Who Lives Here?

All residents of the complex are researchers interested in botany and preserving local heirloom seeds. Gardening, maintaining the public park, and running the seed library are all jobs occupied by the residents. The cantilever along y elmwood provides dorm-style living for reserach students. Walk-ups and townhouse style units located towards the back provide more permanent living for families and young professionals.

CONCEPTUAL
[+] Central void created to allow for natural ventilation, lighting, and views for the living units. [+] Sharing and extending the exsisting piazza. (Elmwood Arts festival) [+] Establishing a program based on gardens, landscaping, and vegetation. [+] Community based program and spaces (Seed Library and vertical public park)

URBAN ISSUES
[+] Activating the street: storefront is brough to sidewalk [+] Outdoor space in front of Globe Market is extended and brought over to create vertical public park. Space can be used for annual festivals. [+] The intent is to hold a low roof height in contect with exsisting architecture.

SUSTAINABILITY S N I
[+] Reused brownfeild site [+] Green Roof: There are levels of green roof which functions as a park open to the public during the day. [+] Deciduous trees located in central void for shading in summer and south light in the winter.

[THE LIVING WALL]

This project started with a 6 X6 X8 volume which was then shifted and manipulated into a structure to accommodate 3 people with a basic and minimal dwelling space. The unit was programmed to include an entry, circulation, and a room for inhabition. Each project was joined adjacent to one another and shared an adjoining parti-wall.

[UNIFICATION THROUGH REFLECTION]

Using the design speculation for the society of rooms and genealogical research of the mosque typology as a point of departure, the design of the Islamic Center for the city of Bualo was developed. The design includes a prayer hall, multifuctional room, and a parking lot. Ancillary spaces are also provided: shoe room, kitchen, restrooms, and ablution rooms for both men and women.

[COMPOSITE PATTERN PROJECTION]

A 2 dimentional pattern occurring in nature, and a textile pattern were chosen. The elements which make up the textile and nature swatch were analyzed and explored. These elements can be projected into three dimensions to create spatial enclosure. A series of study models were constructed based upon the analysis. They take on the ribbing characteristic of the barnacle and the weaving from the fabric to produce a dynamic and responsive outcome.

20

21

[ [PATTERN WALL] ]
Using the design from the composite pattern projectiong, an envelope wall was constructed to replace the existing double envelope screen wall on the Occidental Chemical Building in Niagara Falls, NY. The design took into consideration air movement, light, and shadow.

[ [EXTENDING THE STRIP] ]

This project is a mixed use oce/market building for the historic Strip District in Pittsburgh, PA. The site is bounded by Penn Ave. to the south, Mulberry Way to the north and 22nd street to the west. This building design is based upon, and a further development of the composite pattern projection and pattern wall.

[ [LIBRARY DESIGN] ]
An open green space located in University at Bualo s north campus became the site for the library proposal. Precedents were analyzed and strategies such as organization, structure, form, and envelope were used.

[URBAN MAPPING]Tokyo, Japan A Summer Abroad

During the 9 week program housed in Tokyo, Japan, high density urban areas were mapped and analyzed. There was a focus on cluster and line formation as well as patterns and time in the subway system.

32

33

The Yamanote Subway line runs in a 1 hour loop around Tokyo. During this time, a single row of 7 seats was studied and recorded. Each time a passenger got up or sat down, it was marked.
