Universal seal

Changing the
mould for
seals
Haight Pumps has released a new
UniverSeal. The Seal has been
designed to improve the versatility,
adaptability and maintainability of
gear pump seals. The shaft seal
design has become a standard
feature on Haight's extensive line
of
rotary
gear
Positive
Displacement pumps.
Historically when a pump was
ordered, it was application oriented towards a single seal type. With
the advent of the UniverSeal
design, all pumps in the standard
Haight product line will be able to
accept lip seals, mechanical seals
or packing gland shaft seals.
End users specify the 'factory' seal
they want and change it later,
depending on application needs.
Haight claim that it is the only
design on the market that allows
end users to switch, on-line, inplace, from lip seal to mechanical
seal or packing. Modification uses
off-the-shelf standard components, without the need for
special tools.
Other benefits claimed for the
UniverSeal design include:
reduced pump inventory needs;
simplified
packing
gland
adjustment;
operation
at
standard motor speeds without
the need for a gear reducer;
close coupling to eliminate alignment issues; easy service and
inspection accessibility; lower
noise; longer service life; extended reliability; and reduced
operating costs
"Most importantly of all, with our
new UniverSeal design an end user
can count on Haight as a single
source of positive displacement
rotary gear pumps," says Gordon
Durand, Division Manager.

Powe,

Huge boiler feed pump

destuned for p o w e r station
KSB
Aktiengesellschaft has recently
completed and tested
what it says is the
largest feed pump ever
built in its 125-year
history. Weighing in
at around 40 tonnes
when fully loaded, the
pump is intended for a
new 1000 MW block
of a lignite-fired power
station in Niederaussem near Cologne. The
power station block
is scheduled to start
operation in late 2002.

water. The test

run revealed that
flow rate and
head, as well as
the suction behaviour,
complied with the
projected values.
Verification of
the full load
pump's guaranteed performance
and
efficiency
data will take
place later under
operating
conditions.

Designed to serve as
full load feed pump the unit will
pass boiler feed water with a
temperature of 200C into the
steam generator, producing an
operating pressure of 360 bar.
Under full load conditions the
power input to the pump unit,
including booster pump, is 30

MW. The maximum power

input is 42 MW so tolerances
are high.
Since such input power is only
available in power stations the
test was carried out at reduced
speed and power, using cold
