Product Overview
FASTRACK emulsions are manufactured by Dow Coating Materials, a division of The Dow
Chemical Company. These formulations are water-based, acrylic emulsions that are milkywhite in color with an ammonia odor.1,2,3 For further details, see Product Description.
FASTRACK emulsions produce durable, fast-drying, traffic-marking paints that retain glass
beads better than alkyd formulas. These marking paints can be applied under a variety of
conditions.4,5,6 For further details, see Product Uses.
FASTRACK emulsions are currently approved for use in products that are for exterior
application only, as with traffic paint. For an interior environment, the application of these high
ammonia products requires additional safety considerations, including ventilation, material
handling, and air monitoring. Dow requires the FASTRACK Product Stewardship Checklist to
be completed. Contact your sales representative for more information. Workers applying
these materials can minimize the potential for exposure by carefully following application
directions and wearing the proper safety equipment.7,8 For further details, see Exposure
Potential.
Inhalation of vapors or mist can cause headache, nausea, and irritation of the nose, throat
and lungs. Contact may cause eye/skin irritation. Prolonged or repeated contact may cause
slight irritation. These products contain ammonium hydroxide. There are no known chronic
effects from ammonia as a result of prolonged low-level exposure.9,10,11 For further details,
see Health Information.
Accidental release of FASTRACK emulsions to land or water should be contained. Acrylic
polymers are generally stable materials and can almost be considered inert in the
environment. These materials do not readily decompose or biodegrade in the environment.
Although these polymers are nonbiodegradable, they are bioeliminable. In other words, they
are removed from environmental compartments where they would be available to aquatic

Product Uses21,22,23,24
FASTRACK emulsions provide durable, fast-drying, waterborne traffic-marking paints that
retain glass beads for night visibility better than alkyd formulas and wear well on concrete and
asphalt. These marking paints retain durability even when applied under marginal air flow,
temperature, and humidity conditions with minimal exposure to volatile organic compounds
(VOCs). These products include:
FASTRACK 2706 Emulsion acrylic emulsion for fast-dry traffic paint, typically lasting 6
months to a year.
FASTRACK E-2706 ER Emulsion acrylic emulsion for fast-dry traffic paint.
FASTRACK 3427 Emulsion acrylic emulsion for fast-dry traffic paint with improved
durability, typically lasting a year to 18 months.
FASTRACK HD-21A Emulsion acrylic emulsion designed with patented crosslinking
technology that provides excellent long-term adhesion properties to roadways and glass
beads. Provides excellent multiyear durability and fast drying time.
FASTRACK 53 Emulsion acrylic emulsion for fast-dry traffic paint with improved whiteness.
FASTRACK XSR Emulsion - acrylic emulsion for fast-dry traffic paint designed to provide
excellent performance under low temperature application conditions.

Exposure Potential25,26,27
FASTRACK emulsions are approved for exterior use. For an interior environment, the
application of these high ammonia products requires additional safety considerations, including
ventilation, material handling, and air monitoring. Dow requires that the FASTRACK Product
Stewardship Checklist be completed. For further details, contact your sales representative.
Workers applying these materials can minimize the potential for exposure by carefully following
application directions and wearing the proper safety equipment.28,29,30 Special precautions must
be taken to minimize ammonia exposure if these products are spilled or used indoors. Based on
this information, the public could be exposed through:
Workplace exposure Exposure can occur either in a facility that manufactures
FASTRACK emulsions or in industrial, commercial, or manufacturing facilities that use these
products. Those working with these materials in manufacturing operations could be exposed
during maintenance, sampling, testing, or other procedures. Each manufacturing facility
should have a thorough training program for employees and appropriate work processes,
ventilation, and safety equipment in place to limit unnecessary exposure. See Health
Information.
Consumer exposure to products containing FASTRACK emulsions Dow Coating
Materials, a division of The Dow Chemical Company, does not sell FASTRACK emulsions for
direct consumer use. The potential for consumer exposure from traffic-marking paint is
considered negligible. See Health Information.
Environmental releases In the event of a spill, the focus is on containing the spill to
prevent contamination of soil and surface or ground water. Spilled material may create
slippery conditions. Absorb small spills with inert absorbents such as sand, sawdust, or cat
litter. Collect recovered material in properly labeled containers and dispose of it according to
applicable government requirements. Because the polymer is bioleliminable, it will be
removed by wastewater-treatment plants. See Environmental, Health, and Physical Hazard
Information.
Large release Industrial spills or releases are infrequent and generally contained. Spilled
material should be captured, collected, and reprocessed or disposed of according to
applicable governmental requirements. Only properly trained and equipped personnel should
attempt to isolate or contain a large spill. Keep people away and upwind of spill/leak. See
Environmental, Health, and Physical Hazard Information.
In case of fire Keep people away and deny any unnecessary entry into the area. Stay
upwind and out of low areas where fumes can accumulate. This material is not combustible,
but dried product can burn. The material can splatter above 100C (212F). Thermal
decomposition may yield acrylic monomers. Use extinguishing media that are appropriate for
the surrounding fire. Firefighters should wear self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and
protective firefighting clothing. Contain fire-water run-off if possible as it may cause
environmental damage. Follow emergency procedures carefully. See Environmental, Health,
and Physical Hazard Information.

Health Information31,32,33
Health information for FASTRACK emulsions is summarized on the relevant Safety Data Sheet.
It is important to note that health risks associated with individual products may vary based on
their formulation or intended use. The Safety Data Sheets are the preferred source for specific
health information. An overview of health information for FASTRACK emulsions appears below.
Eye contact Direct contact with the material may cause slight eye irritation.
Skin contact Prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause slight irritation.
Inhalation Inhalation of vapor or mist may cause headache, nausea, and/or irritation to the
upper respiratory tract (nose and throat) and lungs. Adequate ventilation should always be used
to prevent worker exposure to chemical vapors. A large indoor spill of this material could result in
an airborne ammonia concentration that could exceed allowable exposure limits.
For more information, request the relevant Safety Data Sheet from the Dow Customer Information
Group.

Environmental Information34,35,36
Environmental risks associated with individual FASTRACK emulsions can be found in the
Safety Data Sheet, which is the preferred source for specific information. An overview of
environmental information for FASTRACK emulsions appears below.
Spilled FASTRACK emulsions should be prevented from entering soil, ditches, sewers,
waterways, and/or groundwater. These materials do not readily decompose or biodegrade in the
environment. Although these polymers are nonbiodegradable, they are bioeliminable. In other
words, they are removed from environmental compartments where they would be available to
aquatic organisms. The removal process is via rapid sorption to sediment, suspended solids, and
organic matter. This process makes the polymers less bioavailable, thereby further reducing
toxicity. Typically the molecular weight of these polymers is such that it precludes uptake by
aquatic organisms and thus bioaccumulation is highly unlikely. The emulsion polymers are also
generally nontoxic to activated sludge wastewater systems and are considered bioeliminable in
wastewater-treatment plants (via sorption to biosolids).
For more information, request the relevant Safety Data Sheet from the Dow Customer Information
Group.

Regulatory Information
Regulations exist that govern the manufacture, sale, transportation, use, and/or disposal of
FASTRACK emulsions. These regulations may vary by city, state, country, or geographic
region. Information may be found by consulting the relevant Safety Data Sheet from the Dow
Customer Information Group or downloading it from the appropriate Rohm and Haas web page.
