Whats with all the brothers?

f youve got a brother, this is a good month

to take him to a movie. Three of the four
features in this issue focus on movies about
male siblings Four Brothers, The Brothers
Grimm and those hootin and hollerin brothers
of The Dukes of Hazzard.
Call it synergy, coincidence, or if youre really
pretentious you could even call it Jungs
concept of synchronicity but that would
probably get you a kick in the teeth.
It happens quite frequently in Hollywood
think of Dantes Peak and Volcano, Armageddon
and Deep Impact, A Bugs Life and Antz, all movies with very similar
themes released just months apart.
People often try to impose some sort of order to it all.
Like.
We had two movies about meteors crashing to Earth in 1998
because the end of the nineties was a time of relative security and in
our subconscious we knew it couldnt last
Or, A Bugs Life and Antz went into development in the mid-90s, a
few years after the end of the Me Decade, when our understanding
of our tiny place within big corporations was finally setting in.
So why all the movies about brothers?
Maybe it has to do with our search for strong personal bonds in a
society where friendships are becoming more and more disposable.
Or, it could be that George Bushs family values rhetoric has
seeped its way into Hollywood.
Cleeeearly, I havent got a clue. Better not to think too hard about
it. Theyre just movies.
If youve seen the documentary Lost in La Mancha, about director
Terry Gilliams difficult and ultimately doomed attempt to make
The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, youll find the story behind
The Brothers Grimm movie familiar. The difference here is that with
the help of two big stars, Heath Ledger and Matt Damon, it looks like
The Brothers Grimm will actually see the light of day. For Into the
Woods, page 28, Ledger and Damon describe how they had to contain Gilliams fears to help him pull off this oddball fantasy.
On page 34 we give you Righteous Brother, a Q&A session with
Four Brothers star Mark Wahlberg about filming in Toronto, missing
his little girl and why he might take early retirement from
Hollywood.
And its the famous Duke brothers curvy cousin, Daisy Duke, who
earns the spotlight in A Fresh Daisy, page 24. Writer Earl Dittman
went all the way to the scorching hot Louisiana set of The Dukes of
Hazzard to get the story straight from Jessica Simpsons lips.
Our lone feature about a film that has nothing to do with brothers
is Cabin Pressure, page 40, in which our cover girl, Ontarios own
Rachel McAdams, tells you about her first thriller,
Red Eye.
Having already mastered the snotty teen (The
Hot Chick, Mean Girls) and romantic leads (The
Notebook, Wedding Crashers), if McAdams can pull
off a good damsel-in-distress (her character is
pressured to assassinate a politician on a flight to
Miami), she may very well become the biggest
Canadian actress working in Hollywood.

The untimely death of Domino Harvey

The tough thing about making a movie
based on the exploits of a living person is
that their life tends to keep changing
especially when its as tempestuous and
explosive a life as that of Ford-modelturned-bounty-hunter Domino Harvey.
Domino, starring Keira Knightley as

Harvey, the child of The Manchurian

Candidate star Laurence Harvey and
Vogue model Paulene Stone, opens this
monthas scheduled.
An August release date had first been
announced back in April. But at the end
of May, just after Harvey was arrested in

Dominos cast,
from left: Edgar Ramirez,
Mickey Rourke and
Keira Knightley

conjunction with a $2-million drug bust,

the opening date was pushed back to
November. The producers said they didnt
want to compete with Knightleys other
film coming out that month, Pride &
Prejudice (since moved to September), but
there were also reports filmmakers wanted
to incorporate the arrest into the film.
Then just over a month ago, on
June 29th, news broke that Harvey had
been found dead in the bathtub of her
West Hollywood home. That same day the
films release date was moved back to
August 19th.
The films official site immediately
posted a page titled Statements
Regarding the Death of Domino Harvey,
in which producer Samuel Hadida says,
We were enormously saddened to hear of
Dominos untimely passing. She and I had
been conferring about her music to be
used in the film only weeks ago.
But there were also rumblings that
Harvey wasnt entirely happy with the
script. Although she was never directly
quoted, a source claimed Harvey was
furious that the movie portrayed her as a
very active heterosexual (apparently there
are some raunchy sex scenes), when in
fact she was a proud lesbian. MW

Its shocking how much time we spend thinking about celebrity

couples. We chat about the pics of Angelina and Brad on the
beach, pray for the safe return of Katie, and groan What the heck
were you thinking Rene?!
Since we invest ourselves emotionally in these couples lives,
why not invest financially as well? At the online gambling site
sportsinteraction.com you can bet on the outcomes of celebrity
hook-ups. For example, in June the site (whose home office is
located in Quebecs Kahnawake Mohawk Territory) gave 16-1 odds
that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie would wed before the end of the
year, and 7-2 odds that Jude Law and Sienna Miller would break up
in that same time period.
These bets are now closed, but new offerings pop up regularly,
including some wacky ones, like betting that Jennifer Garner and
Ben Affleck will name their newborn Bennifer. Seriously, if you bet
$10 and they actually do it, youll collect $510.
Yeaaahand theres some swampland in Beverly Hills you might

Sam Easton CHANGES HIS LUCK

Youve heard this hard luck story
before; a struggling actor without a
dime to his name, discouraged, ready
to pack it in, walks into an audition,
nails it, and lands a movie role that
changes his life.
It may be a clich, but its what
happened to Sam Easton not once, but
twice.
The 25-year-old Vancouver native
co-stars in this months action/drama
The Underclassman, and early next year
he pops up again as a voyeuristic youth

in Cheating Death: Final Destination 3.

I cant explain what these films have
done for me, says Easton on the phone
from his agents office in Vancouver.
Before I got The Underclassman Id
just done a four-month Yuk Yuks tour
from Sydney, Nova Scotia, to Vancouver,
B.C. I got paid very little and when I
came home I had holes in my shoes,
and had holes in my socks from the
holes in my shoes. My dad remarried, I
lived with him in his basement way up
in North Vancouver. My little sister and

My little sister and little stepbrother

would give me a toonie to take a bus
to go do stand-up, says Easton
famous 12 | august 2005

little stepbrother would give me a

toonie to take a bus to go do stand-up.
I was sad and poor.
Despite his dire situation, when it
came to auditioning for parts, he
believed he was funnier than the
material he was reading. So at the end
of his auditions he would tack on stuff
he had written and in the case of
The Underclassman, he blew away director
Marcos Siega.
I made them laugh so hard that
Marcos was trying not to laugh, and as
soon I closed the door and left I heard
a huge laugh, Easton says proudly.
In The Underclassman Easton plays a
student at a private school who, along
with other rich kids, operates a stolen
car ring. Nick Cannon (Drumline) plays
a cop who poses as a student to try to
break up the gang.
Its not a huge part, but it did open
doors for Easton, and after he shot the
movie he stayed in L.A. thinking his
acting career was set. Think again. The
movie was put on hold two years
and there is no career. He returns
home to Vancouver, lands a few TV
roles, and then heads back to L.A. one
more time to try and make it.
Every time I go back to Los Angeles
my career comes to a screeching halt,
he says in his subdued voice. Four
months go by, Ive spent all the money
I have, Im broke-ass poor again and
when I auditioned for Final Destination 3
I didnt have enough money to take a
bus there. It was an hour and 45 minute
walk to my audition, it was pouring rain
and my pants were drenched all the way
through. When I was about a half-hour
away I called my mom, whos been the
biggest supporter of my career, and
said, Mom, its pouring rain, my pants
are drenched, Im not going to go in
there soaking wet.
She said, You can still go in there. I
said, Mom, these people come out of
BMWs and Mercedes and Im going to
be drenched from head to toe, I dont
want to go in.
She said, Just keep walking, believe
in yourself, and the sun will come out.
And 15 minutes later the sun came out
and my pants dried and I went in and I
got it. It was a pretty magical experience,
other than having to walk an hour and
45 minutes. IR

cant wait for...

An Unfinished Life (September)
Its been almost four years since director
Lasse Halstrm, who earned Best Director
Oscar nominations for both My Life as a
Dog and The Cider House Rules, released
his last movie, The Shipping News.
Aside from directing a 2002 DVD
collection of ABBA hits, we can only
presume hes spent most of that time
working on An Unfinished Life, which
comes out next month with Robert Redford,
Morgan Freeman and Jennifer Lopez in the
lead roles.
Based on the 2004 book by Mark Spragg
(1989s Gross Anatomy), its about Wyoming
cowboy Einar (Redford), whos still bitter
about the death of his son in a car crash a
decade before. He blames his daughter-inlaw (Lopez) and hasnt had anything to do
with her since. Then, one day, she shows up
at the farm on the run from an abusive
boyfriendand with the granddaughter
Einar never knew he had. Freeman plays
Einars old friend and hired hand.
The film was actually shot in the spring of
2003, right in the middle of the first
Bennifer romance. Apparently, Lopez flew
back and forth from the films location in

B.C.s interior (mostly Ashcroft and

Kamloops) to Vancouver where Ben Affleck
was shooting Paycheck. The circus surrounding their relationship and breakup may
have been one factor in the films delay.
Another interesting thing about the
projects timeline is that, even though the
movie was shot early in 2003, the novel
wasnt released until November 2004.
Spragg says the books outline and the
screenplay for the movie were written
simultaneously over a year of car trips he
took with his wife, Virginia. They molded
the characters and plot together and then
he went off and wrote the book and she
went off and wrote the script.

Elizabethtown (October) If you work in an office, a storereally anywhere that

makes the smallest dent in the economy, you always have that niggling worry: What if I
make a mistake that costs my boss millions of dollars?
In his first movie since 2001s Vanilla Sky,
director Cameron Crowe explores that terrifying
ground when a guy who works for a shoe company
(Orlando Bloom) makes a $972-million blunder.
Which way will his life go? Down seems to be the
answer when he gets a call from his sister telling
him that his dad just died, but there are bits of up,
too, when he connects with a charming stewardess
(Kirsten Dunst) on the flight home to Kentucky.

BRIEFLY...
OCTOBER:

Shopgirl Steve Martin stars opposite Claire Danes in this movie (based on his
own novella) about an older man who romances a young store clerk.

NOVEMBER:

The New World Colin Farrell stars as 17th-century explorer John Smith in director
Terence Malicks (Badlands) latest.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Evil Lord Voldemorts face is finally revealed

and, guess what, it belongs to Ralph Fiennes!

DECEMBER:

A Fresh Daisy
JESSICA SIMPSON breathes new life into 80s sex symbol
Daisy Duke for THE DUKES OF HAZZARD movie I BY EARL DITTMAN

ts barely noon on the Baton Rouge

set of The Dukes of Hazzard, but the
humidity on this blistering Louisiana
morning is so draining, practically
every crew member is worn, frazzled
and ready to pass out. Everyone, that is,
except for Jessica Simpson, who looks
gorgeous and refreshed in cut-offs and
a blue T-shirt as she pops out of a 50sstyle gas station temporarily standing in
for the films production office.
Making her movie debut as Daisy
Duke in this remake of the early 80s TV
show, the pop singer/reality TV star isnt
about to let a skin-searing heat wave
dampen her excitement or ambition.
I grew up in the South, so Im used
to weather like this, its like being at
home, says the Dallas-born blonde,
revealing her Texas twang. A lot of

people didnt know it, but Ive been

wanting to make a movie for a long
time. Ive just been waiting for the right
project and the perfect part for me to
play. I mean, it was important for me to
not go too far away from my persona
and what people already knew me as.
Played by Catherine Bach in the
original, Daisy Duke was known as
much for her cut-off jeans as she was for
her ability to get the Duke boys, Bo
(played by John Schneider in the original, and Seann William Scott in the
movie) and Luke (Tom Wopat then,
Johnny Knoxville now), out of trouble.
I was too young to have watched
The Dukes of Hazzard when it was first on
TV, but I have seen all the reruns, and I
can relate to them, says Simpson.
Also, Im obviously from the South, so

the accent sort of came naturally.

The 25-year-old admits she has a lot
to learn about acting but says her
experience making music videos and
her time spent surrounded by an army
of videocam operators for Newlyweds
the reality TV show about her marriage
to fellow pop star Nick Lachey
helped dissolve most of the nerves.
I dont even notice cameras anymore,
so thats one of the positive things, she
says. Theyll be in your face and you
dont even notice that they are there,
which is scary, but its been good for me
as an actor.
Although she plans to take acting
lessons in the future, this time out
Simpson came up with her own version
of Method acting.
I shoot a scene in two days, and I
dont even know what my lines are,
Simpson confesses. Im better at just
going into the hair and makeup trailer,
and while Im getting my hair and
makeup done, just memorizing my
lines right there. That way, I dont
rehearse them too much and it doesnt
sound like Im acting. Its more about

Daisy Duke (Jessica Simpson)

how I say it instead of thinking of when
and where to say my lines. It gets too
confusing and thats when I think it
starts to look contrived.
Although Simpson has filled concert
arenas and done TV guest spots, like
Kelsos girlfriend Annette on That 70s
Show, there was no denying she was a
novice when it came to making this
movie. Even some of her cast mates
were worried. Though he admits hes
no Laurence Olivier, Johnny Knoxville
(best known as host of MTVs gross-out
stunt show Jackass) wasnt sure Simpson
should tackle such a huge role her first
time out.
A lot of people who havent made a
lot of big movies, like myself, try to start
out slow, in small parts, just to test
the moviemaking waters, explains
Knoxville, whose rsum includes small
parts in Lords of Dogtown and Men in
Black 2. Jessica kind of knew that was
the general feeling, so she said she
wanted to screen test for everyone
on the picture and for herself. The test
was great, and there were no more
worries about what she could do.
The 35-year-old Knoxville recalls

shooting his first scene with Simpson.

When they said, Print, Jessica looked
up at me and goes, That was my first
take ever. My jaw hit the ground
because it sunk in at that moment that
this was her first film. Even though I
had been told a million times before, I
would never have believed it before
that time, because shes a natural.
In addition to the cut-offs, halter tops
and T-shirts, Simpson had to saunter
around in a very revealing bikini.
Before beginning an extreme exercise
regimen with a trainer, she concocted
her own weight-loss plan.
I ate my last piece of chocolate cake
when I got the call and ever since then
Ive tried to cut sugar out of my diet
except fruit. For the most part, I eat
healthy and work out for two hours,
every day. Im addicted to it now. I actually feel better, and I have so much more
energy and work is so much easier.
Knoxville admits that a script for
The Dukes of Hazzard has been circulating
around Hollywood for several years, but
everyone passed on it. It was like a
parody of one the shows, or a really
bad episode, says Knoxville. It needed

something, like maybe some humour

and jokes. To be polite, it wasnt very
good.
Then the writers of the small but
critically acclaimed 2001 comedy
Super Troopers, Jay Chandrasekhar and
his collective known as Broken Lizard,
were asked to whip the script into shape.
Chandrasekhar also agreed to direct the
film as long as he was allowed to be
involved in casting. Aside from Scott,
Simpson and Knoxville, country music
legend Willie Nelson (Electric Cowboy)
plays Uncle Jesse and Burt Reynolds is
the Duke boys arch-enemy Boss Hogg.
The story sees the Duke clan trying to
prevent corrupt Boss Hogg from
destroying the family farm, but like the
series, this film is really all about getting
into trouble, irritating authorities and
car chases in the General Lee, the
brothers 1969 carrot-orange Dodge
Charger.
As for Daisy Duke, Simpson claims
her character is more than just eye
candy; shes a real person, with real
feelings and a great sense of humour.
Not just a hillbilly bunny, Simpson
says, still without a drop of perspiration

I shoot a scene in two days, and I dont even

on her body, while everyone around

her is drenched in sweat. Daisy basically
gets everybody out of trouble. People
lean on Daisy to make things happen,
whether its because of her sexuality or
personality.
Simpson is planning to parlay that
brand of accessible sexuality into a new
line of jeans. She explains that, in the
film, Daisy Dukes cut-offs are Lucky
Jeans and her full-length jeans are True
Religion. But my mom and I just
signed a big merchandising deal where
were going to have a line of jeans
called Bridges. And Im pretty sure
were going to do a line of Daisy
Bridges, she says.
Whatever movie is next on Simpsons
agenda, shes hoping it will make
people laugh. She wants to do romantic
comedies, the kind the stuff that Meg
Ryan and Julia Roberts do, because I
love movies that move you and make
you cry, she says, wiping away fake
tears. Shes also up for a drama, but
nothing too gritty. I dont know if I
would be good playing some coked-up
drug addict. Ive never tried it, and that
would be hard to identify with. But
maybe one day, you never know.
Despite rumours to the contrary, she
wont do a film with her husband
anytime soon. After the Newlyweds show,
no more. Were separating everything in
our lives except our love for each other,
she says. Then she holds up five fingers
to indicate to a nervous assistant director
that shes wrapping up her chat.
When the film is done, its back to
what turned Jessica Simpson into a
household name making music.
I promise my fans I will be touring late
this summer, she says, jumping up
from her directors chair and heading
to the golf cart that will take her to the
Duke farm set.

When I finish Dukes, Im going into

the studio with Jimmy Jam and Terry
Lewis and Im working on a new
record. Ill also be doing some stuff on
the Dukes soundtrack, then Ill be going
out on tour this summer. Ill be doing
some fairs, and it will be like cross
promotions. Its never really been done
before with a movie, but Ill be doing
my hit songs, then Ill have songs where
I come out as Daisy Duke. Hey, it
sounds fun. And, more importantly, its
part of the business.
Thats very savvy for a 25-year-old
who, quite honestly, often comes
across as a dumb blonde. And one of
Simpsons biggest goals is to clear up
what she sees as the misconception that
has haunted her since the first season
of Newlyweds.
Some people think that Im this
really ditzy woman because of some of
the silly things I said on the show, she
says, making herself comfortable for
the short trip back to the set.
Thats okay with me, but Im not
that Anna Nicole Smith type. I definitely
have my stuff together. Im a very
determined person who works really
hard, and a lot of that gets lost in
the tuna and Chicken-of-the-Sea comments, she says, referring to a famous
episode of Newlyweds where she asked
Lachey whether tuna was a type of
chicken.
But I guess thats okay, too, because
things arent going too bad for this
little Texas girl, she continues. So, in
the scheme of things, like my girl Daisy
would say, Im doing fine.
Waving goodbye, Jessicas golf cart
heads off into the hot backwoods of
Baton Rouge.

Into the woods

Once upon a time MATT DAMON and HEATH LEDGER went to the Czech
Republic to shoot THE BROTHERS GRIMM. Here they discuss the joys and
difficulties of pulling off Terry Gilliams latest fantasy I BY EARL DITTMAN

n the 18 months since The Brothers

Grimm wrapped filming in the
Czech Republic, many Hollywood
fairy tales have been written
concerning the fate of director Terry
Gilliams supernatural comedy.
Gilliam, of course, is the filmmaker
behind such bizarre, absurd and
acclaimed films as Brazil, The Fisher King
and Twelve Monkeys, but to many hes still
best known as the lone, American expatriate of the legendary British comedy
group Monty Python.
Sadly, most Tinsel Town tales were
predicting a not-so-happy ending for
the film starring Matt Damon and
Heath Ledger as extremely loose
incarnations of the 19th-century German
siblings responsible for popularizing
ages-old tales like Cinderella, Hansel and
Gretel and Little Red Riding Hood.
But Gilliam wasnt about to let this
film meet the same fate as The Man
Who Killed Don Quixote, his indie period
piece starring Johnny Depp that was
forced to shut down mid-production
thanks to a slew of non-insurable Acts
of God including cast injuries and
freakish storms. The unbelievable
odyssey of trying to get Quixote made

was depicted in the 2002 documentary

Lost in La Mancha.
Despite having to conjure up new
actors (he cast Monica Bellucci as the
evil queen late in the game after Nicole
Kidman dropped out); battle ogres
(problems with the distributors); and
endure an epic journey (lengthy postproduction thanks to complicated
effects), Gilliam seems to have slain the
dragon and The Brothers Grimm should,
indeed, open this month.
Terry is one of the most determined
and talented men I have ever met and
had the honour to work with, so I was
never concerned the film would end up
sitting on a shelf somewhere, says Matt
Damon. The 34-year-old who portrays
brother Will Grimm is looking relaxed
in jeans and a T-shirt.
Of course there were some minor
problems here and there with our film,
but its like that with every movie, says
Damon. We were behind, but I didnt
care because I was going to work with
Terry.... All I could think of the entire
time we were making the film in Europe
was, Im in a movie that Terry Gilliam is
directing! How lucky could I get?
Before cameras even began to roll,

dark clouds loomed over the project

then a co-production between
Dimension Films and MGM.
During Miramax/Dimensions lessthan-amicable split from its parent
company, Disney, the powers-that-be
decided to push the movies shooting
schedule back several months, forcing
many crew and cast members to drop
out because of previous commitments.
(MGM, experiencing its own difficulties,
later dropped the project altogether.)
Even Heath Ledger, who plays Jake
Grimm, wasnt sure he could conform
to the new schedule. He was supposed
to report to the Australian Outback to
shoot Ned Kelly the controversial biopic about the Robin Hood-esque idol
from his native Australia during what
would then be the middle of The Brothers
Grimms shoot. Miraculously, each film
experienced additional production
changes, allowing Ledger to do both.
The day I found out I could do it,
Terry came up to me and said, Im glad
youre still aboard. But I knew youd be
with us, because you cant count on
anything when youre dealing with
Hollywood, says the 26-year-old actor.
But by this point, Gilliam was clearly
hurting. Coming off the heartbreak of
Don Quixote, he seemed ready to do
whatever it would take to get this film
made, even if that meant softening his
artistic vision. When I told Terry how
much I wanted to be in one of his
movies he gave me a hug and said,
Welcome to purgatory, kid. Im happy
to hear that because youre doing the
first Terry Gilliam fu--ing sell-out
movie, recalls Ledger.
They didnt like the idea of compromising, so Ledger and Damon set out to
change Gilliams mind. Basically, we
had to turn him around and convince
him that he wasnt doing a sell-out
movie, Ledger explains. Matt and I
told him that we were all going to be
passionate and that we were going to
work our asses off for him. He was
excited. We got him out of his Don
Quixote depression, but, honestly, it was
relatively easy because he loves making
movies. Hes a passionate, passionate creator and superexcited, and he generally
wants a movie to make money so that
he can make three movies that dont.
From that point on, it was all good.
Known for scrupulously researching
the characters he plays, especially the
ones based on real people, Damon

interview | MATT DAMON & HEATH LEDGER

interview | MATT DAMON & HEATH LEDGER

says he was told not to even bother
researching Will Grimm because
Gilliam didnt want to portray the actual
German writers.
And that was pretty cool for me, says
Damon. It gave us a chance to develop
our characters with Terry in different
ways, until we found what worked the
best for the brothers. We play them as
some really wild, crazy guys.
We are conmen going from town to
town trying to con the townspeople, but
in actuality the real brothers were
incredibly intelligent scholars, explains
Damon, who himself attended Harvard.
Realizing they can make money by
promising to rid villages of their evil
spirits, the Grimm brothers become
travelling exorcists. All is well until an
evil queen (Bellucci) is angered by their
supernatural charades and attacks them
with a little black magic of her own.
Its got a lot of fairy tale imagery in
it that the Grimm brothers wrote
about, says Damon. The visuals are
brilliant, and whats great is that its not
all CGI. Its so authentic and real.
Even though they werent playing the
real brothers, Ledger and Damon read
as many of their fairy tales as they could,
even spending nights cooped up in their
hotel rooms reading aloud to each other.
Historically, the real brothers wrote
such wonderful stories because they
wanted their heritage to seem so beautiful to everyone, even the French, who
were occupying their country. They were
basically telling their fellow German
countrymen to take pride in themselves
through these stories, says Ledger.
When they werent reading, Ledger,
Damon and the films crew spent many

Matt Damon and Lena Headey

of their weekends enjoying Pragues

nightlife. Let me tell you, Prague is
pretty cool, says Damon, who will be
spending more weekends in the historic
city early next year, filming the third
installment of the Bourne franchise
The Bourne Ultimatum.
We were shooting six-day weeks, so,
on Saturday nights, the whole crew
would go to these bars, clubs or discos,
Damon continues. It was just a little
strange for me because Im not much of
a club-goer. So everybody was dancing to
electronica music and with glow sticks in
their hands. One night, I remember
joking to Heath, What is going on here,
am I in Hollywood or Prague?
Currently filming Martin Scorseses
cop drama The Departed with Leonardo
DiCaprio and Jack Nicholson in his
native Beantown, Damon is happy to be
back on familiar ground. Ive basically
spent the past four years in Europe
making all the films Ive been in, so it
feels great to be filming a movie at
home in Boston, admits Damon,
whose next film, the international spy
thriller Syriana with George Clooney,
opens in September.
Although he has yet to officially
confirm the story, it looks like Ledgers
next role has nothing to do with movies.
Apparently, he and his Brokeback
Mountain co-star Michelle Williams (of
Dawsons Creek fame) are expecting a
baby this fall. Brokeback Mountain, due
out at the beginning of December, is
based on Pulitzer Prize-winning author
E. Annie Proulxs story of two gay rodeo
cowboys (Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal)
who have a secret affair.
I think Brokeback Mountain is an
important love story for this generation,
says Ledger. No one is breaking new
ground with love stories. They just keep
repeating familiar themes. Im excited
about the prospect of maybe smashing
some taboos with this film, but it still
scares the hell out of me.
And after that? Well, he might team up
with Gilliam one more time to finally get
that other cursed movie back on track.
We had an absolute ball doing Brothers
Grimm with Terry, says Ledger, and I
think it did its job of getting him out of
his funk over Don Quixote, which Ive
volunteered to do with him for nothing
because hes so fun to work with.

GRIMM
REALITY

The real Brothers Grimm were aptly

named since the folk stories they
collected were often violent, coarse, and
some even featured anti-Semitism and
sexual abuse. Over time the stories
became softer, less scary, and a certain
Walt Disney adapted a handful, turning
them into sweet childrens fare.
However, there have been a few
movies that set out to capture the true
essence of the Grimm brothers work.
Check them out, but be prepared for
some nastiness.

Snow White: A Tale of Terror

(1997): Sigourney Weaver stars as an

evil stepmother whose intense hatred
of her stepdaughter Lilli (Monica
Keena) sends the teenage girl into the
woods where she meets some very
grown-up miners. Dark, grim and
boasting a stellar performance from
Weaver, the film never made it into
theatres and was released as a TV
miniseries instead.

Freeway (1996): The Little Red

Riding Hood fable is turned into an

over-the-top thriller starring Reese
Witherspoon as a 15-year-old sexual
abuse survivor who doesnt want to go
into foster care, so she decides to
hitchhike to the home of the grandmother shes never met. Picked up by
a serial rapist named Bob Wolverton
(Kiefer Sutherland), the feisty Vanessa
has to fight for her life.

Freeway II: Confessions of a

Trickbaby (1999). The second

Freeway film from director Matthew

Bright riffs on the Hansel and Gretel
tale. Armed robber White Girl (Natasha
Lyonne) and lesbian mass-murderer
Cyclona (Maria Celedonia) wind up in
Mexico in the home of a nun, Sister
Gomez (Vincent Gallo, giving a
stunningly surreal performance), who
works with children and wants to
fatten up the bulimic White Girl before
doing away with them both. IR

MARK WAHLBERG talks about the transforming
power of fatherhood, thoughts of retirement and
heading back to the hood for his new movie
FOUR BROTHERS I BY EARL DITTMAN

Four Brothers eldest son Mark Wahlberg

Aside from missing Ella, did you enjoy filming in Toronto?

Yeah, I loved it. Its a great city. I just wish I could have spent
more time on the actual streets of Toronto. Believe me,
famous 34 | august 2005

ark Wahlberg is looking refined and professional

today. Hes wearing black Armani jeans with a fitted,
matching T-shirt and is sitting on a big sofa in a
swanky Beverly Hills hotel suite. But never mind looks, hes
charming and gracious. Quite honestly, its tough to believe
that 12 years ago, this articulate actor/producer was the
rapping, trouser-dropping bad boy Marky Mark.
Now 34, and the proud father of two-year-old Ella Rae
(mom is model Rhea Durham), Wahlberg looks back on his
transformation over the past decade and jokes, How in the
hell did I do that?
Last year saw the debut of Entourage, the HBO series he
co-produces about a hot young actor who surrounds himself
with childhood friends to keep himself real. It airs on The Movie
Network in Canada. And, yes, its no coincidence that the
premise bears similarities to Wahlbergs life in Hollywood.
This month hell star in director John Singletons latest
hood-justice flick, Four Brothers although, Wahlberg
might argue with the term stars in. Even though he is, by
far, the biggest name appearing in the film, he insists its an
ensemble piece, adding, I dont have to be the top dog in
every movie I do.
Wahlberg who himself grew up in a tough part of
Dorchester, Massachusetts plays Bobby, the eldest of the
films four adopted brothers who return home to the rough
streets of Detroit to avenge their adoptive mothers murder.
OutKast singer Andr Benjamin (a.k.a. Andr 3000), Tyrese
Gibson (2 Fast 2 Furious) and Garrett Hedlund (Friday Night
Lights) play the other three siblings. Youll notice that two of
the four are white, while the other two are black, giving
Singleton (Boyz n the Hood, Shaft) the chance to explore the
perception and reality of what truly makes a family.
Shot mostly in Hamilton, Ontario, and on a Toronto
soundstage, Wahlberg once again had to leave Rhea and Ella
behind in Los Angeles to bring home the bacon.
When you travel to other countries to make a movie or
even across the United States, you start to get homesick,
especially when you have children, he admits. I start filming
the sequel to The Italian Job pretty soon, its called The Brazilian
Job, so I think that means Ella will be spending some time in
Rio. Either that or Ill have a couple thousand frequent
flyer miles.

two-thirds of Four Brothers was shot on a soundstage, so I didnt

get to hang out around Toronto as much as I would have
liked to. Ive been to Toronto several times, both making
movies and going to the festival. The city is so clean and the
people are so friendly. I think Toronto could teach American
cities a thing or two about looking and acting your best.

Four Brothers is the first street movie youve done in ages. Did you
stop doing that kind of movie on purpose?
Well, Im always trying to do something that isnt expected,
and thats different from the norm. But the first role I was
really recognized for was Basketball Diaries, then Fear, and
both those characters were extremely dangerous and
violent, so I was immediately pigeonholed as that guy.
Luckily, we found Boogie Nights [in which he played a porn
star], which showed a very sweet and vulnerable character,
even though he was in a crazy world. After that, I became
that guy. [Laughs.] But I dont think Bobby, from
Four Brothers, is much like any role Ive done before. Yeah, its
set on the streets, but thats about its only relationship to Fear
and Basketball Diaries.
So what is the story behind Four Brothers?
Even though the brothers dont have the same mothers or
fathers, they still feel like they share the same blood. And
when their [adoptive] mother is murdered, its up to them to
right all the wrongs, because they are brothers. So I guess you
could say the main message is that being a family is the most
important thing in life.
That has new resonance for you, I guess.
Yeah, very much so. Having a kid can be scary. Fatherhood
definitely changes you.
How so?
In every way possible. I wouldnt even know where to begin.
It puts it all into perspective. The enormity of the responsibility is just overwhelming at times, ya know? Youre holding
that little girl, and if you put her down and leave her there
shes gonna die. Youve gotta take care of your child every
second of the day. Luckily, her mother is a superhero,
because I dont know if I could do it on my own. I dont know
how my mother raised nine kids. But I feel this enormous
responsibility to go out and provide, even though Im pretty
well off. Im like, I gotta make sure that her futures secure.
And what about her kids kids? I immediately jumped into
work mode.

forever. I hope to just focus most of my attention on work for

the next couple of years and then focus on family.

Youre thinking about retiring already?

Yeah. But, I mean, I wouldnt say that Im not coming back.
Would you keep producing shows like Entourage?
Oh, yeah. We have Entourage and a couple of other shows in
the works. So Im really just trying, for now, to help my
friends kind of do their thing. But Ive been doing it for a
long time. And, honestly, I do have other interests. Theres
golf, my family, my daughter. And those are all very, very
important to me.
How did Entourage come about?
Well, we had a great idea. Then after a friend at HBO had
heard about it, we knew Well, heres a place where we can do
what we want to do and not really have to compromise, [we
can] show what really goes on in that world. They wanted nothing more than to allow us the freedom to do exactly that. The
only thing that initially we wanted that we didnt get was that we
wanted a guy more like myself as the star.rather than a
Leonardo [DiCaprio] type. We wanted more of a physical guy.
You mean a more muscular, beefy guy?
Beefy, but also might crack you in the head. My crew, if
someone messed up our lunch, well, maybe wed get into a
fight about it, but wed be friends right after. But HBO didnt
think that someone hitting someone else in the back with a
stick because of a call in a basketball game would be appealing
to watch or that most people would be able to understand
that. So we were like, Okay, I guess that youre right.
And we certainly wanted the appeal to be as broad as
possible.

I have so much real-life

experience that I can tap into,
says Wahlberg

And did that work mode exclude certain roles, now that youre a dad?
I certainly would have a hard time accepting a role in a film
like Boogie Nights now that I have a daughter. I mean, I know
Im going to have to explain it to her one day, and thats
going to be fun [laughs]. But I was a different person then.
Are you considering marriage?
Yeah, and soon, hopefully.
You havent been making as many movies as when you first started out.
Do you worry that taking all this time off will hurt your career?
Nah, because Ive been doing this for too long to care
anymore. I mean, acting is not something that Im going to do

Are you into politics?

Well, yes, but my politics are about kids
who grew up in places like myself. I am
concerned with the environment, but
Im a lot more concerned about the
environment in the inner city that
doesnt have any trees or marshes to
save. I was never privy to those things. I
never saw a golf course until I went to
California.
You had a rough childhood that was vastly
different from that of most of your peers.
Has that helped or hindered you?
Its certainly helped me in many ways
because I have so much real-life experience that I can tap into. Indirectly, Ive
been acting my entire life, even if I was
just talking my way out of trouble.
Acting is really just about convincing
somebody, and Ive always been trying
to sell somebody something. In that
sense, Ive been doing it all along.

When did you know you wanted to act?

After meeting Penny Marshall and
Danny DeVito for the movie Renaissance
Man [Wahlbergs first big-screen role,
he played an army recruit]. Because of
my music career, the acting and movie
opportunities that presented themselves to me were all bad, where the one
movie that you could make was like the
Vanilla Ice movie. And I had no interest
in that. I was already playing the white
rapper. And I had no interest in being
exploited, I had already been through
that with the underwear thing. When I
met Penny Marshall I felt like here was
a woman that I could completely identify with and relate to on every level,
and she was in the movie business.
Were you aware of the perils of stardom?
Oh, yeah, definitely. I think that the
one thing that Ive been blessed with is
the ability to learn from other peoples
mistakes. I mean, I still made a lot myself
and I continue to, but Im very observant in that way and I like to avoid as
many disastrous moves as possible.

CABIN PRESSURE
Canadian RACHEL MCADAMS makes a sharp turn from comedic
straight girl in Wedding Crashers to thriller heroine in Wes Cravens
airplane fright film RED EYE I BY BOB STRAUSS

his is the summer of Rachel

McAdams.
To get their name in a sentence
like that, most young actors would
commit a felony.
But the unassuming, chameleon-like
Ontarian seems like shes just a little
wary of taking the hype that comes with
two major movie releases too seriously.
Its kind of strange to believe any
projection outside of yourself, says
McAdams, who starred in last months
raucous comedy Wedding Crashers, leads
this months airborne thriller Red Eye,
and recently took home an armload of
MTV Movie Awards for her breakthrough work in last years The Notebook
and Mean Girls. Its a little dangerous
to see yourself the way other people do.
I dont mean to sound ungrateful.
Its really lovely that people are thinking
that way. And its important, obviously,
in terms of my career and getting other
jobs that people think Im competent,
adds the actor, her wide smile framing
self-deprecating laughter. So I appreciate that very much. But for my own
sanity, if I put all my eggs in one basket,
hoping that I will get to work for the
rest of my lifethats so rare, and if it

doesnt happen Ill be incredibly disappointed. So I guess I just try to enjoy it

now. You just try to do things that speak
to you, and hopefully itll all work out. I
have faith in the universe, I have faith
that things will be okay.
While faith is nice, McAdams may not
need it. According to Wedding Crashers
director David Dobkin who, after
auditioning hundreds of other actors
for the role cast her as the one sensible
person in his otherwise nutso comedy
McAdams has the talent to take any
path she chooses.
Rachel McAdams is the real deal,
Dobkin says. This girls gonna be huge.
And its her choice. Shes gonna be
Rachel McAdams, her own original
thing, but she can be Sigourney Weaver
if she wants and she can be Julia Roberts
if she wants. This girl can do both.
Rob Schneider, too. Her first major
film, The Hot Chick, saw McAdams playing
a nasty snob whos forced to live in
Schneiders body after being cursed.
McAdams played a similar character in
Mean Girls, but then started to showcase
her impressive range as The Notebooks
passionate 40s debutante, Wedding
Crashers spunky straight-woman and

Air rage: Red Eyes baddie

Cillian Murphy and Rachel McAdams

now in Red Eye as a workaholic hotel

manager coerced into aiding an assassination on an airplane.
And shes done every one with different coloured hair, to boot.
You can see the roots, McAdams
cheerfully demonstrates by pulling
back her dark brown curls. Shes wearing
a short, patterned jacket with floral
embroidery on the sleeves, a black
blouse and tight jeans over her thin
frame. There they are! Kinda dark.
McAdams admits that her playfulness
masks jitters about a crucial period in
her career.
Its nerve-wracking because I realize
that theyre coming on the heels of
Mean Girls and The Notebook, which are
going to be special films in my life, I
feel, she says of this summers releases.
They wont all be that way. But its nice
to have the opposition. I like that I did a
comedy, and then a serious thriller.
Ever the student she has a BFA in
theatre from Torontos York University
McAdams was delighted to get some
lessons in film fright from Red Eye director
Wes Craven, the man behind the
Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream movies.
I learned an entirely new skill about
how filmmaking and suspense are
related, she says, the way that you use a
camera and the way that you use your
vessel to terrorize an audience. That was
interesting. Ive never, ever touched that
stuff before.
Red Eye starts out looking like it might
turn into a sweet romantic-comedy.
Lisas (McAdams) flight to Miami is
delayed, but while waiting she meets
cute fellow passenger Jackson (Batman
Begins villain Cillian Murphy). When
they finally board, guess what, their
seats are right next to each other. But
Lisa soon finds out that its no coincidence in fact, Jackson set the whole
thing up. He needs her to help him
kill another passenger, the Deputy
Secretary of Homeland Security, and if
she doesnt comply hell kill her father.
To prove how serious he is, Jackson
presents Lisa with her dads wallet,
stolen from his desk at work.
McAdams says she likes the physicality
of suspense movies. I loved the action
sequences, running through an airport
in high heels and all that stuff. That was
really fun. And there was the opposition
of it being a two-hander [a theatre
term for a play with two main roles]
and being in this really confined space,

having to look into this very scary persons eyes all day and communicate the
fact that youre, yknow, scared sh-tless.
In Wedding Crashers, as an unhappily
engaged woman who falls in love with
Owen Wilsons sweet but completely
bogus wedding guest, McAdams had to
access a different set of skills.
I guess your job as an actor is to relate
to every character and find something
inside of yourself that understands what
their plight is, she explains. But then,
also, to find something about them that
you didnt know before.
Like, Ive never been with a jerk for
a long period of time [laughs]. Im
pretty tough that way, Im pretty picky.
And I dont think Ive ever been duped.
Except, perhaps, by herself, when she
thought she could star in musicals. A
competitive figure skater in her youth,
McAdams drive to perform was further
engaged when she enrolled in a London,
Ont., theatre camp one summer.
I attended when I was about 12, she
recalls. Thats where I got bit, where I
started doing Shakespeare. Actually,
they had these categories at the camp,
and I started doing Disney musicals. I
wanted to be on Star Search; I wanted to
be a Broadway star. But there were all
these eight-year-old kids around me in
the Disney group who were singing and
dancing, they were like the next Annies.
I just cried every day. It was so awful
because I cant sing, I cant dance. I
dont know what I was thinking.
So a director came up to me and
said, Maybe youd be happier in the
Shakespeare group. I said, I cant do
Shakespeare. She said, Well, you cant
sing and dance! So I went and did
some Shakespeare and it was incredible.
Ironically, McAdams first filmed
appearance was on a Disney television
series, The Famous Jett Jackson.
Diehard fans of Canadian cinema may
have caught her in the one CanCon pic
she did before hitting it big in the U.S.,
2002 s Perfect Pie. She earned a Genie
nomination for her supporting role as
the teen version of Wendy Crewsons
small-town country wife.
Despite all of her recent success in
the States, McAdams still calls Toronto
home. Asked if that was a particularly
down-to-earth, Canadian thing to do,
the actress wasnt sure.
I dont know if its Canadian specifically, she says. But its good to distance
yourself from the place where you

work. If we all lived at work all the time

we would be insane. So its good to go
home and just step back.
Her next film is The Family Stone, due
out in November, and starring Luke
Wilson as a guy whose family doesnt like
his girlfriend. McAdams plays one of his
sisters. After that, who knows? Now in
her mid-20s, McAdams refuses to rule
out playing yet another teenager.
I would love to go back to high
school, she chirps. Its always fun to
go back. Especially when youre 26; it
makes you feel young again. Yeah, I
would love to keep the age range
open-ended as long as possible.
With uniform praise coming from
collaborators, critics and fans alike, all
possibilities appear open to Rachel
McAdams. She might pretend to be
more concerned than excited about it
all, but she also clearly appreciates that
things are going exactly the way she likes.
I dont want to disappoint, she says
in response to the rising chorus of
accolades. Theres a lot of pressure
there. But its very, very flattering.
I guess you try to go into movies not
thinking how people are going to react
to them. I really hope everyone enjoys
everything I make, but you just have to
go into it kind of selfishly, like this does
something for me personally and,
hopefully, it translates.

FLIGHT SIMULATOR
Heres a game: After you see Red Eye, go
to airhollywood.com and try to pick out
the plane interior used in the film.
Claiming to be the first and largest
aviation-themed film studio, Air Hollywood
was founded in May 2001 by Talaat
Captan, producer of a bunch of movies
youve never heard of. It was while working on the 1998 Kiefer Sutherland thriller
Ground Control (Kiefer plays an air traffic
controller who has to save the day when a
computer program goes haywire) that
Captan got so angry with cost and time
overruns that he came up with an idea
recreate airport and plane interiors and
rent them out to film and TV productions.
Four months later, September 11th
made it nearly impossible to film in real
airports for security reasons.
On his official site (wescraven.com),
director Wes Craven explains why using
a pre-fab cabin was so much easier than
the real thing: It had walls that would
come off for camera angles impossible
on a real plane, and had a huge crane
rail running its full length, hidden above
the overhead storage bins, but available
for several key long tracking shots where
the camera soars over the heads of the
passengers to find Rachel in the middle
of some new hell she has to deal with.
It was cramped, but all you had to do
was step outside and you were on a nice
cozy sound stage. MW

the
contradictions
of LUXE BOHO

Earthy and tired or rich and fabulous,

youre both at once if you subscribe to
Sienna Millers fashion paradigm

I BY LIZA HERZ

ong before the Olsen twins prowled

the streets of lower Manhattan
with mismatched outfits, expensive
handbags and birds nest coifs, rich
boho chicks led far edgier lives.
American oil heir John Paul Getty Jr.
and his tragic, fashion-icon wife Talitha
threw all-night, drug-fuelled soirees for
rock stars at their Marrakesh palace in
the 60s. Talithas look straight hair,
embellished caftan was her eras signature for boho aristocrat, never mind
that she ended up dead in her swimming
pool, victim of a drug overdose.
As a fashion statement (minus the
decadence and contraband), bohemian
chic remains a cant-miss look. An
artfully careless blend of rock-star
extravagance and jeans plucked from
the laundry hamper, luxe boho is all
about juxtaposing pricey and humble
garments then wearing them with a my
trust fund is limitless panache. Its also
a look that can bridge the seasons, taking
you from summer (perhaps a printed
chiffon top?) to fall just layer on a fur
vest or a super-long knit scarf.

Because the boho look

demands long hair, a rich
conditioner is essential.

Think ease. And not the kind of ease

where everything in your wardrobe is
black. A true boho chick would sooner
wear coveralls to a cocktail party than
be seen in a tasteful Jil Sander pantsuit.
Boho Girls sense of ease says, These
items dont match. My personality
makes them match.
Actress Sienna Miller is as famous for
her unique style as she is for being
Jude Laws fiance. Instinctively, Miller
knows how to work the essential boho
dichotomy which is to say she can
wriggle into something cheap but wear
it with something that costs more than
your car. Rather than making her look
like shes wandered out of a country
music video, her shredded-denim-andcowboy-boots look (with the latest It Bag
slung over her shoulder) has instead
ignited a trend.
Fragrance is also important to the
Boho girl. No clean scents for her,
rather the enveloping warmth of earthy
notes patchouli, vetiver, sandalwood.
And this is no hippie strategy for masking
the effects of sporadic bathing. Our
boho child may be dreamy
but shes always scrupulous
about hygiene.
After all, no one wants
to risk being turned away
from the velvet rope at a
nightclub.
