PCC). With the
integration, then PCC, has evolved as MinSCAT Calapan Campus.
Bachelor of Technical Teacher Education, being the flagship course, specializes on
various fields of technology namely, automotive, drafting, electrical, electronics, foods service
management and garments and fashion. This course caters to students who would like to pursue
an education degree integrated with technical skills, and provides a strong foundation in
designing and developing teaching and learning experiences through workshops and classroom
settings.
This tracer study aims to determine the employment status of the graduates of Bachelor in
Technical Teacher Education (BTTE) of MinSCAT-Calapan City Campus from 2008-2013. It
also intends to identify the competencies/skills learned from MinSCAT-Calapan City Campus
considered by the respondents useful in meeting the demands of their present work. The result
will serve as basis for evaluation of the current BTTE program of the MinSCAT-Calapan City
Campus. It employed descriptive method of research using interviews supplemented by survey
and use of secondary data.
There were 117 graduates of the MinSCAT Calapan City Campus BTTE program from 2008
to 2013. One hundred or 85.47% were traced as to their present employment. The study shows
high employment rate among the BTTE graduates, 89.00% are employed and only 11.00% are
unemployed and are still looking for work. Majority (61%) are professional teachers while 33%
are in technical work. As to the status of appointment, 53.93% of the respondents are regular,
39.33% are contractual, 4.49% are probationary while 2.25% are self-employed.
Most of them, that is 63%, found their first job in less than a year after graduation.
Competencies learned in College considered by the graduates as useful in their present work are
skills in communication, technical, information technology, human relations, problem solving,
and critical thinking.

This study reveals that graduates of BTTE are in-demand in the labor market. It recommends
a stronger campaign that emphasizes the high demand of this course in the labor market so that
more students will be attracted to enroll in it. The administration and faculty of the College of
Technical Teacher Education are challenged to maintain a very high degree of graduate
satisfaction while keeping pace with changing professional requirements. They must continue to
develop graduates' employability and enhance the attributes that make them employable. The
graduating students must be advised to continue their professional development and lifelong
learning by attending more trainings being offered by TESDA and other training centers.
Objectives:
The study was designed to conduct an inventory of the BTTE graduates from SY 20082009 to 2012- 2013 to provide a basis for evaluation to the current BTTE program of the
MinSCAT-Calapan City Campus.
Specifically, it aims to:
1. describe the employment status of the graduates.
2. describe the job placement profile of the respondents in terms of :
2.1 job description
2.2 status of appointment
2.3 means of finding the first job
2.4 length of time in finding their first job
2.5 means of finding the present job
2.6 reasons for unemployment
3. identify the competencies/skills learned from MinSCAT Calapan City Campus considered
by the respondents useful in meeting the demands of their present work.
METHODOLOGY
This study employed descriptive method of research using interviews supplemented by
survey and use of secondary data. The data was collected from January 2008 to January 2014.
The data collected were processed using descriptive statistics such as mean, frequency and
percentage. Inferential statistics were not used as no test of relationships was done.
The respondents of the study were the BTTE graduates of Mindoro State College of
Agriculture and Technology Calapan City Campus from 2008-2009 to 2012-2013.
Profile of BTTE graduates (2008-2013):
There were 117 graduates of MinSCAT Calapan City BTTE curriculum from 2008-2013.
Forty five (38.46%) graduates were traced as to their present employment.
Most of the respondents had specialized in Food Service Management (26.67%). (see
Table 1a and b).
Majority were female, single with ages ranging from 22-23 years old (see Table 2a, b and
c).

Employment Status of the BTTE graduates
Table 3 shows the Frequency Distribution of the respondents according to their
employment status. The data show that most of the respondents are employed (86.67%). Four (4)
respondents or 8.89% are unemployed; two (2) respondents or 4.44% are underemployed.

Job Description of the BTTE graduates
Table 4 reveals that 73.18% or 30 respondents are doing technical/supervisory/
professional jobs as teachers, quality controllers, technical service representatives, etc.
Meanwhile, 14.63% or 6 respondents are doing managerial or executive jobs and 12.19% or 5
respondents are doing rank/ clerical jobs as secretary/ promo clerks.

Status of appointment of the BTTE graduates


Table 5 presents the Frequency Distribution of the respondents according to their present
status of appointment. The data show that most of the respondents are contractual employees
(36.6%). Fourteen (14) respondents or 34.1% are regular/permanently employed; eleven (11)
respondents or 26.8% are temporary and one (2.4%) is employed in a casual basis.

Means of finding their first jobs
About 45.5% or 20 respondents found their first job by applying personally in the
company while 38.6% or 17 respondents got the information about their first job from their
friends/ relatives. Four respondents (9.1%) got their job through information from MinSCAT.

About 45.45% or 20 respondents got their first job 1-6 months after graduating while
29.5% or 13 respondents were able to have their first jobs after 7-11 months. Six respondents or
13.6% got their jobs 1-2 years after graduating while 3 respondents (6.8%) after 2-3 years.

About 19 respondents or 46.3% got their present jobs information from their friends/
relatives while 15 respondents or 36.6% applied personally. Four (9.8%) of the respondents
found the job information from MinSCAT, two (4.9%) from job fairs and one (2.4%) was called
by the company who got his information from MinSCAT.

Reasons for Unemployment
Four of the respondents were unemployed due to the following reasons: end of contract
(2 respondents or 50%); family concerns (1 respondent or 25%) and resignation (1 respondent or
25%).

Competencies learned during College which are being applied in the current job
About 37 respondents answered that communication skills give them a great advantage in
their job; 35 find human relations skills useful; 33 utilize their technical skills; 31 benefit from
their information technology skills; 29 apply critical thinking skills; 28 practice problem solving
skills; and 11 said that their entrepreneurial skills are very useful also.

Conclusions:
Based on the findings, the researcher arrived with the following conclusions:

1. Majority of the respondents are female.


2. Most of the respondents are in the age bracket of 22-23 years old.
3. Majority of the graduates are still single.
4. Majority of the graduates are employed.
5. The nature or type of jobs of the majority of the graduates are professional, technical
or supervisory such as teacher and quality control/ assurance.
6. Majority of the respondents are in contractual status of employment.
7. Most of the respondents found their first job by personally applying in companies.
8. Most of the respondents had their jobs 6-11 months after graduating from college.
9. Most of the graduates found their present jobs through information from their
friends/relatives.
10. The reasons for unemployment were: resignation from the job, end of contract and
family concerns.
11. The BTTE graduates found communication, human relations and technical skills
very relevant competencies which they learned in College.
Recommendations:
1. MinSCAT, through the BTTE Program, should strengthen formation and trainings on
competencies, skills and work related values since these are very much useful in
employment.
2. The program must focus on academic development, employment opportunity and
enhancing leadership capability of BTTE students as well as faculty members.
3. Graduates could attend more training offered by TESDA that will develop their practical
skills as teachers and as professionals.
4. An alumni representative must be designated for every batch of graduates so that they can
be located or contacted more easily.
5. Strengthen the Job Placement office of MinSCAT so that a dynamic database on graduate
employability can be established.
6. For future researcher to adopt a more aggregate sample, enough to represent a wide array
of disciplines for a more complete understanding of graduate employability.
