EXAM QUESTIONS 1

Pregunta 1
Anne Bradstreet in her poems The Author to her Book and To my
Dear and Loving Husband conforms to the gender rhetorical patterns
appropriate for a woman writer of her time. Which were these? Please,
answer this question addressing the above mentioned poems.
For a woman writer of her time, there are several patterns such as she was
placed in a second position within her family, her husband was always superior
to her and she always told about a domestic atmosphere, not about
revolutionary themes.
In "The Author to her Book", she is saying that the book comes from a feeble
brain which perhaps is not national. She is placing herself as the mother, who
was supposed in that century to be humble and to be in a second position
towards the father. There were many prejudices against women's intellectual
capacities at that time. She is aware of the gender condition and follows readers'
expectations. She is exposing herself to public judgements; she only shows a
position of humility.
The poem comes from the domestic atmosphere, which is the right place for
women. This is another piece of evidence that she is aware of the gender
position and that she is following social and readers' expectations.
In "To my Dear and Loving Husband", she tells that women payed respect to
men, she stayed at home taking care children or cooking. They did not study
because it is thought that their brain were inferior and not prepared for study.
However, the fact that her husband was travelling for big part of the year and
she was alone, she had to take the decisions and that was unusual. This poem
has connotations of women's inferiority but also his daily love and how happy
she is with her husband because she has found the equality.

Pregunta 2
1) What was the purpose of John Smiths travel account The Generall
Historie of Virginia, New England and the Summer Isles (1624) What
Strategies did he use to achieve his purpose?
He wrote "The Generall Historie of Virginia" because we wants people go there to
colonize the New World. His strategy was that he had to speak about Indians as if
they were not as savage as they were.
He wants the colonization, he wants to establish a relationship with Indians, he
wants to learn the language, the method of cultivation, their cultures, their ideas
and explore the surroundings. He put emphasis in the private property, middle
class settlers were closer to Smith's ideal of colonial settlement because the New
England colonials were hard working men.

Pregunta 3
1) Melodrama came into fashion in the first half of the XIX century in
the United States. What are its main characteristics?
Melodrama was the most popular theatrical form of the XIX century. This
dramatic and musical format initiated in the XVIII century. In the XIX century it
lost the musical component, but kept a stereotyped characterization that
required severe overacting. Violence, coincidence, twisted plots and endings that
revealed the victory of virtue over corruption, good over evil were also common
elements in the melodrama.
Most characters are one-dimensional, their actions governed primarly by plot
requirements. Potentially dire consequences are averted by fortious
coincidences.
Melodrama provided an opportunity to escape from the harsh social conditions
and also addressed issues such as adultery, incest, moral corruption, etc... It
provided "moral" education within an accessible format. Pantomime is
educational which is the children performance in which the audience
participates.
Although Melodrama was devised for the middle and lower classes, without a
gender intentionality, it appealed mainly to women. Melodrama plots rewarded
female characters who sacrified their lives for their families, defended their
virtue against all odds and fought adamantly against villany.

Edgar Allan Poe has been perceived very negatively for a long time by his fellow
Americans. Please, explain the reason/s why this has been the case and the
opinion that modern critics tend to have of this famous author.
Edgar Allan Poe was an author that wrote the Reaven. The Reaven is the
representation of the sad memories and bad luck. He has dicotomies: rationality
vs irrationality; reason vs unreason; good vs evil. He wants achieving a
philosophical effect through artistry. He also makes a transition of time (from
being aware to being slept), from logic to madness. There is also a boundary
between reality and fiction.

Nathaniels Hawthorne, in his short story The Maypole of Merry Mount
confronts the Puritans and the worshippers of the Maypole. How does he depict
both groups? Which one does he side with? Please, provide a summary of how
this confrontation is resolved.
The leader of Puritans was Endicott.
The worshippers of the Merry Mount were happy people. They celebrate the
Maypole which is a tall pine tree of eighty feet and it represents a guide for
arriving to the land, they dressed the Maypole with flowers and danced around it.
The Puritans did not agree with them and they wanted to impose their beliefs.
Their members could not dance like people of Merry Mount.
One day, they were celebrating a pagan ceremony of Edgar and Edith. Puritans
arrived to the place and they wanted to kill Maypolers. Endicott cut the Maypole.
Edith and Edgar said that they wanted to die together, so Endicott was surprised.
He did not kill them.
So, this couple represents the pure love. At the beginning Puritans represent
"good" and Maypolers "evil", but it can be reversed.
In this short story, we have a dicotomy between counterfeit of happines (fake of
hapiness) and the real happiness.
We also find the theme of love, hope, Puritans vs Indiands.

Frederick Douglass in his Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave
explores the differences between city slaves and plantation slaves. What are
these differences according to him? How are they treated by their masters in
each environment?

Slaves who live in the city are better threatened than slaves who live in the
plantation. In the city, landowners are controlled, they cannot give a bad
representation. Although, in the plantation, landowners are not controlled and
they force their slaves to work very hard.
In this story, there is ephiphany, because there is a turning point from one
person to another. The mistress could not be relation with slaves, they could not
be educated. They had to be inferior to their owner.
Douglass wanted the equality in the education.

for passively resisting what he considers government intrusions. What is his main
justification for supporting and defending that kind of resistance?
Passively resisting is doing nothing, only waiting for others to take action. You
