GE MS5001P commins 465 HP Starting diesel engine. starting system (diesel) used to increase the speed of the turbine to the necessary level for firing and to help the turbine to accelerate. The major components used to control the diesel engine. 20CS-1: . clutch solenoid energize 20DA1.2: variable position solenoid speed governer . 20DA-1: . governer position solenoid 20DA-1 is energized to maintain the position of the governer, thus setting firing speed. 20DA-2 energizing it raises the governer speed setting and deenergized to lower it. 20DV: energizing 20DV will shutoff fuel flow to the engine. 33CS: limit switch closes when the starting clutch disengaged. 43DE: pushbutton is used to manually start the engine for test. 63DM: pressure switch senses fuel oil pressure an use as an indicating that the engine is running. 63QD:

pressure switch senses lube oil pressure and used as an permissive to operate the engine. Normal start of diesel engine.
start signal given

20cs-1 and 88HR energized to engage starting clutch and initiate ratchet operation. when the master protection circuit is complete the staring motor of diesel engine is energized

the starting cycles for starting motor is 5 second ON and 30second OFF

the cycle is repeated until the engine starts OR 8 cycles have been completed after 8 cycles and the diesel engine has not started the "STARTIG MEANS TROUBLE" appears and starting sequence is terminated. before start another sequence can be initiated the master lockout reset must be depressed

when the diesel starts it remains at IDLE SPEED foe 2 minutes "WRM UP" 20DA-1 and 20DA-2 are deenergized at the end of the "warm up" period 20DA-2 is energized which increases the governer setting to maximum position for turbine break away.

as the turbine shaft increases 20DA-2 is deenergized which move the governer setting toward "IDLE POSITION"approximately 3 seconds later 20DA-1 is energized to stop the governor moving at a point between "IDLE" and maximum position setting. this is the governor setting required to bring the turbine to the correct firing speed

after the turbine flame is established and "WARMUP" period for the turbine is complete 20DA-1 is deenergized and 20DA-2 is energized to help the turbine to accelerate.

when the turbine reaches "SELF-SUSTAINING SPEED" the starting clutch is disengaged this action deenergizes 20DA-2 which sets the governer to "IDLE POSITION" and starts 5 minutes "COOLDOWN PERIOD" at the end of this period the solenoid 20DV is energized 13 second to shut off fuel flow and stop diesel engine

manual start : the engine can be run for test by depressing the 43DE pushbutton located near the gauge cabinet in the accessory compartment with the operation selection 43 in "OFF POSITION" and 43DE depressed the engine will go to through a normal start and "WARM UP" sequence without starting clutch engagement or ratchet operation the engine will operate at "IDLE SPEED" until 43DE push button is released. DO NOT EXCEED 2 MINUTES. starting sequence and control speed sensors: an important part of the starting sequence in startup control of the turbine is proper speed sensing it is necessary for the logic sequence in startup and also shutdown of the gas turbine. 14HR : 14HM: 14HA: 14HS: ZERO SPEED SENSOR MINIMUM SPEED SENSOR ACCELERATION RELAY SPEED SENSOR HIGH SPEED RELAY

the zero speed sensor 14HR provides.

the signal when the turbine shaft starts rotating if the speed is below 14HR permissive logic initiates clutch engagement and the cranking sequence for the turbine. the minimum speed sensor 14HM. indicates that the turbine has reached the minimum firing speed , the dropout of 14HM minimum speed sensor provides several permissive functions in the restarting of the gas turbine. the acceleration sensor 14HM. indicates that the turbine has reached the minimum FIRING SPEED. the drop out of 14HM minimum speed sensor provides several permissive functions in the restarting of the gas turbine after shutdown. the acceleration speed relay 14HS. pickup indicates that the turbine is at operating speed and that the acceleration sequence complete. with this signal the IGV & COMPRESSOR BLEED VALVES are actuated. The 14HS drop out speed dependent upon turbine shutdown and generator breaker signal. During a normal shutdown the digital set point will decrease, the generator breaker will open on reverse power closing the INLET GUIDE VANES & OPENING THE COMPRESSOR VALVES, the turbine will decelerate ,at 75% speed the 14HS will drop out, driving the VCE to ZERO. approximately 1.5 seconds after 14HS drop out the generator breaker will be trip open and the digital set point will be set to 100.3%. STARTUP CONTROL. Startup control operates as an open loop control in the use of preset levels of fuel commands signal VCE, the levels are "FIRE" , "WARMUP" , "ACCELERATION LIMIT"

While the turbine is at rest, electronic "CHECKS" are made of the *stop/speed ratio valve * gas control valve * accessories * voltage supplies CHECKS light indicates those systems are operated in a proper state. Turning the master operation selector switch 43 from "OFF" to an operating mode will activate the "READY" circuit if all protective circuits and trip latches are permissive the "READY LAMP" light is energized and indicates the turbine will accept the "START" signal. By turning the "MASTER CONTROL" switch "1" to "START" start signal will energizes the master control and protection circuits "4 CIRCUITS " and start the necessary auxiliary equipment. The "4 CIRCUITS " permits pressurization of trip oil system and engaging of starting clutch. The turbine speed relay "14HM" indicates that the turbine is turning at the speed required for proper "IGNITION" in the combustors. The 14HM signal also deenergizes starting clutch solenoid 20CS-1 the clutch then requires from the starting device to maintain engagement. The starting device "Diesel" will hold the firing speed until the purge time 2TV, which was started with the 14HM signal . A purge time is set to force four changes of exhaust duct air, to insure no combustible mixture is in the exhaust . Completion of purge time cycle enables fuel flow sets "FIRING LEVEL VCE" and initiates the firing timer 2F. When the flame detector output signals indicates flame is established in the combustors, the warm up timer 2W starts the "WARM-UP VCE" level, the warm-up timer is provided to minimize the thermal stresses during start up. At the completion of the warm up period start up control increases the "VCE" exponentially to the "VCE ACCELERATION LIMIT"

As VCE increases the fuel increases the turbine begins the "ACCELERATION PHASE" of start up . The clutch is held in as long as the starting device provides torque to the gas turbine , when the turbine overruns the starting device the clutch will be thrown out. Speed relay 14HM indicates that the turbine is accelerating. The acceleration phase of start up ends when complete sequence is reached. STARTING PROCEDURE 1 - Turn the master operation selector switch 43 to AUTO. 2 - Turn master control switch to start. 3 - Start light will come on. 4 - Speed set point set to 100.2%. 5 - Unit auxiliaries will be started. 6 - Ready to start and check lights will go out. 7 - Sequence in progress light will come on. 8 - The unit will ratchet continuously . 9 - Starting device will start. 10- 14HR speed relay indicates light will come on when the shaft breaks away . 11- When the unit reaches 20% speed the 14HM speed relay indicating light will come on 12- Battery voltage will be applied to the generator field and generator voltage will begin to built up. 13- Start up control indicating light will come on. 14- VCE will be set to "FIRING VALUE".

15- Ignition sequence is initiated. 16- When flame is established, the flame detector indicating light will come on. 17- VCE is back set to "warm-up" value if the flame goes out the 60 second firing period, VCE will be rest to firing value. "at the end of the ignition period if flame has not been established, the unit will remain at firing speed, at this the operator may shut unit down or attempt to fire again, to fire again the master operation selector "43" must be moved from AUTO to CRANCK after observing the necessary purge time, the "43" switch may be placed in AUTO again which will initiate another firing attempt. If the unit being operated "REMOTELY" 43 in remote and no fire has been established at the end of ignition period, the unit will be purged of unburned fuel, at the end of purge period normally 1 to 2 minutes ignition will be attempt again, if the flame is not established at this time the starting sequence will be terminated and the unit will shut down. 18- At the end of warm up period with flame established, VCE will begin increasing. 19- when the unit goes on TEMPERATURE CONTROL the START UP LIGHT will go out and TEMPERATURE CONTROL light will come on. 20- when the turbine reaches 40% speed the ACCELERATION SPEED light will come on. 21- The turbine will continue to accelerate and when it reaches about 60% speed the starting device will disengaged and shut down, the diesel engine will cool down at IDEL SPEED before shutting down. 22- As the turbine accelerates, the acceleration control light may come on. 23- when the turbine reaches 95% the operating speed relay 14HS indicating light come on.

24- The lube oil pump will shut down the COMPLETE SEQUENCE light come on, field flashing is removed. 25- Automatic synchronizing is initiated the turbine speed is matched to the system(to less than 1/3 HZ difference ) and when the proper phase relationship is achieved the generator breaker will close. 26- The machine will load to SPINNING RESERVE unless a load control point has been selected with the capacity selector switch "43BP". NOTE THE SYNCHRONIZING CANNOT TAKE PLACE UNLESS THE OPERATIONAL SELECTROR SWITCH HAS BEEN PLACED ON AUTO OR REMOTE AND THE TURBINE HAS REACHES FULL SPEED. MANUAL CONTROL OF LOAD WILL OVERRIDE AUTOMATIC CONTROL. IF BEAK LOADING HAS BEEN SELECTED WITH THE LOAD SELECTION SWITCH "43BP" ON THE TURBINE CONTROL PANEL, AND AFTERWORDS A MANUAL CONTROL FOR BASE LOADING IS GIVEN THE TEMPERATURE LIMIT WILL BE SET TO PEAK BUT THE TURBINE WILL LOAD TO BASE.
