Wheeling for Healing set for Aug. 10

The 16th annual Wheeling for Healing bike ride benefitting the Cancer Care Center at Froedtert Health Community Memorial Hospital, Menomonee Falls, will be held Saturday, Aug. 10. In addition to raising money for the hospitals Cancer Care Center, Wheeling for Healing honors and celebrates the many cancer patients who have completed or are undergoing treatment. Craig McKee, evening news anchor from WISN TV, will return as this years ride marshal. The post-ride celebration begins at 9:45 a.m. with brunch, entertainment, raffles, games and more. Choose from four routes through Menomonee Falls and Germantown including a family-friendly 4-mile route, a 15-mile route for more ambitious riders or a more challenging 32-mile route. New this year, the event will offer a 62-mile bike route for avid cyclists that continues north to Jackson with a rest stop at Froedtert Health St. Josephs Hospital in West Bend. All routes begin and end at Community Memorial Hospital in Menomonee Falls. Participants can sign up to ride individually, as a family or as a team at communitymemorialfoundation.org. Warhawk Band Boosters Golf Outing set for Aug. 26

The Germantown High School Warhawk Band Boosters will host its 11th Annual Golf Outing on Monday, Aug. 26, at Scenic View Country Club, 4415 Club Drive, Slinger. Sign-in for the popular community event begins at 10 a.m., with a shotgun start following at 11 a.m. Golfers of all ability levels will play 18 holes in a scramble format and enjoy lunch during their round. At 4:30 p.m., participants will gather at the clubhouse for dinner, an awards presentation, raffles, and a performance by the Germantown High School Wall of Sound marching band. Golf, lunch, dinner, drink tickets and entertainment are included in the $80 fee; however, an option to attend the evening dinner and entertainment portion only is available for $25. The registration deadline is Aug. 12. The event is one of the organization's primary fundraising activities, garnering much of the financial support needed to run the high school's band programs for the upcoming year. Funds raised are used to purchase uniforms, equipment, instruments and lockers, as well as provide student musician scholarships to band and leadership camps. The Heritage Weekend returns to Lisbon Community Park, N78W26970 Bartlett Parkway, on Aug. 10-11 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. More than 65 re-enactors and more than 25 camps will be on-site representing their historic time period with demonstrations, games and other sights and sounds for an exciting historic adventure. See a live presentation of an American Indian hoop dancer and colonial dancers , witness a Civil War surgical unit re-enact war-time surgeries, enjoy a variety of period music - fife, violin and and visit re-enactment camps, including Romans/Greeks, Western cowboy, World War II, Marines, Civil War, American Indian, Israeli soldiers and more. Stop by and see antique fire engines and cars from varying time periods. There will also be a game between the Lisbon Prairie Dogs and Dead City in a historic baseball game on Saturday. The event is free.

Germantown Youth Futures Disc Golf Extravaganza set for Aug. 13

The annual Germantown Youth Futures Disc Golf Extravaganza will be held Tuesday, Aug. 13 (rain date is Aug. 20) at Spassland Park. This familyfocused event will feature games, concessions and demonstrations from professional disc golfers. Interested individuals and families should pre-register early to be eligible for golf and prizes. Check-in will be from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Nine holes take approximately 45 minutes to play. The event costs $3/person (includes hotdog, nachos or drink). Register thru the Germantown Recreation Dept. office at (262) 2504710; first 50 participants will be awarded a players package. Participants can check out a disc free of charge or purchase one on site for $8.

Falls teen organizes blood drive

A blood drive that was scheduled earlier this year will take on added importance due to a reduction in blood donations in June. A blood drive will be held at the Menomonee Falls Public Library, W156 N8436 Pilgrim Rd., from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 9. This drive is particularly important now because the Red Cross has issued an emergency blood donation request after there was a significant decrease in the month of June, blood drive organizer Emily Suetholz said in an email. The Red Cross had a 10% decrease in the number of blood donations throughout the month of June, and they received about 50,000 less donations then they had expected. To give you an idea about what these numbers mean, on average of about 44,000 blood donations are used in one day. When reached for comment later, Suetholz said the event was planned before the shortfall but said it is now important to get large amount of donors at the even so the Red Cross can recover from the previous month. Suetholz first became involved in blood drives when she joined the Health Care Academy program while a sophomore at Menomonee Falls High School. She explained that students in the academy put on two blood drives each year, one through the Red Cross and one through Blood Center of Wisconsin. Suetholz has volunteered for four blood drives over the past two years. Suetholz said the main reasons people do not donate is because they are never asked or they are afraid of needles. I can speak as a donor and say the needle is really not that big, and if you do not like needles maybe you can look the other way. I would encourage anyone, even those with a fear of needles, to come out and attempt to donate, she said. Diamond Club U14 team third at USSSA Class B state Championship
Cardinals lead Land OLakes standings

The Sussex Cardinals were on top of the Land O'Lakes baseball West Division standings with two weekends of games left to play. Sussex had a 13-3 record, one game ahead of the Pewaukee Muskies. The Cardinals beat the Menomonee Falls Lakers July 21, 10-8. Sussex will host the Brookfield Blue Sox at 1 p.m. July 28 at Village Park. The Cardinals will finish the regular season against the Brookfield Bulldogs at McCoy Field at 2 p.m. Aug. 3. Menomonee Falls was fourth in the division with a 10-5 record. The Lakers will play a doubleheader July 28, hosting the Pewaukee Muskies at 11:30 a.m. at Trenary Field and then playing the second game at 2:30 p.m. Menomonee Falls will close the season against Merton at 2 p.m. Aug. 3. The Lannon Stonemen are ninth in the division with a 7-9 record. Lannon will host the Brookfield Blue Sox at 2 p.m. Aug. 3 and the West Bend 7 Up at 1 p.m.
