The key steps to find deflection of a beam using Macaulay's method involve redrawing the beam, writing the moment equation, integrating to get slope and deflection equations, and determining unknown coefficients.

The steps are: 1) Redraw the beam 2) Show all forces 3) Place x between loads 4) Add loads on either side if last load is distributed 5) Write moment equation 6) Integrate to get slope equation 7) Integrate slope equation to get deflection equation

The moment equation is called the elastic curve equation. It represents the relationship between the moment and the position along the beam.

Proc

Procedure for finding out the deflection of Beam by Macaulays method

1. First redraw cantilever Beam as support right side and free end left side.
2. Show all the force on the beam.
3. Then place the superposition of x between load furthest to the right and the right hand
support.
4. Then look at the load condition, If the last load is distributed load, then, add, same
amount of last load to the remaining distance on either side. Like shown.

5. The adding-extra load is for rearranged load condition to balancing the moment
equation.
6. Then write a one single moment equation with respect to x. Use the sign convention
for load acting upward (+ve), for load acting downward (-ve).
7. While writing the moment equation, for distributed load use a simple formula of

Wx2

as load acting downward. For compensating load which is distribute load

Wx2
acting upward, therefore the equation is +
2

8. Then the moment equation will be look like this for example.
For concentrate load acting at corner will be 6 ( x 0 )

2 (x 1 ) 2
For distributed load acting between 1m to 2.5 m will be
2
2
2 (x 1 )
For compensating load it will be +

9. For the above set up, the moment equation will be,

6 (x0)

( x 1 )2

(x

2 .5 )

d 2 y
= E I
d x2

This above equation is called Elastic curve equation.

10.Then do the first integration of above equation , then the equation will be

6(x 0

)2

( x 1 )3
23

(x

2 .5 )
dy
+ A = E I
23
dx

This equation is called slope of beam. Where

dy
is Slope of the beam.
dx

11.Again do the second integration of the above equation. It will be like this

6(x 0

23

)3

( x 1 )4
2 3 4

(x

2 .5 )
+ Ax + B = E I y
2 3 4

This above equation is called deflection of beam. Where y

y is the deflection of the
beam.
12. Now we dont know the value of coefficient of A and B. So we have to find out the
co-efficient value.
13. Let us take the slope of beam equation which is

6(x 0

)2

( x 1 )3
23

(x

2 .5 )
dy
+ A= E I
23
dx

dy
is slope of beam, Let, the super position of x is at the end of support, that is
dx
dy
x= 4m,(For this Particular condition of Load), then
will be zero as the slope at the support
dx
dy
end will be nothing. Substitute x = 4m and
= 0 , Find out the value of A. Remember if
dx

Where

the bracketed terms result is negative then you should treat that term as zero. Say the value
of A= -40.25.
14. Let us take the equation of deflection of beam, and substitute the value of A= -40.25.
Then the equation will be

6(x 0

23

)3

( x 1 )4
2 3 4
Page 2

(x

2 .5 )
40 . 25 x + B = E I y
2 3 4

15. Now let us take, when x=4m,(that is at the support), then y (deflection),will be zero.
As the deflection will be nothing at the support. Then, substitute x = 4m and y = 0 in
to deflection of beam equation and you can find out B. Say B = -24.7
16.Then, substitute A and B value in the deflection of beam equation you will get like
this

6(x 0

23

)3

( x 1 )4

2 3 4

(x

2 .5 )
40 . 25 x 24 . 7 = E I y
2 3 4

17.Now you know value of E ( youngs Modulus in KN/m ) and I ( Area Moment of
inertia in m ), you can choose any where in the beam as x value then you can find
out the value of deflection (y) in m.
2

18.Remember always E = KN/m and I = m for Force is KN, and length in m.
