----------------------------------------------------------Melbourne,VIC | In what was a surprising battle for the
wooden spoon, the Wollongong Miners took a crucial
victory over the Melbourne Monarchs 31-17.
With back up Quarterback Lewis Key leading the
way, another unsung hero in Tom Bond scored 4 times on
the night sending shockwaves through the Melbourne
camp. "We knew Lewis could get the job done. Perhaps we
spent a little more time on getting the detail right for him
and that made a big difference. We could have learnt a
valuable lesson here" said Coach Steve O'Dea. Key was
accurate with his passing, efficient being the perfect word.
And when he was under pressure he had enough mobility
to scramble away from the danger. Meanwhile both
running backs Francis Elliott and Boind had big nights.
Elliott did a lot of the heavy lifting but Bond chased in. He
scored first from a swing pass from Key but then ran in
short touchdown scores after a 9, 13 and 5 play drives.
Melbourne struggled all night. "We just do not
have any confidence at the moment. Our Defence is
getting the job done but they can only hang on for so long.
We need to start getting some bigger plays on offence"
Coach Steve Ella said. Melbourne did score first through a
45 yard field goal to Scott Lawrence but that would be the
only time they would lead all night. The MIners had them
down 14-3 at the half and 21-3 in the third before Tyrone
Redman scored. hayden napoletano scrambled in another
touchdown but by then the game was gone and
Wollongong were playing their back ups.
