Air India Puts Its Dream On Sale, Invites Bids For All Seven Grounded 787s
Hi All,
Here is a fwd mail. When one realises how many billions of dollars this order for 27 planes cost the nation, one can imagine the scale of the kick back the ministers and the " Hands in Gloves" babus must have recd for ordering an untested aircraft. And, within a couple of months of receiving the first batch of seven planes , now they want to sell these same planes!. Have we already become a banana republic that there is no accountability and corrupt it is accepted silently?. You have to know who is the villian of the show. It is Praful Patil, who was the Civ Aviation Minister when this puchase order was given. Any bets whether he will be asked an explanation? Regards. Sen
Air India puts its dream on sale, invites bids for all seven grounded 787s The Dreamliners, which Air-India had hoped will drive the ailing airlines turnaround, have fallen out of favour after a series of technical snags Bipin Kumar Singh [email protected]
Just under two weeks after Air-India grounded its entire fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners, the airline has put all its seven 787s up for sale. In a bid document issued on January 23, Air-India has offered to sell the six Dreamliners it took delivery of last year and one more scheduled to join the fleet early this year. The airline will lease the aircraft back from the buyersforaminimumof12yearsimmediately after the sale. The Dreamliners, which Air-India had hoped will drive the ailing airlines turnaround, have fallen out of favour after a series of technical snags. Following a directive from the US Federal Aviation Authority after a fire risk reportedly caused by
a battery problem, all 50 Dreamliners owned by operators across the world have been grounded. Aviation experts on Monday said Air-India is paying the price for the undue haste it showedinbuyinganuntestedaircraft.Air-India has placed orders to buy 27 Dreamliners, though it looks unlikely now that it will accept delivery of the rest of the aircraft. Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh and Air India CMD Rohit Nandan remained unavailable for comment on Monday evening. Senior airline officials, who did not wish to be identified, however accepted that to sell an aircraft just months after buying it only to lease it back immediately after the sale does not come across as a smart move. Top aviation expert and former Air-India pilot Captain Mohan Ranganathan said the airline has chosen the wrong time to put its 787s on the block. At a time when Dreamliners have been grounded globally, it is unlikely the airline will find any buyers, he said. The airline has not received any bids since the tender was floated on January 23. Former Air-India managing director Captain D S Mathur the airline should have followed the time-tested formula of first leasing an aircraft and then buying it some years downthelineatadepreciatedvalue.Theairline too a huge risk in placing such a large order for an untested aircraft, he added.
Experts say AI is paying the price for the undue haste it showed in buying an untested aircraft.
