ORDINARY TIME

27th SUNDAY IN

Dear Parishioners,
In our first reading the Prophet Habakkuk takes up
the question of how often the innocent suffer. The
question often asked: If God loves us, why doesnt he do something about
suffering; starvation in drought situations; allow tyrants to survive and all
the other woes that befall human nature? Here we have eternal questions
God promises that obedience to his divine will and loyalty to him in the
face of suffering will not go unnoticed or be without rewards.
St Paul has advice for the young Timothy who has just been given the
pastoral care of a Christian community. He is to speak boldly by the power
of the Holy Spirit, love and self-control. (This is what Ive been telling Fr
Damian!) We all have been entrusted with something precious, namely
our faith and we are to guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit.
In the Gospel, St Luke reminds us of the request made to Jesus: Lord,
increase our faith and so Jesus gives the example the mustard seed
and that we are servants of Jesus when we have done all we can do we
do no more that our duty. But being a servant of God and of Jesus, it is our
honour, not some sort of slavery or mere obligations.
WEEK 3 TIME, TREASURE, TALENTS: MY PARISH
COMMITMENT: Over the last two weeks we have been reflecting on our
BLESSINGS as a parish community; on the idea of STEWARDSHIP; being
responsible for looking after and building up our parish; parish expenses and
the idea of planning our weekly gift in relation to our ability to respond
financially. We now hopefully can make that COMMITMENT to a weekly
offering.
I am aware that sometimes we can be scared of giving away any bank
details. But be assured the information is safe. By having a standing order
it is helpful in so many ways. It is going to get increasingly more difficult to
get banks to take coins in the future various instructions are being given on
this aspect of our regular collection.
As indicated, Gift Aid Declaration can increase the finance very
significantly, hence the request to complete that section of the form too.
Many thanks for your generosity, patience and commitment to our
parish of St John Vianney.
WELCOME: We welcome new parishioners today. We also formally
introduce the new members of the Verbum Dei Community Fraternity. They
will hold an Open House from 3-5pm this Sunday. All are welcome.

SIGNING SCHOOL FORMS: Tuesday 18 October 3.30pm 4.30pm

GIVING APPEAL WEEKEND
THREE PROMISE CARDS
Each one must give as he has
decided in his heart, not
reluctantly or under compulsion,
for God loves a cheerful giver.
2 Corinthians 9:7
Over the last couple of weeks you
have heard about Stewardship and
Planned Giving. We have asked that
all parishioners prayerfully reflect on
what they contribute to our parish,
having taken into consideration the
needs of our parish and having
reflected on the message of
stewardship.

This weekend we ask that all

parishioners complete a promise
card. These cards will remain private
and confidential. Please provide your
full contact details and select the
method of offertory giving best
suited to you. If you pay UK income
tax, please sign the Gift Aid
declaration (in one name only) so
that the parish can claim 25p back
from the government for every 1
that you donate, at no extra cost to
yourself.
Finally, we thank you for all that you
already do for our parish. Without
your continued support, this
wonderful, living church would not
continue to be the spiritual center it
is today.
If you have any questions, there shall
be volunteers available after Mass.
Thank you.
