Week of 9/16/12
I hope you had a chance to enjoy the incredible weather this weekend. I wanted to thank you for coming to Curriculum Night. If you have not already done so, please sign up for parent conferences at: www.SignUpGenius.com/go/10C0D49A4AF22A6F58-parent This year, we are giving families the opportunity to place their Scholastic Book Orders on-line. For every order that is placed on-line, our classroom will receive one free book. It is a great way for us to build up our classroom library. The order forms will come home in Monday folders and are due by Friday, September 20, 2013. We used on-line ordering last year and many families liked the convenience of being able to use a credit card.

ELA Our walls were a smashing success. Our focus this week will be on the strategies we can use to monitor our understanding as we read fiction and nonfiction text. Additionally, we will review parts of speech. In writing, we will begin our Student Council speeches. Read Aloud Our next read aloud is The Miraculous Adventures of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo. Once, in a house on Egypt Street, there lived a china rabbit named Edward Tulane. A girl named Abilene, who treated him with the utmost care and adored him completely, owns the rabbit. And then, one day, he was lost and his adventures begin. Math We will begin Unit 2 this week. Students need to practice math facts nightly. We will be completing weekly mad minutes to check our progress.
Social Studies There are many different types/tools of maps - globes, flat maps, puzzles. We will focus on map scales and directionality this week. We will also watch two videos you might want to check out: Longitude and latitude: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0c1idtn3e8 How to Read a Map: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QlJn_iMe Ag Science This last week, we learned about the Scientific Method and explored the properties of rocks. We will continue this week as we dissect our mock rocks to determine their ingredients. If your child has time, feel free to explore the following website. http://www.learner.org/interactives/ rockcycle/types.html
