Whats Next for Homestead?

This is more than a transition, we are changing history.
- Councilwoman Judy Waldman
Its terrible, Waldman said. This is more than a transition, we are changing history. We are celebrating our centennial and right in the middle of it the Mayor is arrested. In the middle of an election cycle, many questions are still to be answered as to how Homestead will move forward. Within 48 hours after his arrest, Bateman qualified for the election and will be running against three other candidates for the mayoral seat. Its what is allowed by the state election laws, said Burgess, upon Bateman qualifying for the election. I might have done it differently, but if the law allows it See HOMESTEAD, 2A

Florida City Mayor Otis Wallace welcomed Gimenez to deep South Dade. This is the first in my long career that a Mayor came south to talk about the budget, and did it when things were so bad, said Wallace. Mayor, you discovered the secret of See BUDGET, 2A

He has not been convicted of a crime and has his civil rights, so he is able to run for election, Weiss said. - Ron Book, Homeless Trust Chairman

By Dennise Sleeper We look past them sleeping in the park, on benches, at bus stops and at storefronts. We pass them in alleys, panhandling and pushing their belongings along the roadways. They are our homeless. Unfortunately, one doesnt have to look hard to find them in and around our neighborhoods in South Dade. Twice a year the Homeless Trust of Miami-Dade counts the homeless to get an acculow profile and are not likely to be in the same places as the regular homeless population, Ron Book, Homeless Trust Chairman said, but its our responsibility at the Homeless Trust to do what we can to seek them out. If we can find them, we can begin to help them, before they become homeless adults. He said 6,561 students in the Miami-Dade school system could be considered homeless. Some are with their families, while an esti-

Diana Nyad Completes Historic Swim

Diana Nyad didnt just ride the waves, she created them when she completed her swim from Cuba to Key West on Monday. With her lips and tongue swollen, the U.S. endurance swimmer succeeding in becoming the first person to swim the treacherous waters from Cuba to Key West without a shark cage. Nyad looked exhausted, sunburned and weak, but victorious after completing the 110mile swim. We should never give up, said Nyad. Youre never too old to chase your dreams. She proved that in completing the nearly 53-hour marathon swim from Havana on her fifth try. She first attempted it back in 1978, twice in 2011, and then again in 2012. Her last attempt was cut short as she felt the painful effects of jellyfish stings. This trip, she used jelly fish repellent cream and a formfitting mask to protect her face. Upon arriving onto shore, there was a huge crowd waiting for Nyad, some wading into waist-deep water to cheer her on and watch as she finally realized a dream she has been chasing for decades. Taking those final steps from water to dry land, she thanked her team for helping her get through the swim and was then assisted onto a waiting stretcher. Doctors who are traveling with a team of Nyad supporters said on Monday that her swollen lips and tongue were causing her speech to be slurred and they were worried about her airways, but they have not intervened, according to a post on Nyads official website. Nyads journey began Saturday morning when she jumped from the seawall of the Hemingway Marina into the warm waters off Havana. She has been swimming the Florida Strait ever since, stopping from time to time for nourishment. She had gotten very cold overnight, her team said, so they decided not to stop her to eat and drink in hopes that swimming would keep her warm. I admit theres an ego rush, Nyad said before the See NYAD, 2A
