Upgrading objectives; analysis and composition of non-distillable material and its relationship to
upgrading; upgrading processes; refinery products and specifications. Processes for which
technical and scientific data are available will be emphasized.
ENPE 507 WELL LOGGING AND FORMATION EVALUATION

Wireline well logging; log interpretation: lithology, porosity, near wellbore fluid saturations;
mechanical, electrical, acoustic, nuclear response tools; relationship to geology & geophysics,
reservoir, production, & drilling engineering; reservoir management.
ENPE 509 WELL TESTING

Basic theory and current techniques for well testing. Drawdown and Build up. Single-rate and
multi-rate. Derivative analysis. Fractured wells, fractured reservoirs and other flow models.
Advanced decline curve analysis. Computer aided analysis and hands on experience in the

ENCH 607- NATURAL GAS PROCESSING PRINCIPLES

Physical and chemical properties of natural gas; phase behaviour; vapour-liquid equilibrium;
water-hydrocarbon systems; flow of gas and gas-liquid mixtures; mass transfer operations to
separate gas mixtures; heat transfer in gas processing; chemical kinetic aspects, engineering
principles for natural gas production.
This course does not count towards the degree requirements of MSc and PhD students.
ENCH 613 ADVANCED TOPICS IN MASS TRANSFER

Fundamentals of mass transfer in multi-phase systems. Basic theories of diffusion as well as
mass transfer with simultaneous heat transfer and chemical reaction will be examined with
regards to their applications to practical systems. The emphasis will be on developing
mathematical models for industrially relevant systems involving mass transfer in multiphase
systems.
ENCH 615 MODEL PREDICTIVE CONTROL

Advanced model predictive control methods for the control of chemical and process engineering
systems. Multiple loop control (multiple loop pairing, tuning and de-coupling). Multiple unit and
plant wide control, Model predictive control- single and multi variable Dynamic Matrix Control
(DMC), Internal Model Control (IMC) and Generic Model Control (GMC). An introduction to self-
tuning and adaptive control. An introduction to computational intelligence in control (experts
systems, fuzzy logic and neural systems). Application to chemical and process engineering.

Enhanced recovery modeling (generalized black-oil, compositional & miscible), well treatment,
grid orientation, new developments in gridding, thermal models, naturally fractured reservoirs
and induced fractures, adaptation of models to vector & parallel machines, and practical aspects
of conducting simulation studies.
Prerequisite or Co requisite: Petroleum Engineering 523 or equivalent

Basic thermodynamic principles, calculation of thermodynamic properties, ideal and non-ideal
solution theory, calculation of phase equilibria, properties of reacting mixtures.

Formulation and Solution of reservoir-engineering problems including thermal processes (e.g.
hot water flooding, SAGD), different recovery mechanisms (e.g. imbibitions, expansion drive,
solution-gas drive), well testing problems and naturally fractured reservoirs.
Prerequisite: Petroleum Engineering 429 or Petroleum Engineering 523 or consent of the
Department
ENCH 661 GEOSTATISTICS FOR RESERVOIR CHARACTERIZATION [P]

Special emphasis on reservoir characterization and the particular problems encountered in that
area. The geostatistical methodology for reservoir characterization will be demonstrated on a
fluvial reservoir example.

applications.
