WELCOME
INVOCATION
INTRODUCTION
Family is one of the greatest gifts God gives in creation. Jesus saying on
divorce is another of his rejections of human legislation in favor of the
original intent of Gods law, that spouses should love and help one another
throughout life. Jesus rebuke of the disciples who are fending off the
children should challenge us as well. What does it mean to receive the
kingdom of God as a child does?
CHILDREN are always welcome to our Worship Service. Rainbow bags
and a cry room are available. A staffed nursery is also available if needed.
An usher will gladly provide you with assistance.
As a worship courtesy, we ask that you please turn off or set to vibrate
all cellular telephones and pagers during the worship service.
We ask that all present today please fill out the Attendance and Communion
registration card found in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate so
that we may record your presence with us.
PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE PEW
Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow
love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where
there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness,
light; where there is sadness, joy. Grant that we may not so much seek to be
consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to
love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are
pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.
In the name of the Father, and of the (+) Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
CONFESSION AND ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS
Brothers and sisters, if we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves,
and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God who is faithful and
just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.
Gracious God,
have mercy on us. We confess that we have turned from you and given
ourselves into the power of sin. We are truly sorry and humbly repent.
In your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things
we have done and things we have failed to do. Turn us again to you,
and uphold us by your Spirit, so that we may live and serve you in
newness of life through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen.
God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and
made us alive together with Christ. In the name of Jesus Christ, your sins
are forgiven. By grace you have been saved, through faith. Almighty God
strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that your life may
reflect the love of Christ.
Amen.
GATHERING SONG:
GREETING
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of
the Holy Spirit be with you all!
And also with you!
KYRIE
(ELW 157)
to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called
every living creature, that was its name. 20The man gave names to all cattle,
and to the birds of the air, and to every animal of the field; but for the man
there was not found a helper as his partner. 21So the LORD God caused a
deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then he took one of his ribs
and closed up its place with flesh. 22And the rib that the LORD God had
taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man.
23
Then the man said,
This at last is bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
this one shall be called Woman,
for out of Man this one was taken.
24
Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and clings to his wife,
and they become one flesh.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
PSALM 8
Refrain:
Tone:
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Sovereign God, you have created us to live in loving community with one
another. Form us for life that is faithful and steadfast, and teach us to trust
like little children, that we may reflect the image of your Son, Jesus Christ,
our Savior and Lord.
Amen.
Please be seated.
A MESSAGE FOR OUR CHILDREN
FIRST READING: Genesis 2:18-24
18
The LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will
make him a helper as his partner. 19So out of the ground the LORD God
formed every animal of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them
You have made them rule over the works | of your hands;
you have put all things un- | der their feet:
7
all | flocks and cattle,
even the wild beasts | of the field,
8
the birds of the air, the fish | of the sea,
and whatever passes along the paths | of the sea.
9
O | LORD our Lord,
how majestic is your name in | all the earth! R
SECOND READING:
Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the
prophets, 2but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he
appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds. 3He
is the reflection of Gods glory and the exact imprint of Gods very being,
and he sustains all things by his powerful word. When he had made
purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
4
having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is
more excellent than theirs.
VERSE:
GOSPEL
Now God did not subject the coming world, about which we are
speaking, to angels. 6But someone has testified somewhere,
What are human beings that you are mindful of them,
or mortals, that you care for them?
7You have made them for a little while lower than the angels;
you have crowned them with glory and honor,
8subjecting all things under their feet.
Now in subjecting all things to them, God left nothing outside their control.
As it is, we do not yet see everything in subjection to them,9but we do see
Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, now crowned
with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace
of God he might taste death for everyone.
10It was fitting that God, for whom and through whom all things exist, in
bringing many children to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation
perfect through sufferings. 11For the one who sanctifies and those who are
sanctified all have one Father. For this reason Jesus is not ashamed to call
them brothers and sisters, 12saying,
I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters,
in the midst of the congregation I will praise you.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Some Pharisees came, and to test him they asked, Is it lawful for a man to
divorce his wife? 3 He answered them, What did Moses command
you? 4 They said, Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of dismissal
and to divorce her. 5 But Jesus said to them, Because of your hardness of
heart he wrote this commandment for you. 6 But from the beginning of
creation, God made them male and female. 7 For this reason a man shall
leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, [b] 8 and the two shall
become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 Therefore
what God has joined together, let no one separate.
10
Then in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. 11 He
said to them, Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits
adultery against her; 12 and if she divorces her husband and marries another,
she commits adultery.
13
People were bringing little children to him in order that he might
touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. 14 But when Jesus saw
this, he was indignant and said to them, Let the little children come to me;
do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God
belongs. 15 Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God
as a little child will never enter it. 16 And he took them up in his arms, laid
his hands on them, and blessed them.
PEACE
Please rise and greet one another in the peace of the risen Christ.

DIALOGUE
PREFACE
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY Holy, Holy, Holy (ELW 190a)
EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory.
In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the
sick and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the
cross, opened his arms to all.
In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave
thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my
body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to
drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and
for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.
Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension,
we await his coming in glory. Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O
Lord, and unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food, the body and
blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord; to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit,
be all honor and glory, now and forever.
Amen.
LORD'S PRAYER
Risen Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who
trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.
INVITATION TO COMMUNION
All who desire to leave their old lives behind and live in Christ, come to the
table!
All baptized people are welcome to the table to receive Christs body and
blood. If you have not been baptized, you are also welcome to the table as
Gods guest; we are honored by your presence. We recognize the Body of
Christ as the community of the baptized, so if you would like to become
part of the Body of Christ, we encourage you to seek baptism. If you cant
or dont wish to receive today, we encourage you to hold your hands over
your chest for a blessing as you come forward.
COMMUNION
The body of Christ, given for you.
The blood of Christ, shed for you.
Amen.
LAMB OF GOD O Christ, Lamb of God (ELW 196)
Almighty God, you gave your Son Jesus Christ both as a sacrifice for sin
and a model of godly life. Move us by your Holy Spirit to receive him
always with thanksgiving and conform our lives to his; through the same
Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Francis of Assisi
Sunday, October 04, 2015
Born into the family of a wealthy merchant, Francis gave up his inheritance
to serve poor people. He formed the Order of Friars Minor (called
Franciscans), who took on poverty and the task of preaching "using words
if necessary." Francis had a spirit of gratitude for all of God's creation.
SENDING OF COMMUNION
Gracious God, loving all your family with a mothers tender care: As you
sent the angel to feed Elijah with heavenly bread, assist those who set forth
to share your word and sacrament with those who are sick, homebound, and
imprisoned. In your love and care, nourish and strengthen those who will
receive this sacrament, and give us all the comfort of your abiding presence
through the body and blood of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.
BLESSING
Almighty God, Father, +Son, and Holy Spirit bless you and keep you, now
and forever.
Amen.

DISMISSAL
Go in peace. Love as God has loved you.
Thanks be to God.
Theodor Fliedner
Sunday, October 04, 2015
Fliedner helped to bring about a revival of the ministry of deaconesses
among Lutherans. He was influenced in this by Moravian deaconesses he
had met. The motherhouse he founded in Kaiserswerth, Germany, inspired
many around the world to take up this ministry.
William Tyndale
Tuesday, October 06, 2015
Tyndale was ordained a priest in England, and wished to translate the Bible
into English. He was opposed in this by King Henry VIII, causing him to
flee to Germany. He completed the New Testament in 1525, but before he
could finish the Old Testament, he was tried for heresy and burned at the
stake.
Henry M. Muhlenberg
Wednesday, October 07, 2015
Divided Lutherans in America asked leaders in Europe to send someone
who could take charge and unite their work. Muhlenberg was sent, and was
effective in organizing the American Lutherans. Among other
accomplishments, his liturgical principles became the basis for the
Common Service of 1888.
The flowers on the altar are given to the glory of God and
in honor of Trinity Lutheran Church, Council, Pastor
Peterson, Mary Reed-Farris, Administrative Assistant, Lori
Large, Custodian and Dr. Tom Wells, Director of Music.
