SECOND SUNDAY
Dear Parishioners,
On this second Sunday of Lent, we have the
account of the TRANSFIGURATION of Jesus on Mount
Tabor. St Luke records for us the words of God the
Father: This is my Son, the Chosen One. Listen to him.
It would seem that this experience on Mount Tabor was for Jesus benefit, as
well as for Peter, James and John.
Jesus had set his face towards Jerusalem. He indicated that its there
the Prophets die. He needed in his human condition to be affirmed by the
Father to continue the journey, even if it meant his death. The Transfiguration
also benefited the apostles in their time of need. It prepared them for
passion, death and resurrection of Jesus even if they did run away when the
test came! It helped them to pick themselves up after the trauma of the
crucifixion.
Let us remember the words of God the Father who invites us to listen to
Jesus. As we listen to him this Lent, we are aware that he is calling us to
follow him. we can do this by continuing to respond to the invitations to do
our best during this time of Lent. When we listen, we follow his call. May we
have the will and desire to keep to our commitments for Lent
VISIT TO ISTANBUL, TURKEY: The aims of the visit was to promote the
resumption of the peace process in Turkey; to visit and consult with Mr
Abdullah Ocalan who is currently detained at Imrali Prison in Turkey; to meet
and discuss with the Turkish Minister of Justice; to meet and discuss with
political parties, government representatives, civil society and lawyer
associations.
Sadly, the Delegation was not successful in meeting the Minster of
Justice. Neither were we allowed to visit Mr Ocalan in prison on Imrali Island.
We did have some very helpful meetings and dialogue with politicians, lawyers
and peace activists.
We were informed that Abdullah Ocalan has had no access to his lawyers
for the past five years. His family have not been able to visit him in over a
year. It is understood that he is in solitary confinement and there are serious
concerns about his state of health. The possible consequences of Abdullah
Ocalan dying in prison are too frightening to contemplate!
