INTRODUCTION
Todays gospel starts with disciples obsessing over whos number one,
which leads Jesus to say something about God's take on importance and
power. Here Jesus makes it explicit that the reversal of values in Gods
community is a direct challenge to the values of the dominant culture,
where wielding power over others is what makes you great. When we pray
your kingdom come we are praying for an end to tyranny and
oppression. We pray this gathered around the cross, a sign of great shame
transformed to be the sign of great honor and service.
CHILDREN are always welcome to our Worship Service. Rainbow bags
and a cry room are available. A staffed nursery is also available if needed.
An usher will gladly provide you with assistance.
As a worship courtesy, we ask that you please turn off or set to vibrate
all cellular telephones and pagers during the worship service.
We ask that all present today please fill out the Attendance and Communion
registration card found in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate so
that we may record your presence with us.
PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE PEW
Almighty and eternal God, so draw our hearts to you, so guide our minds,
so fill our imaginations, so control our wills, that we may be wholly yours,
utterly dedicated to you; and then use us, we pray, as you will, but always
to your glory and the welfare of your people, through our Lord and Savior,
Jesus Christ. Amen.
GREETING
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of
the Holy Spirit be with you all!
And also with you!

Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things
pertaining to God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2He
is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is
subject to weakness; 3and because of this he must offer sacrifice for his own
sins as well as for those of the people. 4And one does not presume to take
this honor, but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was.
5So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was
appointed by the one who said to him,
You are my Son,
him, Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your
glory. 38But Jesus said to them, You do not know what you are asking.
Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism
that I am baptized with? 39They replied, We are able. Then Jesus said to
them, The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which
I am baptized, you will be baptized;40but to sit at my right hand or at my
left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.
41When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and
John. 42So Jesus called them and said to them, You know that among the
Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and
their great ones are tyrants over them. 43But it is not so among you; but
whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, 44and
whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. 45For the Son of
Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for
many.
VERSE:
GOSPEL
I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived
by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at
the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and
the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of
saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life
everlasting. Amen.

James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to
him, Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you. 36And he
said to them, What is it you want me to do for you? 37And they said to
PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION
Made alive with God in Christ, we pray for the church, those in need, and
all of Gods creation.
Please sit or kneel as you are able.
Each petition ends with:
Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.
Let us pray. O God, ruler of heaven and earth, all that we have and all that
we are come through you. We offer back in thanksgiving a portion of what
you have given us: our time, our work, and our wealth. With them we
dedicate our lives to the care and redemption of all that you have made,
through Jesus Christ, who gave himself for the salvation of the world.
Amen.
DIALOGUE
Gather these concerns and all who are in need into your abundant care, O
God, remembering your promise of mercy, through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
PEACE
The peace of Christ be with you always.
And also with you.

OFFERING PRAYER
EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory.
In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the
sick and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the
cross, opened his arms to all. In the night in which he was betrayed, our
Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his
disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to
drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and
for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.
Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension, we await
his coming in glory. Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord,
and unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food, the body and blood
of Jesus Christ, our Lord; to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit,
be all honor and glory, now and forever.
Amen.
LORD'S PRAYER
Risen Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who
trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.
INVITATION TO COMMUNION
All who desire to leave their old lives behind and live in Christ, come to the
table!
COMMUNION
The body of Christ, given for you.
The blood of Christ, shed for you.
Amen.
All baptized people are welcome to the table to receive Christs body and
blood. If you have not been baptized, you are also welcome to the table as
Gods guest; we are honored by your presence. We recognize the Body of
Christ as the community of the baptized, so if you would like to become
part of the Body of Christ, we encourage you to seek baptism. If you cant
or dont wish to receive today, we encourage you to hold your hands over
your chest for a blessing as you come forward.
BLESSING
Almighty God, Father, +Son, and Holy Spirit bless you and keep you, now
and forever.
Amen.
