NIGERIA AGRO-INPUTS PROJECT

The agro-input sector in Nigeria is not as vibrant as it ought to be. The

factors contributing to this include low investments in the sector, low use of
fertillizer and improved seeds, agricultural policy inconsistency, poor quality
of inputs and low entrepreneurial capacity of agro-dealers. In order to
address these constraints and to improve agricultural productivity, USAID
Nigeria and the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) launched
the Feed the Future Nigeria Agro-Inputs project in October 2014 with the
goal of supporting the development of a vaible agro-input sub-sector. To
achieve this goal, the project partners with both private and public sector
stakeholders in the maize, sorghum, rice, and cassava value chains in the
States of Bauchi, Kano, Niger, Kano, Jigawa ,the Federal Capital Territory,
Kogi and Oyo.

Project Priority
Activities

Strengthen the capacity of agroinput regulations enforcement

officials

Strengthen the entrepreneurial

capacity of agro-dealers and
support the extension of dealer
networks

Improve smallholder demand for

inputs and for good agricultural
practices

Empower women and youth

farmers to access inputs and
new technologies

Partner existing and new agroallied industries to develop a

viable agro-input sector

Strengthening and expanding agro-dealer capacity

Investment by various private sector companies in the agro-input sub-sector
is expected to reach $5 billion, and will most likely improve the availability
and accessibility of fertilizer and
improved seeds for farmers. In
anticipation of this, the Feed the
Future Nigeria Agro-Inputs Project
will work with manufactures,
importers, distributors and retailers
to develop a robust input supply
system. This will be done through
training and support for extending
the dealer networks accessible by
women, youth and other vulnerable groups.

Input Quality Control

The poor quality of agro-inputs and the absence of
a consistent quality control regulation have
negative consequences on yields, the environment
and farmer incentives to invest. The project will
work with the Farm Input Supply Services and the
FMARD-designated regulators to align the fertilizer
and seed regulations with the ECOWAS regulations
to ensure that only high quality and unadulterated
inputs are sold in the market.

Stimulating smallholder demand for

inputs
Through good agricultural practice training on demonstration plots and mass
education by radio, the Feed the Future Nigeria Agro-Inputs Project aims to
improve demand for quality inputs and associated technologies.
