Kalcinate is a calcium salt used to treat hypocalcemia and cardiac disturbances caused by hyperkalemia. It works by moderating nerve and muscle function and allowing normal cardiac function through supplementation of calcium ions. Dosage varies from 200-800 mg/kg/day in neonates to 2-15 g/24 hrs in adults. Special precautions should be taken in patients with renal or cardiac disease due to risks of hypercalcemia, cardiac arrest, and hyperphosphatemia.

Brand Name: Kalcinate
Generic Name: Calcium Gluconate
Indications: Hypocalcemia, tetany, cardiac disturbances of hyperkalemia, cardiac resuscitation when epinephrine fails to improve myocardial contractions, hypocalcemia Drug Classification: Calcium Salt; Electrolyte supplement Mechanism of Action: When used o prevent or treat negative calcium balance. The calcium in calcium salts moderates nerve and muscle. Performance and allows normal cardiac function Dosage: Neonates: 200-800 mg/kg/day; Infants & Children: 200-500 mg/k/day; Adults: 2-15 g/ 24 hrs. Special Precautions: Severe hyperphosphatemia, respiratory failure or acidosis; avoid extravasation, may produce cardiac arrest; hypercalcemia may occur in patients with renal failure Pregnancy Risk Category:C Adverse Reactions: CNS: IV – tingling, syncope. CV: IV – bradyardia, arrhythmias, cardiac arrest GI: nausea, vomiting, constipation, metallic taste. GU: hypercalcuria, calculi Local: phlebitis at IV site Contraindications: In ventricular fibrillation during cardiac resuscitation Patients with risk of digital toxicity Renal or cardiac disease, renal calculi Hypophosphatemia, Hypocalcemia Form: INJ 10%=100 mg/mL (9 mg/mL, 10-200 mL) TAB: 500mg Nursing Responsibilities: Monitor blood pressure and pulse Monitor response & with the adverse reactions Assess site for patency Monitor calcium level twice weekly during early dose adjustment period
