design research and
practices for highway
and street geometric
design. Developed by the
Technical Committee
on Geometric Design, a technical committee of the
Subcommittee on Design, the document provides
guidance to highway engineers and designers who strive
to make unique design solutions that meet the needs
of highway users while maintaining the integrity of the
environment. It is also intended as a comprehensive
reference manual to assist in administrative, planning,
and educational efforts pertaining to design formulation.
Design guidelines are included for freeways, arterials,
collectors, and local roads, in both urban and rural
locations, paralleling the functional classification used
in highway planning. This new edition was written in
coordination with the terms and concepts of the new
fourth edition of the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide.

GUIDE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF BICYCLE
FACILITIES, 4TH EDITION
This guide provides
information on how to
accommodate bicycle travel
and operations in most riding
environments. It is intended
to present sound guidelines
that result in facilities that
meet the needs of bicyclists
and other highway users.
Sufficient flexibility is
permitted to encourage designs that are sensitive to local
context and incorporate the needs of bicyclists, pedestrians
and motorists. However, in some sections of this guide,
suggested minimum dimensions are provided. These
are recommended only where further deviation from
desirable values could increase crash frequency or severity.
This guide has been updated from the previous guide
published in 1999. The fact that new guidance is presented
herein does not imply that existing bicycle facilities are
inadequate or unsafe, nor does it mandate the initiation of
improvement projects. The intent of this document is to
provide guidance to designers and planners by referencing
a recommended range of design values and describing
alternative design approaches. 200 pp.

AASHTO GUIDE FOR THE PLANNING, DESIGN,
AND OPERATIONS OF PEDESTRIAN FACILITIES,
1ST EDITION
The purpose of this guide
is to provide guidance on
the planning, design, and
operation of pedestrian
facilities along streets and
highways. Specifically, the
guide focuses on identifying
effective measures for
accommodating pedestrians
on public rights-of-way.
Appropriate methods
for accommodating pedestrians, which vary among
roadway and facility types, are described in this guide.
The primary audiences for this manual are planners,
roadway designers, and transportation engineers,
whether at the state or local level, the majority of whom
make decisions on a daily basis that affect pedestrians.
This guide also recognizes the profound effect that
land-use planning and site design have on pedestrian
mobility and addresses these topics as well. 2004. 142 pp.

A POLICY ON GEOMETRIC DESIGN OF HIGHWAYS AND STREETS
(THE GREEN BOOK), 6TH EDITION
ROADWAY DESIGN
A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets, 6th Edition, 2011, commonly referred to as
the Green Book, contains the current design research and practices for highway and street geometric
design. Developed by the Technical Committee on Geometric Design, a technical committee of the
Subcommittee on Design, the document provides guidance to highway engineers and designers who
strive to make unique design solutions that meet the needs of highway users while maintaining the
integrity of the environment. It is also intended as a comprehensive reference manual to assist in
administrative, planning, and educational efforts pertaining to design formulation. Design guidelines are
included for freeways, arterials, collectors, and local roads, in both urban and rural locations, paralleling
the functional classification used in highway planning. This new edition was written in coordination with
the terms and concepts of the new fourth edition of the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide. 2011. 912 pp.
Web edition features of the Green Book include instant online access with nothing to download or
install, single and multi-user license agreements, life-of-edition licenses with no annual renewal fees,
and automatic publication updates as they become available. Users can also easily search by keywords and highlight, print individual pages
and sections, add bookmarks and notes that can be shared with other others, and link to a variety of supplemental information and bonus
materials, including other publications, videos, and webinars.

CHAPTER 11, ERECTING MAILBOXES ON STREETS AND HIGHWAYS,
ROADSIDE DESIGN GUIDE, 4TH EDITION
Chapter 11 of the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide deals with privately
owned mailboxes, mailbox supports, and mailbox turnout designs. Highway
safety is the primary reason for a transportation agency to become involved
in this type of design. Limited data exist for vehicle-mailbox collisions
because most record systems do not specifically isolate these types of crashes.
However, the Fatality Analysis Reporting System showed 294 deaths in 2008
in which an impact with a mailbox was the first harmful event. Although
this number includes crashes in which the mailbox may not have been the
direct cause of the fatal injuries, it is significant because it is associated with
an unnecessary hazard. Because many jurisdictions incorporate this chapter
by reference into their mailbox regulations, the information in this chapter
is frequently of interest to non-engineers and private citizens. Consequently,
AASHTO makes this chapter available for purchase separate from the rest
of the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide at a reduced price. Its content is
identical to that found in the full book.

This book presents a synthesis of current information and operating practices related to
roadside safety and is written in dual unitsmetric and U.S. Customary. This edition
supersedes the 2006 AASHTO publication, which included an update of the Median
chapter. The guide is intended to be used as a resource document from which individual
highway agencies can develop standards and policies. It includes a synthesis of current
information and operating practices related to roadside. It focuses on safety treatments
that can minimize the likelihood of serious injuries when a motorist leaves the roadway.
This guide was written for use by design engineers and professionals involved in
roadside safety and is considered a significant toll that combines current research with
practical experience. 2011. 354 pp.
Web edition features of the Roadside Design Guide include instant online access with nothing to

GUIDELINES FOR GEOMETRIC DESIGN
OF VERY LOW-VOLUME LOCAL ROADS
(ADT 400), 1ST EDITION
These guidelines address the unique design issues
highway designers and engineers face when determining
appropriate cost-effective geometric design policies for
very low-volume local roads. This approach covers both
new and existing construction projects. Because geometric
design guidance for very low-volume local roads differs
from the policies applied to high-volume roads, these
guidelines may be used in lieu of A Policy on Geometric
Design of Highways and Streets, also known as The
Green Book. Design values are presented in both metric
and U.S. customary units. 2001. 94 pp.

A GUIDE FOR ACHIEVING
FLEXIBILITY IN HIGHWAY
DESIGN, 1ST EDITION
Context-sensitive solutions
(CSS) reflect the need to
consider highway projects as
more than just transportation
facilities. Achieving a flexible,
context-sensitive design
solution requires designers to
fully understand the reasons
behind the processes, design
values, and design procedures that are used. This guide
shows highway designers how to think flexibly, how
to recognize the many choices and options they have,
and how to arrive at the best solution for the particular
situation or context. This publication represents a
major step toward institutionalizing CSS into state
transportation departments and other agencies charged
with transportation project development.

PEDESTRIAN AND BICYCLE DESIGN
GUIDE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF BICYCLE FACILITIES, 4TH EDITION
This guide provides information on how to accommodate bicycle travel and
operations in most riding environments. It is intended
to present sound guidelines that result in facilities
that meet the needs of bicyclists and other highway
users. Sufficient flexibility is permitted to encourage
designs that are sensitive to local context and incorpo-
rate the needs of bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists.
However, in some sections of this guide, suggested
minimum dimensions are provided. These are recom-
mended only where further deviation from desirable
values could increase crash frequency or severity. This
guide has been updated from the previous guide pub-
lished in 1999. The fact that new guidance is presented herein does not imply
that existing bicycle facilities are inadequate or unsafe, nor does it mandate the
initiation of improvement projects. The intent of this document is to provide
guidance to designers and planners by referencing a recommended range of
design values and describing alternative design approaches. 2012. 200 pp.

AASHTO GUIDE FOR DESIGN-BUILD
PROCUREMENT, 1ST EDITION
This guide is
intended to assist
state highway
agencies in
procuring design-
build projects,
including preparing
requests for
qualifications
(RFQ) and requests
for proposals (RFP)
and selecting the

This guide is based on best practices from experienced
state highway agencies and other public sector agencies.
This Guide is intended to be flexible for varying project
types, sizes, and procurement requirements. Finally, this
Guide promotes a common design-build vocabulary
for better dissemination of lessons learned and
incorporation of continuous improvement. It is
important to note that this Guide is not intended to be a
procedures manual. It supplies an overarching
description of the strategies for successful design-build
implementation. Each state has its own laws and
regulations so this Guide is generically written for broad
application, but it also offers specific examples of agency
practices to assist with process implementation. 2008.

PRECONSTRUCTION
MANAGEMENT
PRACTICAL GUIDE TO COST
ESTIMATING, 1ST EDITION
A State Transportation
Agencys (STA) ability
to successfully manage
and deliver its program
is largely dependent on
an ability to develop
realistic estimates
of project cost. Cost
estimating involves
not only the collection
of relevant factors
relating to the scope of
a project and the cost
of resources, but it also requires anticipating cost impacts
that may occur due to changes in project scope, available
resources, and national and global market conditions.
This publication provides practical guidance that
serves those charged with the development of STA
estimates and with the management of the estimating
process. This guidebook has two parts. Part I focuses on
key cost-estimate techniques and Part II focuses on cost
management activities. 2013. 230 pp.

AASHTO GUIDE FOR CONSULTING
CONTRACTING, 1ST EDITION
The use of engineering
consultants by state
transportation agencies
continues to be
important in providing
the appropriate solutions
to transportation needs.
This publication replaces
the Guide for
Contracting, Selecting,
and Managing
Consultants in
Preconstruction Engineering, published by AASHTO in
1996. In order to assess current practices, questionnaires
were developed for both state and consultant practitioners.
The responses showed significant growth in the volume of
work done by consultants and in the range of services
provided by consultants. The results of these surveys, along
with the collective experience and expertise of the
technical committee membership, were used to restructure
much of the guide and to update and expand the
discussion of current practices for the effective use of
consultants. 2008. 128 pp.

AASHTO LRFD BRIDGE DESIGN GUIDE
SPECIFICATIONS FOR GFRP-REINFORCED
CONCRETE BRIDGE DECKS AND TRAFFIC
RAILINGS, 1ST EDITION
Glass fiber
reinforced
polymer (GFRP)
materials have
emerged as an
alternative
material for
producing
reinforcing bars
for concrete
structures. GFRP
reinforcing bars
offer advantages
over steel
reinforcement
due to their noncorrosive nature and nonconductive
behavior. Due to other differences in the physical and
mechanical behavior of GFRP materials as opposed to
steel, unique guidance on the engineering and
construction of concrete bridge decks reinforced with
GFRP bars is needed. These guide specifications offer a
description of the unique material properties of GFRP
composite materials as well as provisions for the design
and construction of concrete bridge decks and railings
reinforced with GFRP reinforcing bars. 2009. 68 pp.

esigned for use by state departments of transportation and other
agencies that perform element-level bridge inspections, this manual
is a reference for standardized element definitions, element quantity
calculations, condition state definitions, element feasible actions, and
inspection conventions. Its goal is to capture the condition of bridges
in a simple, effective way that can be standardized nationwide, while
providing enough flexibility to be adapted to both large- and small-
agency settings. The information contained in this manual supersedes
the AASHTO Guide to Commonly Recognized Structural Elements,
1st Edition (1994) and the AASHTO Guide Manual for Bridge Element
Inspection, 1st Edition (2011). 258 pp.
