17 A student uses the potentiometer shown in the figure to compare the emf of a thermocouple with the emf
of a standard cell S of emf 1.018 V. A 505 resistor is connected in series with the potentiometer slide wire
BC of length 100.0 cm and has a resistance of 5.0 .

(a) What is the use of the 505 resistor connected in series with the potentiometer? [ 1 mark]

18 (a) (i) Define the capacitance of a capacitor. [ 1 mark]
(ii) A potential difference is applied across an air-filled parallel plate capacitor. State the physical
properties of the capacitor that determine the maximum charge stored. If a mica is inserted between the
plates, what happens to the capacitance of the capacitor? [ 3 marks]

(b) A circuit with two capacitors and a battery is shown in the diagram below.

Determine
(i) the total amount of charge that flows in the circuit. [ 3 marks]
(ii) the potential difference across the 300 F capacitor. [ 2 marks]

(c) A circuit consisting of a 6.0 V battery, a 3000 F capacitor and a 1.0 k resistor is shown in the
diagram below.

The switch S is closed at terminal P so that the capacitor is fully charged. Then, it is closed at terminal Q.
(i) Calculate the time constant for the circuit. [ 2 marks]
(ii) Estimate the energy dissipated through the resistor after 2.0 s. [ 4 marks]
