what you have, it's what you do with what you have that counts!
What counts most for a woman, or a man, is to be perfectly
comfortable with themselves, and to love what they are doing!
My premise is simple. Any person can ignite their imagination,
their ingenuity, to become a creative, interesting individual. You can
be what you want to be. You can do what you enjoy best. All it takes
is to be realistic about your goals, and then work at it! It is never
too early or too late to begin.

I do it by approaching fashion in a conceptual manner, using
concepts to save time and money. The concepts will ease your frustration over what you know you can wear best, and what is being

Elegant leather boots and a rakishly tilted hat completed the attractive ensemble. She was warm, outgoing, immensely attractive and we

She seldom wears straight skirts, preferring the more flattering Aline and softly gathered dirndl-types. She is tall enough to carry the

ectomorph is sensitive, tense and can be neurotic. Mentally they are
alert, intelligent and generally are in the best health of the three body
types.
Since there are many variables to these three basic body shapes
and many have multiple characteristics of all three, I have formulated a group of six figure types which I have culled from observing

body shapes
and in some instances, contradictory. This
is because the advice on what to avoid, and what to choose relates
to more than one body shape. Excessive contrasts in color, texture,
line and design are as difficult to wear for one woman of a particular
size and shape as another. There are infinite variables both in body
shapes, and in design which relate to all.
To successfully camouflage an unproportioned figure requires a
subtle touch and a sense of balance in choosing color, texture, line
and design. One must create a harmonic symmetry with proportion
and composition. The categories which follow lists ideas not only for
the six figure shapes, but for specific parts of the face and body. Since
these are generalizations meant for the majority, individual likes,
dislikes and experiences with clothes and accessories will create exceptions to what is advised.
Do not be concerned. You either know your body better than
anyone or you are preparing to do so with this book. Since your
comfort and ease with clothes is what is most important, a compromise must be struck between what is suggested, what you enjoy and
what you are used to wearing. If I have recommended avoiding items
for your figure type that you wear and are comfortable with, reconsider them in the full length mirror. On the other hand if I have listed
as a "good choice" an item which is anathema to you, why not give
it a try? All you have to lose is the same old image!

you want more from clothes, choose CLASSICS! If ease, versaeconomy and creativity are important to you, choose CLASSICS! Classics work, and they work simply because they offer a
variety of options. When deftly accessorized, classics swing from
trend to trend. They look chic and in step with style. Trendy things
are fun, but following a trend too slavishly can trip you up. While
today almost anything goes, do you feel attractive and comfortable in

You are the sum total of many moods, interests and imagination
and the way you wear clothes highlights your dramatic ability to be
whatever you want to be. At one time coordinating clothes was
structured, sterile, with rigid rules for what was "proper". Many
remember white gloves, pillbox hat and pearls with basic black.
While it is easier to follow blueprints of what to wear when and how,
it is more creative and relaxing to allow our tastes free rein, to

on spartan budgets ought to indulge occasionally in exquisite lingerie, or at least trim what they have with lace and satin. Lace trimmings and satin ribbons by the yard are still one of the best buys in
stores. Panties, bras, slips, camisoles can be trimmed by hand as one
watches television, or whenever there is free time. Rather than buy
tennis panties in sports shops, buy terry or cotton briefs in bargain
basements and trim them yourself to save money.
Lovely lingerie can be collected by shopping sales, or by using
Christmas gift certificates after the holidays. If you let friends and
family know that the gift you enjoy most is lingerie, the lushest,
laciest, least practical possible, you will soon have enviable ensembles.

sheer or clinging fabrics, they are accessory coordinates which add
color and interest to their outer layers.
A woman at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs one balmy June
evening caught my attention. She wore a sheer, silk organza dress in
soft silver grey. Underneath, a slip of pink and grey silk showed
through the plunging bodice. The cocktail party was crowded and
as we converged on the buffet, I complimented the woman on the
dress. She recognized me from my show that morning and confided:
"This dress is one of those collectibles you talked about. When I
first bought it years ago, it had three layers of turquoise taffeta slips
which made the skirt very full. I tired of that, and needed a slimmer
line, because I've gained some weight. I bought the pink and grey silk
print and made the slip and camisole, which incidentally I can wear
alone, if I want a lean, bare look."

improved products being constantly introduced.
Your shape, rather than your age, determines how you look braless
in clothes. There are young women whose breasts are not fit, and
mature women who can still pass the pencil test. Generally it is safest
if you limit going bra-less to particular clothes such as: halter tops,

you know exactly which brassiere style you prefer and you
have purchased it time and time again, it is best to try a new brassiere
on for fit, each time you shop. Designs change constantly, but more
to the point, so do you! Changes occur in your breasts due to menses,
childbirth, oral contraceptives, weight loss, (or gain), and hormonal
increases and decreases.
Buying the right size brassiere for your figure assures a smooth
look. How well I remember the first time I was fitted for a brassiere!
I was a teenager and painfully shy. I hugged my blouse to me, until
the salesclerk insisted I drop it. I was so surprised when she measured the area under my bust I lost my inhibition about standing
there topless. Before going to the store I had measured myself at
home, placing the tape around my body, directly over the nipples.
"Aren't you going to measure my bust?" I asked.
"Of course," she laughed, "this is all part of it. I do this first to
determine your body size. I measure the ribcage and then add five
inches to find out what size you should wear."
"What am I?" I asked, curious. I had never measured anything
other than my waist, bust and hips before.
"Thirty inches, that means you would wear a size 36."
"I thought you said, five inches."
"I did," she replied, "but if you fall in between, we go up to the
next larger size so that the band won't be too tight."
She then measured across the nipples of my breasts to determine
my cup size. If this measurement is one inch more than the ribcage
measurement you wear an A-cup; two inches more, B; three inches,
C; four, D.

FURS
Fur is fabulous for sure, and as long as you do not wear furs
from endangered species, they are a useful, flattering addition to
an accessory collection. Whether you choose a hat, collar, ascot,
vest, jacket, shawl or coat; furs add a look of luxury to the plainest outfit. A fur should be the best you can afford. A fine lambskin is preferable to cheap mink, and a good fur trim is better
than a full coat of a lifeless, dull, shedding bargain. Furs are a
luxury item only as long as they look luxurious.

A hat that is truly a hat, worn with confidence and flair, not only

How many times has your head turned in an airport or on a city
street when a man wearing a dashing snapbrim strides by, when a
vibrant young woman, hair flying under a perky beret, runs to greet
friends, or when a chic, stylish lady in a slouch hat, trenchcoat and

with that lovely band on your third finger, left hand. Good quality
pearls, antique cameos or gold chains may be worn. For a truly
elegant touch, wear a small, silky hat to blend with the suit or dress.
Shoes and handbag should be understated and softly feminine.
When attending such a ceremony, wear a simple suit and silk
blouse in a subdued shade. Do not wear the same color, or a color
similar in tone, to that chosen by the bride. If she is wearing a hat,
you should too, but keep it small and understated. A guest at a
wedding should never compete with the lady being married.

SPECIAL CELEBRATIONS
Award dinners, banquets, bar and bas mitzvahs, christenings,
communions, graduations, reunions, are all very special occasions at
which you want to look glamorous, elegant and feminine.
If you are to receive an award at a black-tie affair, wear a dressy,
dramatic long gown that signifies your stature. If it is not black-tie,
wear the prettiest, softest dinner dress or suit you have. When accepting or presenting awards wear a warm, rich color enhancing to your

INFANTICIPA TING
Except for getting married, no time is more special than the nine
months one awaits the birth of their first child. Nor does any time
seem as interminably long. Yet no period in a woman's life fades
faster, and it is as nature intended. If we remembered the discomforts, the bulge of our bodies better, we would probably be less eager
to try it again. I remember my pregnancies only with joy, and I
cherish three healthy, intelligent children

closed lids. Unwind. When your eyes tire, "palm" them. Cup the
palms of your hands over your eyes. Shut out all light with the cupping. Think
black velvet. Sink deeper and deeper into the black
velvet. If you have been working steadily or driving, your eyes need
this momentary rest. You will be amazed at how refreshed they feel
after five minutes of "palming."
Wash your eyes each day, just as you brush your teeth. Use mild
boric acid solution, commercial eye wash or eye drops. It is especially
important if you use your eyes a great deal in your work; if you live in
air-polluted cities; if you have been confined in a smoke filled room;
if you have been at the beach. And wash your eyes before you put on

Eye areas wrinkle first because the skin around the eye does not
manufacture its own oil. Use a light eye cream at all times. Sleep with
it on, and wear it outdoors. Apply it lightly under makeup. If you
intend to spend the day sailing, skiing, sunning, swimming or riding
on a motorcycle, put a generous layer on. Do not ever rub eyes or
rub cream into the skin around the eyes. Pat gently. Exercise stimulates circulation under eye areas and a light tapping with your fingers
is you apply eye cream is beneficial.

Because of my hair I am ultra-sensitive to the importance of hair
in creating the crowning touch to the finished look. A handsome
head of hair, beautifully styled makes one look sensational. And how

you are going to get it, for the hair you are born with is the hair you
will have! You can never have more, no matter what some may
promise. Your body allows only the number of hairs your genetic
printout calls for, and no amount of brushing, oiling, shampooing,
conditioning and dressing is going to change that.
Without proper care, you could lose what you have even with a
good genetic heritage. Chemicals, air pollution, poor nutrition,

And you can try on a new color and style without having to change
your own hair! If you contemplate changing your hair color or style,
try on some wigs first before making this important decision. You
might even buy the wig closest to what you want and live with it for
a while to see if it really suits your mood and needs.
Wigs are wonderful for traveling, especially if you will be gone for
a period of time and your hair begins to change color at the roots.
If you are reluctant to have your hair treated enroute, a wig solves
the problem.

Meg is one of those millions of women with closets of collectibles

wear clothes you have forgotten about and to which you will add new
life and a new dimension. You know how good it feels when you've
cleaned up that mess in the garage? Cleaning out a closet is even
better. It is the ultimate high of housework.
The only way to reorganize a closet is all the way. Halfway measures won't work. Choose a time when nothing will interfere, when
you can be alone for a number of hours. Turn your favorite music
on and begin by taking everything out.
Prepare the room first for the clutter. If you have a portable
clothes rack, set it up. If not, arrange chairs, clear the bed and have
cartons handy in which to place clothes in their category together.
As you remove a garment, try it on. If it still fits your figure, your
personality and your lifestyle and is in tune with contemporary
fashion, it is a collectible. Keep it. If you find, however, that you
have not worn it for years, chances are you won't and unless it is a
special treasure you wish to keep as a memento (which should be
stored and wrapped in tissue paper) sell it, or give it away and get a
receipt for its value so you can write it off.
The compunction to keep fine quality clothes is strong and if you
are a good recycler that's fine, you will appreciate the recycling
suggestions offered later in this chapter. But if you cannot thread a
needle and the thought of altering anything makes you dash to
Dunkin' Donuts, keeping clothes with the intention of redoing them
is
unrealistic.
Major changes to duplicate new styles are expensive if done profesand chancey unless you are skilled. Therefore be realistic
about what you wish to keep when you restructure your closet,
recycle your clothes and reorganize.

The gold color chain I use as a necklace or belt in my show was
once the handle to a handbag. When the handbag wore out, I detached the chain. When the ruffled look was the rage years back, I
had kitchen curtains I yearned to get rid of, but my frugality prevented me tossing them out for no reason. Priscilla style organdy,
they were trimmed with yards and yards of lush ruffles. I made
collars and cuffs to create a ruffled look and use them to this day.

How vulnerable we are and how well merchandising executives
know our weaknesses. Their profit depends on your impulse purchases. All the oh-so-clever stimuli are intended to make you buy
without thinking because an impulse purchase is pure plus for a
store. Not that all on-the-spur-of-the-moment buys are bad. Seeing
something on sale that you really need and buying it is being sales
smart. But becoming diverted by budget breakers when you've
planned to buy something else is nothing more than giving into your
emotions and adding double digits to your deficit budget.

I set off June 19th with my dear friend Wanda Getter, Jeff
and Jonathan who were 11 and 13 years old, and a bright, seven
month old cherub who by the time the trip was over recognized every
ice cream and gasoline sign from Pennsylvania to California.
Wanda's husband and mine, both of whom hated camping and
disliked auto travel even more, made bets we would be back in a
week. We were on the road thirteen weeks and covered more than
13,000 miles, at first camping in a tent, and then in a trailer which
we bought enroute. It was such an incredible experience, we set forth
again in 1962, this time through the northern tier of the United
States headed to the Seattle World's Fair. We would have gone on to
Alaska except that I had to return early for a fall lecture season.
Being on the move is when one must muster all the organizational
talents one has, recognizing that comfort and convenience are essential, and most importantly, learning to travel as light as possible. Our
1960 trip almost ended five days out, because I took too much,

How lucky I was to experience healthful eating and living at the
age of nineteen! I had been a sickly child and no wonder. I never ate
a raw vegetable or tasted a tomato or strawberry until I went to live
with my Aunt Helen at the age of ten. When I rejoined my mother
a year after my grandmother's death, I was eleven years old. Since
Mother was at work, I was unsupervised and unknowing. I ate cake,
candy, ice-cream and loads of chocolate. My lunch was most often
Pepsi-Cola and canned peas. My dinner, overcooked meat and soggy
potatoes. I had measles five times and a constant cold, no matter
what the season. Many times during the year I was plagued with

mucus. My hair was thin, brittle; my nails spotted with white marks

form such a special part of your life. You can learn to select foods
carefully, achieving a compromise you can live with that incorporates healthful, natural foods. Then, occasional forays into foods that

Most important of all is to recognize and admit how harmful

various natural foods to your daily regime will be beneficial, and you
will eventually begin to eliminate foods which are non-nutritive. Use
your creativity and imagination to enhance these suggestions, but
remember, the closer you stick to the natural, uncooked, unadulterated food, the healthier it is. It takes time for tastebuds, and
