HIS STAR WILL SHINE IN US AND THROUGH US
Today is Epiphany Sunday. Today the Church celebrates the time when the Christ Child manifested Himself to the magi from the East who represents the gentiles and the world. The three magi were not part of the chosen people, yet, guided by the bright star, they came to worship the Holy Child. By their gifts, we can conclude that they regard the Baby Jesus as King, as God and as the Suffering Servant. In those times, gold is regarded as the king of metals which is fit to be offered to a king. By offering this gift of gold, the magi recognized kingship in the Baby Jesus. Incense was used to offer in the temple as a fragrant offering. It symbolizes the divinity of Jesus Christ. Myrrh is a bitter substance that is used for burial, symbolizing the death of Jesus which brings salvation to the world. Because Epiphany celebrates the manifestation of Jesus to the magi who represents the nonChristians and the gentiles, He was revealed as the Savior and God of the whole world. He came to be the Savior of all who would believe in Him and accept His sovereignty and Lordship. St. Peter Chrysologus spoke of todays feast in this way: Today, the Magi gaze in deep wonder at what they see: heaven on earth, earth in heaven, man in God, God in man. One whom the whole universe cannot contain is now enclosed in a tiny body. As they look they believe and do not question, as their symbolic gifts bear witness: incense for God, gold for a king, and myrrh for one who is to die. Christ was manifested to the world but He is not yet known and loved by many. When the angels sing no more, when the shepherds are back home, when the magi return to their foreign country, the work of Christmas begins. We Christians will proclaim that Jesus is born. Through us He will manifest his love to everyone. Christ is born again in our midst when love becomes our way of life.
