The M-I SWACO PRESSURE & FLUID
MANAGEMENT SYSTEMis our innova-
tive answer for coiled-tubing drilling
and completion techniques and tech-
nologies that require precise pressure
control and efficient removal of waste
and gas from drilling fluids. The sys-
tem accomplishes these objectives
while satisfying environmental reg-
ulations, narrow pressure-gradient
limitations, solids-removal specifica-
tions, and space, weight and time lim-
itations for any coiled-tubing project.
Because of its modular design,
the compact system can be trans-
ported to land or offshore rigs and
unloaded in just six lifts. Rig-up and
rig-down require minimal time and
space because virtually all of the
necessary electrical and plumbing
are self-contained.
The end result of the systems equip-
ment and design is a closed-loop, con-
tinuous operation which is proven and
tested to free your fluids of unwanted
solids and gas, reducing costs and
increasing safety on your rig.
Two separate sections
ensure thorough processing
The system consists of several pieces
of equipment organized into two
main sections that ensure complete
processing and safe operation in
any application. The two sections
and their major components are:

The equipment configurations used
on most rigs are not suited to coiled-
tubing drilling or other types of drill-
ing that require very close monitoring
of pressures and solids-control param-
eters. Additionally, these more com-
mon configurations are not optimized
for small spaces.

The M-I SWACO* PRESSURE & FLUID

has been
designed specifically for the needs
of coiled-tubing drilling: automatic,
accurate control of pressures and
fluids parameters; small equipment
footprint; and self-contained electrical
and plumbing.

The PRESSURE & FLUIDMANAGEMENT
SYSTEMgives operators and drilling
contractors a big advantage in control-
ling the problems that can ruin a proj-
ect financially: blowouts, stuck pipe,
lost circulation, formation damage,
collateral-equipment damage and
lost time due to logistics problems.

E N V I R O N M E N T A L
Inmost areas, smaller drillingoperations
aresubject tothesameenvironmental
restrictions as larger projects. The
PRESSURE & FLUIDMANAGEMENT SYSTEM
reduces disposal andfluids costs inaddi-
tiontotheenvironmental benefits of
avoidingwell-control incidents.
How the PRESSURE & FLUID MANAGEMENT SYSTEMworks
1. Fluid from the drilling operation is routed
from the well to a pressure-control-section
inlet. The fluid will enter through the
pressure-control inlet and valves are
opened or closed as needed to direct the
used fluid through either the first choke
or the second choke. Upon exiting the first
or second choke, the fluid will be directed
to a manifold outlet.
Note: The pressure-control section is
equipped with two M-I SWACO SUPER
AUTOCHOKE units. The second choke is
provided as a backup in the event that
the first choke becomes nonfunctional
for any reason. Thus, if the first choke is in
need of repair or must undergo preventive
maintenance requiring it to be taken off-
line, the manifold valves may be used
to redirect fluid flow to the second choke
while the first choke is repaired or main-
tained and the drilling process may
continue uninterrupted. The manifold also
includes a diverter line which can act as a
third flow path in the unlikely event that
the two chokes fail or exceed capacity or
pressure limitations.
2. Fluid from the manifold is directed to a
MUD/GAS SEPARATOR which includes a
tank within which are a series of baffles.
The contaminated fluid is directed through
a tank inlet, located near the top of the
tank. Flow inside the tank is tangential to
the tank wall, resulting in a vortex effect.
The drilling fluid splashes over the series
of baffles, causing entrained gases to
break free. The gases are released through
a vent in the top of the tank. The degassed
drilling fluid is directed to a separator out-
let located in the side of the tank near the
bottom which is equipped with a float to
prevent overloading the separator and dis-
charge of the gas over the DWM tank area.
3. A flare line directs the gases to a safe
area away from operations.
4. Degassed fluid from the gas separator
gravity-feeds to the possum belly of
the MONGOOSE PT shale shaker which is
outfitted with MAGNUMXR screens that
separate solids of a predetermined size
from the fluid.
Note: The shaker is mounted on
the DWM tank which includes:
The MONGOOSE PT shale shaker
Two solids-collection containers
A 4T4 D-SILTER
A vacuum D-GASSER
A fluid-collection tank divided into
three pits
5. The solids are then directed to a solids-
collection container. The shaker is
mounted above the solids-collection
container so that gravity can move the
separated solids from the shaker to an
auger that moves them, in turn, to the
solids-collection container. Depending
on the application, the customer might
want a reversible auger so that cuttings
can be collected at both ends of the auger,
first at one end, and then the other, by
simply changing the augers direction
of rotation.
6. Next, the fluid from the shaker moves to
pit #1 within the fluid-collection tank, and
from there it is pumped to the D-GASSER
(6a), to remove entrained gases that were
not removed initially in the MUD/GAS
SEPARATOR. The gases removed from the
fluid are vented (3). The D-GASSER is on a
modular skid, allowing it to be conveniently
located over the fluid-collection tank.
7. The degassed fluid then moves to pit #2
in the fluid-collection tank. Fluid from the
second pit is designed to back flow to pit
#1 for reprocessing by the D-GASSER.
8. The fluid collected in the second pit is
pumped to the 4T4 D-SILTER used to
remove additional solids to a 25-micron
cut point.
9. The desilted fluid is then sent to pit #3
in the fluid-collection tank. Fluid from the
third pit is designed to back flow to pit #2
for reprocessing by the D-GASSER.
10. Fluid from the third pit is pumped to
the active rig pumps for recirculation
down the wellbore.
