Generic Name: Calcium Gluconate


Indications: Hypocalcemia, tetany, cardiac disturbances of hyperkalemia, cardiac
resuscitation when epinephrine fails to improve myocardial contractions,
hypocalcemia
Drug Classification: Calcium Salt; Electrolyte supplement
Mechanism of Action: When used o prevent or treat negative calcium balance. The
calcium in calcium salts moderates nerve and muscle. Performance and allows
normal cardiac function
Dosage: Neonates: 200-800 mg/kg/day; Infants & Children: 200-500 mg/k/day;
Adults: 2-15 g/ 24 hrs.
Special Precautions: Severe hyperphosphatemia, respiratory failure or acidosis;
avoid extravasation, may produce cardiac arrest; hypercalcemia may
occur in patients with renal failure
Pregnancy Risk Category:C
Adverse Reactions: CNS: IV – tingling, syncope. CV: IV – bradyardia, arrhythmias,
cardiac arrest GI: nausea, vomiting, constipation, metallic taste. GU:
hypercalcuria, calculi Local: phlebitis at IV site
Contraindications:
 In ventricular fibrillation during cardiac resuscitation
 Patients with risk of digital toxicity
 Renal or cardiac disease, renal calculi
 Hypophosphatemia, Hypocalcemia
Form: INJ 10%=100 mg/mL (9 mg/mL, 10-200 mL) TAB: 500mg
Nursing Responsibilities:
 Monitor blood pressure and pulse
 Monitor response & with the adverse reactions
 Assess site for patency
 Monitor calcium level twice weekly during early dose adjustment period
