world. After a few years, he went to school, but his mind often wandered that he has been labelled
addled. This put an ax on his three months of formal schooling and instead read a textbook named
R.G. Parker's School of Natural Philosophy. Going through a lot for his age, he had gone from selling
sweets and newspapers on train to being struck in the ear by a conductor. Yet, he had invented the first
practical electric light bulb. He is Thomas Edison, and he is a late-bloomer.
Most dictionaries convey the relatively same meaning on late bloomers. According to MerriamWebster, a late bloomer is someone who becomes successful, attractive, etc., at a later time in life than
other people. Dictionary.com states late bloomer as a person whose talents or capabilities are slow to
develop. Oxford Dictionary stipulates late bloomer as person who only at a certain time matures. But,
encompassing scholarly papers and human experiences, a distinct definition is made. Although a late
bloomer is weak at first, he can be a person of great mind, camaraderie, and one who finds strength in
uniqueness.
A late bloomer has a slow beginning, but extraordinary mental prowess. A person considered
such may be incapable at first glance, but through training and patience, they may as well change the
world with their inconsistency. Many theories provides insights on how children develop and what are
the factors that affect this. The studies also convey that children might develop at different paces on
their intellectual, physical and social abilities. A child who progress at a faster rate than average is
considered a prodigy, while those who lag behind are treated differently and seen as slow. This view on
the student by the teacher may carry on towards the latter time and it becomes an influence on the
childs performance although such performance has improved. Its connection from the past to future
mirrors a self-fulfilling prophecy on the child that can have negative impacts on them.
Some late bloomers are known in the society that they are a household name. As part of the
introduction, Thomas Edison, a freethinker, is a good example of this property. His random thoughts
have the cause of this drop out and many psychologist implying he may have Attention-deficit
hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) . This disorder affect around 3-5% of the children. Beyond that, he has
his experimental disposition in life reflected on his works. He is one of the most prolific inventors, on
his name he has 1,093 patents in the US alone. His inventions have shaped if not catalysed the fields of
electricity, sound recording and motion picture and later became a successful businessman, founding
what has become General Electric. Another prime example is the formulator of E=mc^2, Albert
Einstein. He had difficulties with his speech as a child and language delay can be associated with
transcendent analytical skills as implied by Steven Pinker. Some further examples are Pablo Picasso
and Tom Cruise. It sends a message of late bloomers known for what they have contributed in the
society.
A late bloomer values the friendship and trust of the people around him. Their late discovery of
their capabilities helps them connect with people, e.g. family & mentors, to improve himself.
According to Ms. Nolasco, a management professor at DLSU, most students of the university does not
act at their age and can be considered as late bloomers. She has inferred that these people are very
dependent, complainant, and not persevered initially. However, as pressure is applied on the students,
their performance improves and even surpass themselves. In addition, Thomas Edison, who has been
homeschooled by his mother, has said "My mother was the making of me. She was so true, so sure of
me; and I felt I had something to live for, someone I must not disappoint." This states a late bloomer
excels further with the help of external factors that tap their emotional and sentimental values.
On the same token, the socially challenged people may become some of the most proficient
communicators. A individual may be reserved firstly, but the mind wanders off on how to ask for help
to improve on what they are weak. An article in New York Times implies dyslexic people through
implanting responsibilities and efficient verbal communication may reach their goals swiftly.
A late bloomer fulfils himself with uniqueness and diversity. They are typically not fond of
current practices that they break off the chain and contemplate on the universal theories. They can have
trouble with the usual that they prefer a multitude of resources to quench their thirst for enlightenment.
As J.R. Tolkien put it, Not all those who wander are lost. They are not specialised singly because
they master one thing and move on to the next to realise diversity. An article conveys that they can be
considered as Renaissance Souls, people of enlightenment that explore looks at detail in close and see
the bigger picture with such small detail.
Late bloomers are present in the society, just like how factual is the existence of oxygen gas.
They can be initially challenged at the skills of what is expected of them. Some of these challenges can
actually kill the bud of the fragile late bloomer, some may protect it, and some may nourish it. In its
essence, a late bloomer can blossom into an aesthetically fulfilling flower because of exceptional
intellectual capabilities, social circle, and identity.
