CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA The Cedar Rapids Kernels stymied the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 10-5 to win the three-game series on Friday night at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Kernels recorded thirteen team hits as starting pitcher Ethan Mildren (1-3) got his first victory of the year. Engelb Vielma hit in a season-high four RBIs while Michael Quesada slammed a three-run round-tripper in the fourth inning.
For the second time in the series Wisconsin got on the scoreboard first.
The Timber Rattlers went ahead 4-0 in the third inning on a pair of two-out hits. Jose Pena singled in two runs and Michael Ratterree pummeled a two-run homerun over the left field fence to put Wisconsin in front.
Cedar Rapids answered back in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 4-4. Jason Kanzler singled in Veilma and Michael Quesada homered over the left field wall to knot up the score. The blast was Quesadas second long ball of the year.
The Kernels tallied another run in the fifth off a Vielma sacrifice-fly that brought in Ivory Thomas to make the score 5-4, Cedar Rapids.
Vielma opened the lead to 7-4 in the sixth on a 2-RBI double that brought Bo Altobelli and Joel Licon across the plate.
Wisconsin starter Barrett Astin (5-3) exited the game during the sixth after 5 2/3 inning on the mound. Astin surrendered seven runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking three in his tenth start of the year.
The Rattlers brought in right-hander Rodolpho Fernandez out of the bull pen in the sixth. Fernandez allowed no runs on one hit in his 1 1/3 innings on the hill.
Steven Halcomb recorded an RBI-sacrifice-fly that brought in Raphael Neda in the seventh cutting the lead to 7-5.
Ethan Mildren (1-3) came out of the game in the seventh after throwing six full frames on the mound. The starter gave up five runs on five hits while striking out four and walking two during his first win of the season.
Brandon Bixler entered in the seventh and pitched two scoreless innings through the seventh and eighth while fanning two batters.
Cedar Rapids would plate three insurance runs on four consecutive hits in the eighth to take the decisive 10-5 advantage. Vielma nailed his second double of the night to bring in Walker. Mitch Garver would then plate Vielma on a single to tally his first RBI of the evening. Garver later scored on an RBI-double by Bryan Haar to put the game out of reach.
Right-hander Chris Razo pitched the eighth for Wisconsin and surrendered three runs on five hit in his lone inning on the mound.
Hudson Boyd closed out the game for the Kernels and pitched a scoreless ninth inning while giving up one hit and striking out one.
The Kernels open a three-game series with Burlington on Saturday starting at 5:05 p.m. Its Wedding Crashers Night where fans can crash an actual wedding just by attending the game. Fans can also enjoy a post-game fireworks show along with the music of the Past Masters following the game with Burlington.
LHP Josue Montanez (1-2, 8.27) is scheduled to start Saturday for the Kernels while Burlington is expected to open with RHP Ryan Estell (1-2, 2.93). Tickets are available at www.kernels.com.
