    Poncho with Panache


    Whether youre sporting a poncho for the very first time, or are delighted to find that you can still wear them the second time around, youll love how easy our version is to make. This fun poncho is just a big the outer edges and binding at the neck opening. Piping Foot #38, with its uneven sole, is perfect for applying both trims.

    Supplies

    1 yards fabric 5 yards of fringe 2 yards of fold-over braid Sewing thread to match 3 spool serger thread (optional) Overcasting foot (BERNINA Overlock Foot #2) Piping/ribbon foot (BERNINA Piping Foot #38) Basic sewing supplies

    Instructions Cut a 45 x 45 square from the fabric. If desired, round the corners slightly. TIP: Use a saucer or dessert plate as a template. Overcast all edges using an overlock stitch and Overlock Foot #2, or using a 2- or 3-thread serger overlock stitch. Mark an 8 circle at the center of the square. TIP: Use an 8 dinner plate as a template.

    Draw a line from the center of the circle toward one corner, extending the line 4 past the outer edge of the circle. Straight stitch just inside the edge of the circle, and on each side of the marked line. Carefully cut just inside the stitched lines, creating a circular opening at the center of the poncho, and a straight slit down the front. Pin the fold-over braid over the edges of the slit, raw ends even with the neck edge. Using Piping Foot #38, stitch close to the outer edges of the binding. The cut-away portion of the sole allows the thick edge to move freely under the foot. Pin the remaining fold-over braid to the neck edge, matching the center of the braid with the center back edge of the neck opening. The ends of the braid will extend past the front slit. Stitch the fold-over braid in place, sewing from one end of the braid to the other. The loose ends become ties for the front opening. Knot the ends of the braid.

    VARIATIONS
    THICK & THIN
    If using a very thick fringe, such as those used for upholstery, use Bulky Overlock Foot #12 or 12C; the channel under this foot is able to accommodate larger trims. If using fringe with a thin header, use Edgestitch Foot #10 or 10C and move the needle to the left. When stitching, align the edge of the header with the guide at the center of the foot.

    TIES THAT BIND


    Create binding and ties in one step using the Binder Attachment #84 with Foot #94. The binder comes in three sizes20-24 mm, 22-26 mm, and 26-30 mm.

    Pin the fringe in place along the lower edge of the poncho, overlapping ends 1. Stitch in place using Piping Foot #38. If needed, daub raw ends of fringe with seam sealant; clip when dry.
