The Swamp Cooler

A swamp cooler is installed on top of a roof with an air duct leading down into the
home or installed in a window with the air duct being the object that is placed thru
the window opening into the home. There are three or four big vent panels that are
removable around the metal swamp cooler box and once removed the picture
below is the inside of a swamp cooler.

Solar Energy is an important factor on helping the swamp cooler work to the best
of its ability, In fact when the hot sun is shining down on the cooler this will be
when you can get the coldest air from the swamp cooler.

Attached to the inner side of each vent is an evaporative pad that is about two
inches thick and looks somewhat like straw all matted together. Water is then
pumped to the top of the cooler from a reservoir on the bottom where it then flows
into the evaporative pads, the pads retain the water very well. As hot air flows in
thru the vents it travels thru the wet evaporative pads where it is cooled by
evaporation.
Right in front of the air duct is a big fan this fan also helps pull the hot air in thru
the vents and thru the wet pads but it also serves at blowing the cooled air into your
home thru the duct, therefore causing the inside temperature to drop up to 24
degrees cooler.

It is always important to leave a window open a couple of inches while using a
swamp cooler as it also helps pull the cooled air throughout the home creating a
happier environment for the whole family to enjoy.

So how does the swamp cooler relate to geography?
Its all about the earths natural process.

The Water Cycle

The sun (1) also called solar energy, evaporates (3) water (5) from lakes, oceans
and even puddles left around from your garden hose.
As the air rises, it cools.
The water vapor condenses into tiny droplets of water and forms a cloud (2).
Wind blows the cloud towards land.
The tiny droplets of water join together and fall as precipitation (4) to the ground.
The water then soaks back into the ground and collects in rivers and lakes.
And the process begins again. Just like how the swamp cooler works.
